View Full Version : new D80- lens prices & where to buy?
Eric_Ramirez 09-01-2006, 02:35 PM I was able to get a D80 body from Singapore yesterday (1550 sgd w sg warranty) through my friend. I'm supposed to get it this sunday. He took some pictures at iso 1600 which looked quite good.
I only have 2 ais lenses (24 2.8 and 50 1.2). I am borrowing a 50 1.8afd temporarily. My wife only approved one lens. I am leaning against superzoom like 18-200vr. Would appreciate idea on pricing and where to get? Used is ok. I am interested in the following:
1. 17-55 2.8 but mahal and heavy and a few bad samples daw
2. 17-70 sigma 2.8-4.5 - some bad samples of this, but very nice pix from the good ones
3. 85 1.4 mahal also but kinda interesting if i can get it used at a good price. so i'll probably use with the 24 ais (manual focus should be ok bec wide angle right?)
4. 85 1.8 more practical but some day maybe i will get 85 1.4 so sayang lang
Would appreciate any advice. I am just an amateur. I used to use EOS50 and now using minolta a200.
Thanks!
Vince_Villamin 09-01-2006, 03:00 PM the 18-200 is really a great walkaround lens.
Carlo R. Lopez 09-01-2006, 03:20 PM you have one already? post some pics .why not get the 18-70 and build your arsenal from there. then get the 17-55
Anton Lorenzo 09-01-2006, 03:28 PM If I were limited to one lens, I would go for the 18-200 VR.
Raffy Crucillo 09-01-2006, 03:41 PM I agree with Vince and Anton, get the 18-200 VR (especially if you have the budget for it).
Personally, I use the 18-70 dx.
nap_alcedo 09-01-2006, 04:15 PM I have an 18-70 DX and it served me well for two years. It is a good lens, until I got the 17-55 f2.8 which is better. So, if you are interested, I am selling my 18-70. Just pm me for the details. It is a good lens to start.

likewise! when did you get the 17-55?
nap_alcedo 09-01-2006, 04:29 PM Got it last Tuesday from Wilson of Avenue Photo. I tested it last night when we did a major surgery but I don't know if you guys would appreciate it because of the "shock" value in it. In other words, bloody. :)

Maybe we can start a theme based on that... "Inside Photography".
Eric_Ramirez 09-01-2006, 04:38 PM D80 is still in sg. I am supposed to get it this coming sunday, i think. I'll try to post pix when I get it. I don't think I can post the pix I got from him bec its his kids.
I have a superzoom na w a200 which also has anti shake. So I think I'd like to build a lens set that I don't have to upgrade later on. At least that's my theory now.
How much is a 17-55 or 85 1.4 here? Wala bang second hand?
nap_alcedo 09-01-2006, 04:48 PM Uy, I like that Raffy, "Inside Photography". I just don't know if the moderators would allow it. You see, not all of you will have access to areas where we have access to. Which means, these photos might be exclusive to a few of us here. Anyway, we will see. I will try to start a new thread without the pictures first...:)

Thanks!
wow! thats like php50k... not bad for its features... hmmm :)
Eric_Ramirez 09-01-2006, 09:22 PM There is a comex show in singapore, so its available.
I think I'll end up with a 17-70 sigma if i can get a good copy. If not will save up for 17-55.
No chance to get 17-55 for 50k?

Agree with Anton 18-200VR perfect all rounder, but not a good choice if your on a budget....

nolan_empalmado 09-02-2006, 08:16 AM what's your budget for the one lens your wife approved?
Eric_Ramirez 09-02-2006, 08:43 AM She said i could get a nice lens so probably up to 50k.
Actually am a bit confused what to get.
Everyone seems to be recommending the 18-200vr. My friend said there was one available in sg at 1280 sgd, i think about 820 usd but I said no. Mali ba?
17-55 ideally if i could get it at that price. I could also just live w 85 1.4 for a while and my 24 and get a 50.
17-70 sigma i've seen very good shots from good copies of that lens. I like the range. This is kinda the most practical one. Then I can just get a 180 2.8 afd second hand from usa for about $400-500.
Eric_Ramirez 09-02-2006, 08:45 AM Second lens would still be next year.

you would be hard pressed to find a 17-55 at that price. the 17-55 new costs about 70k more or less. not sure about second hand. 18-200 would really be a good solution since brings you close to the max of your budget.
Eric_Ramirez 09-02-2006, 10:16 AM Could you pls tell me how much an 85 1.4 afd is here? Thanks
Eric_Ramirez 09-08-2006, 11:38 AM I ended up getting the 18-200vr as many have suggested. I should have it by Sunday. I tried a second hand 17-35 2.8 afs for sale for about 40+k. It was in very good condition, but probably needed service as it was much less sharp than the 50 1.8 on the newspaper test. So no deal.
I've been using the D80 for about a week, mainly w the 50 1.8 I borrowed but also w my ais lenses. LCD screen w zoom feature is big, bright, high res and very nice. Faster than my old EOS 50 focus and 3fps. Viewfinder is much bigger than D70 and good enough to focus manually - though still this isn't that easy. Build quality is good, size, weight etc is just right. IQ is nice, good enough for me at 1600 iso. I borrowed a D200 before, of course that is more cool. But its kinda heavy.
So I'm really happy with it! Overall a 9.9/10. I just wish it could meter ais lenses. I using the 50 1.2 ais, but not so easy.
Thanks to all who made suggestions.

depends where you check but the average is about 50k and thats if you can even get it here.
Jerry Sagmaquen 09-09-2006, 11:41 PM how much is D80 body?
Eric_Ramirez 09-10-2006, 09:00 AM Was 1550 sgd in singapore w singapore warranty. 18-200vr was 1280 w singapore warranty. Both cash price including gst. So if you buy as tourist you can get the 5% gst rebate. I wasn't able to get rebate.

70K for the kit? Any ideas how much for body only?
roy_delacruz 09-11-2006, 01:53 PM Did you get the 18-135 kits lens or just the 18-70?
Eric_Ramirez 09-11-2006, 02:06 PM ano po inclusive sa box? may kasama bang vertical grip?
Just the strap, body, battery, charger, cap, manual. (body only), some software, cables.
no vertical grip.
Battery lasts easily about 700+ shots many w flash, lots of lcd use. I still had about 30% left but just recharged it.
Vince_Villamin 09-11-2006, 02:20 PM hopefully the d80 body will cost around 50K as the US price (999) suggests. If not, I'm sure it will reach that point after a couple of months but perhaps not this year, demand is high just before christmas i would guess.
jake_borres 09-11-2006, 03:28 PM Wilson at avenue is selling the d80 kit for 65K...arriving this week yata
roger_villon 09-11-2006, 05:58 PM Did you get the 18-135 kits lens or just the 18-70?
