I was at the SM Science Discovery Center this weekend and they had a small area about the history of photography.

Notice anything missing from this list of oh-so important milestones and companies?

Cause Pentax is the Dark Horse, the Black Sheep no one wants to talk about... they try to ignore it hoping it would go away, but they know it's there... oh yes, they know it's there... lurking, ready to take over the world! Hahaha...:) There's no Zeiss too, cause Zeiss is Pentax's mistress... and Hassleblad the dark minister... oh and Kodak's the half-brother from another mother... proof that the winners(read: moneyed) write history...

I didn't realize Zeiss made cameras as well! Yeah... the evil consortium tries to pretend Pentax doesn't exist, taking every opportunity to shutter them in and relegate them to the darkest corners of history.

That EF-S lens is so prominent I thought this was a Canon ad.

Everything else is so small and washed out. :Scared:

Yeah... look at that giant Rebel. It almost looks sponsored.

If not for the fact that right next to it is a Digiprint chromakey booth, using Nikons exclusively.

bong, maybe you can draft a letter to whoever put this exhibit up and point out the grave mistake of leaving out pentax' contribution in photographic history. i'll sign and whoever else wants to and send it to them.

no, they won't change what's exhibited. but they'll learn that there are those who won't take some things sitting down. (and if i were a better wordsmith than you are, i'd be the one to write the letter myself.)

That's weird considering that Pentax is the oldest of the bunch. (Japanese SLR Makers)

totie.bruno
10-23-2007, 11:49 AM
also considering that K1000 stayed for so many years as well-sought after SLR camera...

Asahi Optics founded AD 1919
Its the first 35mm SLR which is made in Japan and was the first camera company to introduce the instant return mirror
And was the company which perfected TTL way back in the 60's

Pentax was also the pioneer in TTL exposure metering and Pentaprism based viewfinders. :)

Dami rin wala........Contaflex, Alpa, Graflex, Ricoh, Praktina. Lord 5D, Hexanon35, Miranda, Polaroid, Anscomark, Contarex, Contax, Exacta, Voigtlander, Panoramics, etc. hehehe. All, one way or the other, contributed, albeit, a small piece in the development of photography/camera.Mas lalo ang PENTAX!

See? Isn't it weird? It's a list of important milestones yet they miss out on the foundations of SLR photography! I dunno, it's a strangely biased list. I'm not sure if you guys can see the detail in the timeline on the left side, but there are a lot of noticeably absent moments.

Maybe Pentax didn't bother to have a stall inside Photo Congress since the showroom is located just beside the entrance. :)

hey doc vic and randall, and the bunch...

well said, pentax is the pioneer for so many innovations. however, in this modern era of photography the new young guns arent familiar with their achievements. im happy to report that pentax imaging usa has just returned from a successful show in new york city, where 3 of the pentaxians, myself, kerrick james, and julie quarry each exhibited our work.

all i can say is that pentax is on the move, and we have many new tricks up our sleeves. and for those of you who didnt know. ned bunnell has been named the new president of pentax imaging usa. his vision and marketing wizardry are the reasons why pentax has had this recent surge in success. the powers that be back in japan hold ned with high regard and believe in his vision for the "New Pentax"

Pentax:
the oldest optical house out of Japan
Inventor of the first japanese SLR, the asahi-flex
Pioneers in the all glass pentaprism design
inventor of proprietary Pentax SMC multicoating. (shoot with SMC glass, there is a difference)
the number one selling SLR of all time, the k1000

good things come to those who wait, from that little camera company, that really could...

here you go...the pentax milestones:

http://www.pentax.co.jp/english/company/company/history.html

http://www.pentax.co.jp/english/company/company/image/museum_popup.jpg

Opened in 1967, PENTAX Camera Museum boasts a collection of over 7,500 cameras, including the world’s first Daguerreotype camera and other exceptionally rare cameras from around the world. About 1,000 cameras from different eras have been carefully selected from the collection and placed on permanent exhibition. Visitors can stroll through the museum and embrace the rich history of photography.

@doc mark: It's been awhile since you last posted! Nice to see you're back! Yeah, post some pics from your exhibit! Ned Bunnell... why is that name familiar to me? Anyway, I wasn't able to answer your question last time, Jade Torralba isn't familiar to me, maybe a 2nd cousin? Since most Torralbas here are related anyway:)

I got a chance to drop by WPP last night as well. Apart from papers and the Sony Alpha 700, there wasn't much of interest. (Though I did get tempted to get the Lowepro Computrekker AW on the spot...)

Quite disappointing, as well, was the fact that none of the seminars, workshops or talks were accessible by anyone NOT a delegate. The workshops were practically the only reason I dropped by (barring the fact I was at Pentax to pick up some CLA'd lenses.), so all in all... I'm glad it was a no-admission-fee affair.

It's at the SM Discovery Center. That's at Mall of Asia.

You can probably send it to the head office of SCMC, that's right in front of MOA.
