Depends on how you position yourself and take the shot. If you are taking pics of the establishments then for sure the guard will approach you as majority of these shops don't like pics taken of their window displays. As always, you'll have to seek permission from the owner of the shop if you wish to take pictures of their products.

While it's true that malls allow public access, we will still have to respect the privacy of the establishments too, as they are still considered private property.

    Re: Taking pictures at Malls

I haven't had any bad experience with my DSLR inside SM Bacoor, SM Dasmarinas, SM Southmall and Robinsons Imus. I am in any one of this places on the weekends with my daughter and take pictures of her. I have also shot several exhibits over at SM Dasma(wedding and cars) with my DSLR and went about it without any problems.

I show the guards my cam when I come in, and even have had it hanging on my body on a few occasions while inside these malls. I guess it really depends on the management, and even how the security personnel enforces their rules and regulations.

As far as general rules are concerned, shooting inside stores is not allowed at almost any major mall in the country... e.g. clothes stores like Marks&Spencer, Forever21, etc... also in the department store. The only areas I'm sure taking pics is allowed even with the biggest dslr's are public consumption areas like mall decor (designs meant to attract customers to hang out and have photos in) and the food court.

Probably they would allow you to use your DSLR when there is an event on a particular section on the mall (e.g.: A mecha exhibit at the Event Center in SM Megamall).

And some malls allows you shoot, some don't because of rules and privacy policies perhaps. I tried taking out my DSLR at Edsa Shangrila and Trinoma, then the guards approached and told me that I need a permit to shoot.
