I admire Mr. Parc Cruz' work very much, especially the ones having the gothic effect. I wonder if Mr. Cruz can teach newbies like me on how to create such an amazing effect - in detail - hehehe! Thank you Sir Parc in advance. *salute* :)

:) Well, try to PM Park... Maybe he'd be willing to share his stuff...

There are also other ends to admiring someone else's works - make it our inspiration to experiment on filters and tools; and of course, to develop our own photographic style.

Personally, I think Parc Cruz's "gothic" style is his own, so I don't want to ask him for a tutorial on how he does the tricks with his photographs. But I bet he can share a little step-by-step on which filters and tools to use.

Agreed Dys. :) Artists... Photographers... Really should have their own style...

sherwin,

my idea of a gothic is a bit red skin, so why don't you give this a try.

1. mask the skin, and apply feather to soften the mask
2. desaturate it
3. increase red. selective color or color balance would do.

hope this helps, kudos!

I find Parc Cruz interesting. I believe he has mentioned here before that he is still trying to find his style but when he posts photos here there is a style definitely. I don't know if Goth would be the right word to describe it though. Parc did have one thread here where he showed some of his photoshop moves for a certain image. Try to check out the archives.

If I recall correctly Parc normally:

1) plays with skin tones using Hue Saturation layer by going to the Red and/or Yellow colors
2) Runs either Unsharp Mask or the High Pass filter pretty aggressively
3) usually puts a vignette by using curves

There might be more but probably not much more. The Photoshop moves are the easiest. The way he composes his image and the emotions he draws from the subject are the difficult part.

i guess, you need to learn first the different photoshop tools and from there, apply it artistically to your image.

i don't think mr. parc will like his images being branded as gothic.. he is still in a stage of experimenting.. maybe what you saw lately were some dark (gothic) renderings to his images which actually are still evolving..

here are some of his latest playful experimentations..:)

I think photoshop is just the tip of the iceberg. I have seen this genius at work and I noticed that the way PARC composes his photos, he already has an end in mind so I guess composition is key. His imagination runs wild thus he never fail to amaze and amuse people. Personally, I would say his photos are far from gothic. But calling it "Parc's Way" has some nice ring to it, don't you think so?

Actually, if you really just want to know how he did it, you may search the internet for some photoshop tips and tricks in rendering those kind of images. :)

And also, you may ask him personally thru PM for those sites. He's not selfish, I'm sure he'll share it. But don't assume that he'll show you his workflow step-by-step. Just learn how use PS (the basics and some advance tools) and use your creativity to develop your own style. :)

I can't speak for Parc though... But for me and most of my colleagues who are "Photoshop etc. Super Freaks..." Most of the time we envision or conceptualize a composition up to the post processing phase and final delivery first; and then gather material...

yup, nice ring. and it is his way, his outlet, his hobby.... as with all artists, it is how he expresses himself. :) and you can ask him, he's very approachable, and he entertains questions whenever he's not busy with his work.

this is so true. i think devoted artists use photoshop this way, as an integral part of the whole photographic/artistic process...not just a software or tool to correct flaws in the original capture. i try to think of a mood or a certain look...i'll always have that in mind...then i go look for material/venues which will fit the concept brewing in my head. post-processing is just the final step, a way to stamp style into a photo i took.

kudo's to parc for having his own personal style. its not just photoshop...its the entire process...

 okay, sorry for the term "gothic"... and "Parc's Way"'s good!

I know its Mr. Parc's style and I know - we should also have our own - but I think there's no harm in asking for some tips from sir Parc... learn from other people then learn for yourself, right? that is what this forum is for... okay, I give up on the "step by step", sorry for the words, hehe! simple words from Mr. Parc will do. don't have any plans of immitating him, just want to know how.

thank you guys for the replies and tips shared. :)

:) hi sherwin! well im not as good as the others here but i know a lil and would like it to share to you. i only have two steps in creating such gothic or dark art, as others would call.

1. it is true that the very first thing you should have is the idea of what you would want to create. and, the better the composition, the less manipulations you have to do.

2. play and experiment. photoshop have lots of filters, textures, etc. do not be afraid to try them all out. but you dont need to know all those curves, levels, hue, and so on and so on. for now, play on what you know.

in this kind of art, you would never know what is crappy or not. you may think that you have created a nonsense piece, but when others see it, its like WOW!
well if you have time come drop by my multiply account http://bluntsight.multiply.com . i have there my so called dark art. and ill be glad to teach you on how i create them. good day sir!

i agree with you nick...high pass filter w/overlay shouldn't be missed out....and a little dodging n burning w/ overlay might as well help also.
