It's my pleasure to formally announce KLM On Assignment: Europe
Before we get into the details, let me first thank KLM for their support in getting this project off the ground. We really appreciate their confidence in allowing DPP to be part of their 60th Anniversary in the Philippines.
To travel to Holland, the Netherlands
and create a special article for the Lonely Planet Philippines magazine. The winners will have to experience the destination not only as a photographer but also a traveler. They will have to photograph the destination in the quality of an international travel magazine and to take notes about their trip which will then be converted into an exclusive travel piece for the magazine.
The winners' images will also be featured in a special Photo Exhibit that will be part of KLM's 60th Anniversary.
Outside of the Lonely Planet piece, the winners will have their trip featured in a special DPP article also.
a) You MUST have a valid passport for travel during the month of October 2011 which will probably be in the second week.
b) You must be able to be away for at least one week.
c) You must have the proper photography gear for the Assignment. Shooting for a travel magazine means you need to be versatile in your style and also in your gear. We will be checking this with you.
d) You should be in decent physical shape because you will be put to the photographic test every day.
What does KLM get out of this?
Just so that we are all clear here, KLM DOES NOT
own the rights to your image, you do. KLM will not use your images in any commercial way such as advertising. However, participating in this On Assignment means that you will allow KLM to use your images for public relations purposes, ie. their Facebook, photo exhibit, newsletter. That is what we agreed on, so if you aren't comfortable with that, then you shouldn't participate in the On Assignment.
Who can Join?
Anyone, professional or amateur. You must be a member in DPP. There are no minimum post requirements. However, you better be using your Real first and last name otherwise you won't be eligible since this is DPP's master rule.
We will select Six (6) Finalists but only TWO (2) people will go on the trip. The remaining four will serve as alternates just in case the two winners have problems with the travel dates or issues with their visas.
In our past On Assignments we simply asked our membership to give us a Pitch of why they should be on the team and we chose from the most convincing and compelling pitches. We also selected people we thought would form a good team. For this On Assignment with KLM, the process is almost the same but with a little twist.
We will select Six Finalists as I mentioned earlier. The Six Finalists will be given a local photography assignment which they will be tasked to complete in about 7-10 days. From here, we will grade their work and rank them from 1st to 6th. The 1st and 2nd go on the trip while the 3rd to 6th act as alternates. The 3rd spot becomes the first alternate, 4th the second alternate, etc.
To try and become a finalist you must:
- I realize people try to be creative and post videos. Up to you if you want to do this to get recognized, but it is not necessary. The best pitches will be compelling and make us want to choose you. The Pitch is 30% of the selection process.
- You should submit a portfolio of photos that show your range in travel photography. Do your homework about Editorial Travel Photography. That is what we are looking for, images that tell a story and are good for magazines. The smart photographer would probably show street, architecture, food, etc. Portfolio will be 50% of the selection process.
- You will be allowed to post anywhere from 8-12 photos. No more than 12 photos so make sure you select wisely.
-Remember that you are going to shoot for a magazine and you should think what magazines like to use for their images. When was the last time you saw a cartoon HDR image in a travel magazine? Get it?
- Don't show us anything in Black and White. Lonely Planet is not a fine art travel magazine, so your work should be in COLOR.
- We need to see how you interpret things and require that you submit one photo besides your portfolio that will follow a theme. KLM's current campaign now is called "Journeys of Inspiration" We are going to simplify this with the simple theme of INSPIRATION. So come up with one image that shows INSPIRATION and use it for this themed section. The theme is worth 20% of the selection process.
Entering means you PITCH, PORTFOLIO, and PHOTO all in one POST. I am setting up another thread for this, so please kindly follow instructions. You will only be allowed to post your entry once and will not be allowed to make any changes once you do.
You have up to 12:00 noon, AUGUST 31, 2011 to post your entry.
We realize that many of your would like to wait until the last minute to post because you want to analyze your competition. This might not be the best idea because we like to evaluate progressively. In all the past OA's that we have had, its usually been the people who post earlier rather than later who get on the team. That's just a tip.
KLM has just confirmed that the Six Finalists will receive iPad2
as a gift!
We are working also with other photography suppliers who may shortly give their approval for sponsorship of accessories or small gear for the finalists also. I will let you know if, when, and who confirm.
-The Assignment is to go to Holland, the Netherlands to photograph and contribute to a Lonely Planet piece.
-You can join by pitching, showing your portfolio, and submitting the themed photo.
-From this we choose six finalists
-The six finalists will have a shootout of sorts to determine ranking
-The 1st and 2nd go on the trip, the 3rd to 6th are alternates.
-You go on the trip mid October
-You come back and have an exhibit of your work end November for KLM' 60th
-You get your photos and article in the Lonely Planet
-You also get your assignment featured in DPP.
This is a very special opportunity for everyone so I hope you do take this seriously. We hope for a strong cooperation from this community.
Please post questions on this thread if you aren't clear with the On Assignment.
Good luck to everyone!
