DPP Official Poll- How Much is All Your Gear Worth?

    Hello Everyone.

We are starting a new section in DPP Magazine that called DPP Readers Poll. The results of this first official magazine poll will be printed in DPP Issue #11. We hope everyone who reads this can participate.

We will allow you also to post a short comment about your gear on this thread. Don't tell us what you have but rather how or why you ended up amassing your collection of gear. We will choose one or two of the best posts and include it in the magazine also.

So the first official poll is

How Much Is All Your Gear Worth?

Thanks to everyone who participated. This will be an on-going and hopefully amusing series for the magazine.

    Hi Nick,

After one had given his/her gears worth? is this something of a concern once out to the open?
    or the names are concealed?

I started small about a year ago, one lens and one body. I took photos of all kinds of things and slowly realized what field I wanted to really be good at and that was sports. I got myself a couple more lenses to support this want. A few more months passed and again, I felt limited with what I had. I went to the U.S. for one semester and there I discovered the magic of online trading and shopping. I sold all my gear except for one lens, got a new body, a tripod, a battery grip and a new lens during my stay there and saved enough to get a new bag here. I'm currently happy with this setup and hope to have a second body with pocketwizards in due time.

This poll is set up so that names are concealed when you take the poll.

This is an interesting poll. I hope that from these - a few can learn:

    1. Malayan Insurance - while I am really interested in getting one, I think the cost of premium still needs to be reviewed. Also, it would be good if they can offer group discounts. I enquired and as it is now, they have no promotions or special offers regarding this. So if the objective is to enceourage hobbyists, amateurs to get one - it looks like it will really take time for it to fly.

    2. The DPP forum members are a niche crowd - brands catering to a niche
market with money to spend should be sponsoring activities left and right to win their hearts ... and pockets. The fact that the minimum "gear cost" reflected in the poll is P100k less - means that this group has buying/influence.

I've been in this hobby for less than a year, but like many hobbies that I've had in the past - I can be so obssessive ... not to mention compulsive. I've learned to temper the latter - but not the former. I have yet to take pills for the former. I have practiced how to just close my eyes and forget the cost. What's important is I'm having fun.

And as the months progress, just like what Fidel mentioned above, you find your own style/niche and interest --- and the "gear acquisition" madness tapers off ... as you realize that you have stuff that you dont need for what you want to do.

    Just my thoughts.

I never thought that I would end like this. I just spent a lot. I don't know where I would stop spending for these gears and I even influenced my wife in photography. It's really worth it and learning photography is not a destination but it is a nonstop journey of one's skills.
