Well the family had been on the business for quite some time now and I want to have my own photo studio, may be a few pointers on how to get it started as my dad told me that he got the equipment and just need the place and the name for it and right now I dont have the capital to invest on it. Maybe you guys could give me some tips and advice on the best way to make this work.

I suggest that you start with whatever you've got and work your way up. Do try to find a good location. A name that suggests what you do would be helpful, so people do not have to guess - if it starts with an "A" it would help when you are being listed in a directory, or something similar. Get a name with just two or three syllabes. If you have a long name, maybe you can use an acronym to make it short, catchy and memorable.

Hope this helps,
Harvey

:) Perhaps the best thing for you to do first is to consult your father first since as you say, your family has been on the business for quite some time now... I'm sure your father has alot more advice to say than just merely from the equipment acquisition standpoint.

Of course you'd need a camera, some lights, a tripod, a computer workstation, good lenses, memory cards, backdrops... etc... These are just some of the basics but there's so many actually which also depends on your mileage and your services rendered. :)

Hi Ross,
It has certainly helped when listings are arranged alphabetically. Maybe "Aadvark" would be the best. I told another photographer about this and he called his company "Ad Aid" so he came ahead of us in the list, until he retired. It's not enough to have a catchy name but it helps.
Regards,
Harvey

P.S. Actually, if his dad's studio is well known and has a good reputation, he might want to use that name.

For a starter, what kind of light should I get? What's the best or common backdrop that can be use on any type of setting?

imho, it is best that you get what you can afford. there are branded lights and there are china lights (i.e. made in china). those chinese lights are cheaper, but im pretty sure they wont last as long. a couple of flash slaves (falcon eyes 100w) would be great to get that equally lit background, then a couple more strobes would be optimal aswell, i have two aurora fusions and soft boxes for that. thats enough for a starter kit, though it would also be nice to have another light as hair light if youre into portraits and stuff. :)
aperture also sells background system that you drill to the wall, plus a few backgrounds and youre all set :)

marketing wise, you should decide what market type to cater on?

kung pang-masa, you'll be competing head-on against mall-studio which are chargeing low rates because of their printing facilities. here i need some advice from studio owners competing against mall-studios.

kung pang-class A customers top of the line equipment ang kailangan mo para pa-impress.

kung in-between class a customers and masa, marami ba 'to to justify your equipment set-up.

your equipment quality will really depend on the type of your target market specially the printing equipment on how much it will cost per picture.

know your competitors.
