    Unhappy Unable to Upload Pictures

    I was uploading pictures for Lonely Planet Issue 11 Postcards Submission. The first upload was okay. The second failed with this error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 17152 bytes) in /home/digipho/public_html/photography/image-inc.php on line 102

    So far, I have four uploads and the files are all under 500KB. Thus, the total disk space usage is about 2MB.

    This is stated in the upload page:

    Disk space allowed on your account: 2,000,000kb (2,048,000,000 bytes)
    Disk space used on your account: 2,281,974kb (2281974 bytes)
    Disk space remaining for your account: 1,998,255kb (2046213505 bytes)

    The disk space allowed is roughly 1.9GB. 2MB is pretty far from 1.9GB so I don't understand why the upload (uploads--tried it several times) failed. The texts in red font are inconsistent. This may have caused the failure.

    Please, help me.

    (And, by the way, kb is not the same sa KB... kb is kilobits while KB is kilobytes. It should be 2,000,000KB. Please update the upload page.)

    @ninoy_ofiaza

    I mean no disrespect, but I think that the symbol for kilobyte is kB, not KB.

    No offense.

    Re: Unable to Upload Pictures

    I think the best way around this would is for users to post links to the photos for submission from users/uploaders own photo hosting service, instead of having them upload it to the DPP server. Pretty much the way we share photos in the other threads. Less load on the server, less hassle for the uploader.

    None taken. Actually KB is an accepted symbol for kilobyte: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilobyte

    No disrespect but your comment thus not help me with my problem.

    I think this is a good tip. If I still can't upload any picture then I will most definitely do this. Thanks!

    I was commenting on your comment re the use of 'kb'.

    I thought that you meant that 'kb' should be 'KB' only, because you did not include 'kB'.

    As per Wikipedia I stand corrected. My apologies.

    I feel sorry, too, because my comment did not help solve your problem.

    Cheers.

    PS - We did not have Wikipedia when we were still using 'kB'. We never used 'KB'.

    This is due to the server setting of the site not being able to allocate the required memory to process the uploaded file. 67,108,864 bytes is 64 megabytes which is the memory limit of the server. Since there are processes that requires more than 64MB it got exhausted and gave you that error. It probably need to be increased to 128MB or better 512MB.

    You probably need to send your photos to the lonelyplanet email address instead while the issue is not yet fixed.

    @cirloalcantara

    No, not at all.

    Actually the symbol for 'kilo-' (1,000) is 'k as used in electronics terminology.

    Also, 'm' is for 'milli-' (1/1,000) and 'M' is for 'Mega-' (1,000,000).

    The use of 'K' as a symbol for 'kilo' is informal.

    IMHO, Wikipedia is also informal.

    Re: Unable to Upload Pictures

    As per our suggestions posted before, it is better to upload your images to outside hosting sites and post the link here in DPP forums. At the moment, we have thousands of images hosted under our server and sometimes uploading errors happen.

    Hopefully this will be resolved soon when we upgrade our server bandwidth and memory allocation to accommodate the demand. Like what Lloyd mentioned, it helps DPP if you host your images outside since it lessens the server load on every page viewing done.
