View Full Version : Travel Photo Storage Devices
Anton Sheker 09-04-2006, 01:10 PM What do you guys use for Photo Storage while travelling?
whats realiable and what works for you?
Ive tried a few but still think having extra memory cards and
laptop around for downloads is still what works.. hehehe

I agree with you on this. My concern is that it's a bit risky having to put all your photos in a data storage device... and the device bogs down. More images lost. :D
I was just lucky that when I went to the US last summer, my sister had a PC where I could download the images to a CD. I got to save on an extra memory card.

Ditto Anton. I have alot of friends abroad too who swayed from using "middle-man storage/viewing devices"... Some of them even, who are a bit extreme... wireless-tether their cameras to their laptops which are in their backpacks... :)

Wow, high tech. Ang galing naman. Imagine what today's technology can do for us now. :)
Just curious, is this an OK practice? I'm under the notion that the laptop might malfunction since it's riding in the backpack.

Laptops are designed naman to take an acceptable amount of shock perce. However, there are extreme ones that can be thrown, tossed, hammered etc... and can really take a beating... The normal ones can be snugged and secured inside your compu-BPs and be kept running well for a considerable amount of time... Your only enemy here is overheating.

Cool. Thanks, Earl.:)
jerome pagunsan 09-04-2006, 02:33 PM Laptop is still the most reliable storage device and its a computer. I have a photoBank which i can snap-in hardrives as big as 120GB. It can accept CF Cards which is positioned on the top of the device and other cards MMC,SD,Memory Stick on the sides. There are only two buttons on the left side, one for "Power" and "Copy". I use this device in my coverage. Mind though they are not shock proof. I carry this device on my Belt using LowePro camera case. Backup is always a good practice. (I have exactly the same model as shown in the picture)

levi lacandula 09-04-2006, 03:17 PM for the longest time i carry my laptop whenever i travel.
after recurring back problems i recently got hold of the epson p2000.
still have to try it out in the field.. but as of now im pretty satisfied (given that it has somewhat saved my back! hehehe)
Lyndon_L_Ong 09-04-2006, 05:17 PM Creative's ZEN Vision is also a great alterntive. Cost less than an Epson P2000. It has an 80GB HDD and can accept CF card.
Or like the photobank, You can check out Digimate II or III, it can carry a laptop harddrive. It has both CF or SD card slots and USBII compatible....
Robert Cheng 09-05-2006, 06:46 AM how about the compactdrive pd70x? i like it bec it uses AA batteries. you choose your hd capacity 80gb etc. relatively cheap compared to other options but no preview screen only cf card transfer verfication. they have other models at http://www.compactdrive.com. i think aperture carries it locally.
Rosscapili 09-05-2006, 07:42 AM I find the EPSON P2000 user friendly, mura na rin ngayon at 19,000 yata. Maganda pang i present sa client during the shoot. Saves me the burden of carrying my Mac 17 inch all around during location shoot:)
tina mallari 09-05-2006, 08:17 AM I bring my Epson P2000 with me whenever we have to stay overnight somewhere.
It has never failed me ever since I got it but, like Anton, I still buy extra memory cards just to be on the safe side :)
levi lacandula 09-05-2006, 10:57 PM i tried uploading a file from a D2x (Large JPEG) to my P2000 last weekend - it seems to be pretty slow, especially when you try to zoom in for details.
but i dont have issues on how the P2000 handles D70s files. :)
arieldennis_azadachua 09-08-2006, 06:56 PM I got Epson P-2000 (Picture viewer and storage). It can store up to 40GB of data, photos both RAW and JPEG and MPEG4 too. T'is so handy and the large high definition LCD 3.8" is a big plus. However, I'm having some problem with the hard drive. It is making some quirky sound and I got reset message from time to time. Is it normal or I have to send it back to my supplier?

Best to return if for warranty.
arieldennis_azadachua 09-08-2006, 08:15 PM I'm actually considering it bro.
alvin_salalila 09-12-2006, 01:51 PM The CompactDrive PD70x is very good and reliable. I've taken mine in very humid countries, dust storms in India and also for weddings without a glitch. I've tested it on standard alkaline AA batteries and it still manages to download 20Gb worth of photos, on NiMh it'll do about 50-60Gb per charge. The other one I use is Nexto OTG, much lighter than the PD70x but just as fast, although it only accepts proprietary LiIon batteries. Both can download 1Gb in about 2mins.
Downside to both is you can't view the images, they are purely storage devices. But both can also be used as external USB drives.
my 2cents.
horace_posadas 09-20-2006, 05:19 AM I currently use a Nikon Coolwalker. 30GB of storage, a small 1.8" LCD for viewing. Not too bad, but the battery life sucks. I've had it for about 2 years now, so the battery may be due for a change.
One thing I've noticed is that when uploading pictures from the bigger CF cards, it really eats up the battery and it also slows down to a crawl. Don't even try using a microdrive card.
I took it to Death Valley with me, and it didn't have any problems in the heat and sand. I also used it to shoot off-road R/C car races 2 weekends ago, and with all the dust kicked up by the cars, it still performed like a champ. Battery issues aside, it has proven to be a workhorse for me.
I still want to get the newer Epson P-4000 which has 80GB of HDD space though. For the better screen and bigger drive space. BTW, I still carry my laptop with me as well, but I tend to leave it in the car or in my hotel room.

@Levi
I have the same problem with my p4000. Its very slow to review files generated by a 10mp camera. I think epson is coming out with a 250x faster version.
nino_carandang 09-20-2006, 09:12 AM I have a P2000. Lester bought it for me. So far, it has become a part of my utility belt. I never leave home without it.
alvin_salalila 09-20-2006, 10:18 AM Epson P-4500 has been out since March this year. It supposed to have a new imporved image processing support 30 megapixel images.

@ john
i havent upgraded the firmware of my p2000... not sure though if that would address the speed issue of handling bigger files. cant imagine it handling the RAW/TIFF file of a D2x:(
i think the 250x faster version is the p5000 (not sure though)
but as ive mentioned, im pretty much happy how the p2000 handles my D70s files. used it extensively last weekend. first time i didnt bring a laptop. :)

@ nino
how do you find the speed of your p2000 with your mark II files?
nino_carandang 09-20-2006, 11:30 AM no problem so far. RAW or jpeg. did you upgrade to the latest firmware? 2.51?
jose_deluna 09-20-2006, 11:43 AM The Creative Zen is awesome... it can handle transfers from your CF card, it's an MP3 player, a voice recorder, FM radio, and a movie player as well (wmv, mp4, mov, avi) with excellent screen resolution (true-brite).

What I didn't like is the CF card contact pins, mine broke-off easily, it seems that the card slot positions the CF-card in an akward way that may have caused mine to break. I used to have the FlashTraxx before which has a more secured CF-card slot. Now I have to settle for a self-assembled portable device with built-in card reader/copier.
levi lacandula 09-20-2006, 11:44 AM no problem so far. RAW or jpeg. did you upgrade to the latest firmware? 2.51?
i havent.. my unit still has the 2.4 (something). better upgrade it this weekend.
thanks man.
OT: how's the mamiya you recently got:)
nino_carandang 09-20-2006, 11:46 AM OT: fabulous. just looking for the right filters for it.
I got my P2000 with 2.04 loaded on it. I didn't notice any big difference from the upgrade.
levi lacandula 09-20-2006, 11:56 AM does the upgrade address the "file re-naming" issue of the p2000 when you create albums?
i sort of found a workaround to that issue... whenever you transfer data from your memory card to your P2000, dont create albums... just let it store it to its default bucket (save data folder?). it doesnt mess up your file names.. and create "pseudo folders" whenever you insert new memory cards:) . well, this is just based from my experience. other owners might have a better way of doing it :)
OT: was trying to contact you last week... but your mailbox was full! hehe. interested sana in getting a unit (not sure though if its still available with dirt cheap price tag:) ) hehehe
alvin_salalila 09-20-2006, 12:59 PM jose,
what speed does the creative copy files. E.g. the PD70x copies 1Gb in approx 2mins. Does it compare to this figure?

alvin,
It's a little less than 2mins., i'm using sandisk ultra-III 1GB cf-cards... i'm not sure how fast it can transfer photos/files from slower cards. What surprises me most is the browsing capability, raw photos do not show any delays at all when displaying on the screen, instantaneous browsing from one raw photo to another.

i dont think it addressed the issue though. still having problems with it. my question howeveri is; how do you change the wallpaper of the damn thing? its just way ugly with that gray sail boat wallpaper.
John P. Reyes 09-25-2006, 11:35 AM @Nino
How long does it take your p2000 to boot up a picture you've selected from the library? My p4000 takes at least 10 seconds to boot up a D2Xs file. Is there an upgrade that makes this faster? Thanks :)
neil.castano 09-25-2006, 11:40 AM nikon coolwalker for me before...it has 30GB...perfect for traveling.

check first your firmware john. and upgrade on your risk.
