hi.... i've notice the pictures from marty sordilla gallery about how bad sigma 50-150 capture picture at 2.8f. I happen to use one and all i can say is at 150mm the auto focus sucks... so to get better picture you should overide it with manual focus. I think its "back focusing" or something like that. otherwise the pictutes come out very sharp with excellent contrast

It should work fine with the d40/x. Any of Sigma's HSM equipped lenses will AF on that body.
