Here are some of my attempts at bird photography during a trip abroad. Your posts inspired me to share my attempts :)

tina, romy, reyno and jimmy,

Glad you guys liked it. More photos. Hopefully, as Romy suggested i will be able to take pictures of local birds. Checked out the website that tina posted but they seem to be about past field trips. Would be nice if you guys can post upcoming trips in this forum; particularly if it's within metro manila. Love to learn from the experts.

While we're at it, am thinking of getting the canon 400 5.6L or the 100-400 IS. What do you think? Will use a 1.4x TC.

For pure birding, I'd go 400 5.6L - sharp wide open, focuses very fast, light and can take a 1.4x TC well. If you shoot other subjects, the 100-400 IS is more versatile and can be easily hand held.

I have both and use the 400 prime much more often than the 100-400 (95% - 5% perhaps). But this is because I shoot only birds, and your mileage might vary. In any case, you won't go wrong with either choice.

Hello Robert,
I posted a length test of the 100-400 recently using different setups. I don't own the 400 prime but for all my birding and other wildlife photography I use the 100-400. As Romy said, the prime is an excellent choice for birding. In fact I met one at the Viera Wetlands yesterday who uses the prime and he's very satisified with his captures.Check this link. I hope it helps.

@reyno, thanks for the link. you made the decision more difficult. i was leaning towards the 400 5.6L before i saw your pics.

@romy, thanks for the succinct advice.

will join a field trip first and decide from there.
