Earl Gonzalez 09-02-2006, 08:23 PM Thanks Anton for the tutorial... Currently looking for a new phone to serve as my internet link when I'm out... My 9500 caught a virus via MMS so it wouldn't see the light of day for a very long time... Your post may help me in my decision for my next phone purchase. :)

How many pics (of file sizes) can you upload to your site in 30 mins?

darwinandres 09-22-2006, 11:30 AM Been doing this, since the birth of Smart 3G with my N6630. The upload/download is fast only when you're on 3G network, but with GPRS network it's just like dail-up. Another thing, when you're on the road your connection speed will depend on how fast you are moving. When you're on the expressway even if you're connected to 3G network, but you are moving at 120kph your connection will degrade considerably. One reason is the frequent hand-off when you are moving from one cell site to another and the worse thing about it is when you hand-off from one cell site to another and the new cell site does not support 3G network you will be disconnected or your phone will restart..... your upload will hang.
One more thing about Smart 3G is their pricing. Yes, the publish rate is 10 pesos per 30 min, but when I got my bill I was surprised to see that When i connected on the the first 15 min or so then re connected after being disconnected Smart charged me another 10 pesos. The published rate says that regardless of how many times you connect within 30 min you will be charged 10 pesos, but I was charged 20 pesos.
I think there's still a bug on their system, but over all the service is ok. I don't have a landline at home and use only my 3G for browsing, download and upload, but Peer to Peer service don't work with Smart 3G. They manage to block P-to-P service.
I also often get virus on my phone I don't know why. What I do is back-up my phone once in a while using Nokia PC Suite specially when I inputed new contacts on my phonebook. When I got virus on my phone I simply format my Phone and restore the last back-up file. Here's how to format your phone (Nokia): Turn off your phone. Press and hold *, 3, and green button while turning on your phone. Don't release until your phone have started. Warning: all the data on your phone will be erased. Restore your phone data using Nokia PC Suite...... For Sony Ericsson... I don't know how.... Hirap gamitin ng Sony Ericsson eh.
=)

It' like having a DSL connected at 128kbps
Earl Gonzalez 09-22-2006, 11:42 AM Update: Now I use an HP IPAQ with my HP laptop... Bluetooth connectivity and wireless internet access... Yey! :) But I won't recommend using it that much coz the rates can go as if you're in dial-up but the speed is indeed DSL like...

i have tried using the smart 3G connection months ago for uploading pixs or even checking e-mail while am on remote with my laptop then i stop for some reason...connection is slow but thats the best we can get...better than no connection. how i wish smart bro can produce a device like pc/express card for us......hehehe!
Romy Ocon 10-15-2006, 08:19 PM Just set up a Nokia 6630 with a dedicated Smart Buddy SIM card (prepaid) on my notebook, and when 3G coverage is on, I'm getting around 128 kbps.
Not bad for PHP 20 per hour for the privilege to surf and upload pics even when I'm in out-of-town birding sorties...:)

raymund_madronero 10-15-2006, 09:03 PM 128 kbps for 3G connection is way too slow compared to the promised 1.4Mbps... I tried EDGE-GPRS connection before (Nokia 9500 on Globe Network via DKU-2 connection to the PC) I get around 400kbps. But, when my bill arrived, muntik na akong himatayin. That time they were charging on a per kilobyte basis.
Romy Ocon 10-15-2006, 11:11 PM I'm surfing now via my Smart Buddy 3G and the best bandwidth speed I've gotten today is circa 168 kbps (via Speedtest.ph bandwidth meter). We have no DSL/broadband access at UPS-2 Paranaque (except the wireless flavors), so I've been surviving on dial-up for several years.
Way back in 1998 or so, my dial-up plan charged me at PHP 20/hour at less than 20 kbps IIRC. So I tend to see the glass as half-full and find the prepaid Smart 3G very apt for my needs. I also like the built-in safety valve of the e-load limit... pag nasarapan akong mag-surf, my connection is cut off once my load is depleted. No fixed monthly payments, just pay per use, and the modem is useable on my notebook and desktop....:)
