The 18-105mm VR lens is a great lens to have. I still consider this as a perfect kit lens that was coupled to the D90. Images produced are sharp and AF is incredibly fast. When I bought my 18-200mm VR lens, I never even thought of selling my 18-105mm, but, instead used it as a back-up lens. But if you could spare a few more bucks, get the 18-200mm for longer reach.

Re: nikon 18-105mm VR is it worth it?

as phil said, the 18-105vr is a great lens (considering the price point). if you're selling the 18-55vr then good, if not, find something longer to compliment it.

the 18-105vr that come with the d90 kit are relatively cheap (sold as mint or slightly used) but new boxed units are on the expensive side.

i'm actually looking to get one of these to replace my kit lens. it it a good idea to replace my kit lens with this? and how much would a used 18-105VR go? another thing, is it's performance similar or superior to the kit lens? i'm asking about lens performance and sharpness

They're both kit lenses of two different models; they're both great lenses; and, they perform right about the same. The only difference I could see between the two is the range at the long aspect. I have both lenses, the 18-55mm that came with the D60 and the 18-105mm that came with the D90. Guess what?... I didn't sell both of them even though I bought the 18-200mm... because I like both lenses and would rather keep them than sell them. 2nd-hand units?... check eBay.

Re: nikon 18-105mm VR is it worth it?

put it this way… both are still "kit" lenses. one longer than the other. performance should be at par. do you need the extra reach? YMMV.

others opt for the 18-55 + 55-200 or 70-300 vr combo, some prefer a single 18-105vr or 18-200vr to avoid changing lens on the field. again YMMV.

a used 18-105vr can go as low as 10k afaik.

@ bing

thanks for the tips bro. yes actually that's why i'm looking to get an 18-105 so i won't change lenses so much. 10k for a used one? not bad. what are some considerations when looking or getting used lenses?

if we get 18-105 vr already, should we sell the 18-55 vr or just keep it?

I wouldn't if I were you. You can use it as a back-up lens in case something happens to your new one or you can use it as a macro lens using an adapter.
