View Full Version : Epson P-3000 and P-5000

hey randy, when is this coming in? :) 250x faster? wow!

from Engadget:
Epson's about to let loose a couple of bumps to its line of portable photo viewers / media players, tossing the P-2000 and P-4000 to the curb in favor of the numerically-enhanced P-3000 and P-5000. Both models retain the same 40GB and 80GB hard drives of their predecessors as well as SD and CompactFlash slots (other formats'll need an adapter-- so sorry, dear xD), with each getting a slight boost in screen size to a full four inches (up from 3.8 inches). The biggest benefit, however, seems to be an increase in operating speed -- a mighty 250% faster, according to Epson. The units also continue to blur the line between photo viewers and portable media players, boasting a hefty line-up of video support (including DivX) as well as MP3 and AAC audio support. Look for these to hit stores before the end of the year for $499 and $699, respectively.

Great news! I was a bit disappointed with my P4000 as far as review of pictures was concerned. It was a great travelling HD. But, when some of my friends asked to see the pictures, all I saw for the most part was that stupid hourglass.

It says the new ones are 250X faster than the P2000, how slow is the P2000? I've been contemplating on getting a P2000, but the 250X faster P3000 just makes me think otherwise.

Do you have an test units? PM me nalang regarding this.

This could be in the market this coming Christmas holiday season. It's slated to be released on November 20.

Just going back to the original article, I think I misinterpreted the 250% to be 250x. So its basically 2.5x faster. I think I'll wait out for the P3000 or hopefull the P5000 if budget permits.

Since Wednesday, I've texted Epson, called their office
(813-6567), called the cell phone (0917-8526003 Edgar Barcellano) more than 100x. No answer. No answer until the line goes dead. No answer until the line goes dead.

(they connect me... the phone stops ringing, goes back to the operator.. reconnects... stops ringing... goes back to the operator... been on the phone for 30 minutes and this is already the 5th attempt today... am I quitting, no way!)

Am I upset?

Am I frustrated?

I really hope I'm just calling the wrong numbers or I'll really think their customer service isn't good.

I also have a P-2000 and have been very happy with it's performance but ever since I saw the P-5000, I have been battling with myself if I should get a higher capacity one. After reading about how their customer service head takes care of one their customers - why in heaven's name would I even support a company who does not seem to have a very good customer service department <--- this is MY opinion with all the products that we buy so I hope nobody out there crucifies me for stating an opinion that I truly believe in :):Dum:

ok guys,

I think this is already getting out of hand. Anyway, although this is a CS issue, I have managed to meddle myself into this. I just spoken to Mr. Arada, yes, it will be replaced.

Because the stocks are limited because it was just recently launched, we have waited for the additional shipment to come in. Finally, the stocks have came in. We are expecting the unit of dindin to be ready if not today, tomorrow.

Sorry for the delay dindin.

We are currently reorganizing our company, so groupings are still not final. The mobile phone that received the text message was a company phone which is being left in the office after work hours, I believe the text message was received at 8am. work hours is from 9am to 6pm.

anyway, I can be your window person for epson if you need any issues resolved. Just drop me a message here.

@Tina

I totally agree with you when it comes to aftersales service. I actually don't mind paying more for things if it entails better service (i.e. clothes store, supermarket, bookstore, restaurants, spa, etc.).

I've really been patient with Epson and I still am (even after losing over 2000 RAW images in that hard disk crash). Oh, and believe me when I say that these multimedia viewers are really great gadgets to have. I really like them. (That's why I'm not giving up on this journey.)

@Heidi

Thanks for mediating my cause. All I really want to know was when I'll get it. If Mr. Arada just informed me when, then I won't be wondering every single day. If he tells me I'll get it in three weeks, I won't be calling every single day until the 21st day comes. (Because I myself don't like being nagged.)

My frustration, besides losing my photos, is that there was no response. Based from my conversation with Mr. Arada last Friday, he assured me that he'll handle my case personally and it was a relief... a new hope again.

Just for clarification, the text messages were sent during office hours. So were the phone calls made. Again, all I needed was a single reply.

Thank you very much for facilitating. I really appreciate it.

Best regards,
Dindin

@Dindin: I admire your patience, and I totally agree with you that paying more won't really matter as long as you're served properly and on time. I hope you'll get your P3000 soon.

PS... just of the thought of lossing 2000+ RAW images is already like lossing my gord!!!

@dindin,

i'm really surprised you haven't gotten back a replacement for your p2000. anak ng tipaklong (translated: son of a grasshopper)! and i thought you lost 200 raw files (which is unthinkable already), 2,000 pala. really makes me think twice about buying an epson image viewer (and i nearly bought one last december). i agree with you about better customer service. naiintindihan naman natin na servicing takes time. but being given a reply/response shouldn't take ages. ano ba naman yung 5 minute call or a text message to assure us customers that our plight is being taken cared of.

on second thought, the very least you deserve is a p5000. 2,000 raw images lost? can you ever put a price on images lost forever?

P-3000 Update:

Battery life: superb! Approximately 3x longer than my previous P2000.

Viewing Rate: Way better, too! No more long waits to load the next photo.

Portal: Friendlier... you can even put a wallpaper. It's similar to the PSP's.

Directory/Files: May now be sorted. You can now organize it the way you organize your computer files (yes, but still within categories: video, music, photos). With the P2000, you can only upload your photos (edited ones) into one directory, then copy these files into another album, which you need to name manually. And the filenames get changed to new names. Yes, tedious!

Transfer rate from Memory Card to P-3000: Since I didn't have a full card, I can't quite comment on this. But with 50 RAW files, it only took 3-4 minutes more or less.

The only observation which I found queer or maybe I'm just doing something wrong is the mounting time. With my P2000, it mounts into my mac within seconds as soon as I plug it to my USB port. But with my P3000, it takes 2-3 minutes. But, the CF and SD cards attached to my P3000 mounts just as soon as I plug it to my computer. (All-in-all, with the P3000, maximum of three volumes mounts in your computer: CF, SD and the P3000 unit. While with the P2000, only the P2000 mounts, no CF or SD even if their in the system. So, it's sort of a daisy chain type which is really cool.)

Appearance: It's gwapo! Buttons are softer. I like the 4-way scroll, dedicated zoom and unzoom buttons and the menu buttons are great. I haven't used the rating button but I'll try that later.

I really, really like this P3000.

Thanks again, everybody!!!

Oh, and for those who are wondering where they can get spare batteries, Mr. Excel informed me that you can order it from any Epson Service Center. It's on a per-order basis. Price? No advise yet.

Another option is to order it from B&H.

But if you're not a heavy user, I think for as long as you always lug the charger with you, then you'll be fine with just one battery. As for me, I'll know after next weekend.

Again, this is a great photography gadget to have.

Just got back from Batanes and brought along my P3000. Very good unit.

Battery life, well full charged the day before I left (Wednesday) and only chaged it once in Batanes around Friday night - only because I kept on viewing my pics on the P3000.

Transfer rate is very impressive, had a full 2-GB CF and it transferred all files (at RAW) in less than 2 minutes.

Viewing quality is also superb on the 4" display.

Easy to use, didn't even read manual.

Overall, a good buy - as of now.

hi guys,

am happy that you are happy :)

with regards to the batteries, i shouldn't say this but since you guys are special, here it goes.

the price of the battery from epson is expensive. am still haggling with the regional office to lower it down a bit. In japan, there are a lot of 3rd party batteries that are twice cheaper than epson. Not sure when it will be coming in the country. So my suggestion is to wait for it.

The P2000 and the P4000 are the older models. The newer ones are the P3000 (40gb) and P5000 (80gb). :-)

Thanks Heidi! I placed my P3000 order Sunday, hopefully I get it in 3 working days (Wednesday?) :D

That HK price is tempting but reading Din's post w/ regards to her P2000 and with Heidi here helping her out, I went ahead and opted for the locally warrantied one. And besides, that 6 mos 0% interest was tempting as well.

hey randy,
Try this number 781-0581, it's the number of Bridge Disty. Bridge handles all the dealers in Metro Manila. You can look for Anne Loreto.

I got my P3000 today! Yebah!

Currently charging it. The outlet plug is for Japan, good thing I have this plug anything type powerstrip so... 2.5 more hours to go before full charge.

Anyone know where to get some Ultra Clear Brando LCD protector for P3000?

Congratulations!!! Enjoy!!! Try Digital Walker for the LCD Protector but honestly, it's not that easy to get the screen scratched.

Yipee! I'll be getting my P-3000 within the week! Can't wait to test it out... Have to wait for my 400D, though, which is still confined in the hospital for a jammed pop-up flash.

Is anyone here gonna try to get a leather case for their P-3000? I saw one in eBay. I wonder if there's any available locally.

I was looking at a leather case when I first bought my Epson P4500. I went with a LowePro Slip Lock Pouch 20 instead. I can attach it any of my camera bags with its velcro strap and I don't have to worry about it getting dirty.

The leather case costs only $25, exclusive of shipping.

Here's a link to the eBay page (http://cgi.ebay.com/Leather-Case-for-Epson-P-3000-P-5000_W0QQitemZ140081000289QQihZ004QQcategoryZ86534 QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem)...

Doesn't the constant pulling and slipping back into the pouch scratch-up the unit?

Honestly, I just use the pouch that came with it. I forgot to quote Arthur's post, the SL 20 is small for the P-3000.

The leather pouch you posted is really nice but the sides are exposed... may get scratched. I use a similar case for my iPod and the exposed areas have light scratches already. But, it's pretty.

How about the Crumpler (http://www.crumplerbags.com/Cart/index.php?catId=11) Thirsty AL for a P-3000 pouch? It also has a sliplock-like back. And, they come in a wide range of cool colors!

I didn't know that the case that comes with the unit was neoprene. I am yet to receive my unit.

The Crumpler Thirsty Al is generally made of neoprene (and it's got a slip velcro lock). It would be a good alternative then?

It is of neoprene material and it has this felt texture on the inside. Although it is not as thick as the common neoprene.

Hooray! I just got my P-3000!

It's a lot bigger and a lot thicker than I imagined it to be. I was thinking that it would be nearly as big as a medium sized point & shoot. I've gotten so used to my 60GB iPod Video, that this thing kinda feels like a brick... But, it's either this, or I bring my MacBook Pro during shoots.

The screen resolution just blows me away! I am quite impressed... It's way better than the Creative Zen Vision W's larger screen.

The supplied pouch isn't really neoprene. It's just foam padding. With a 5.9"x 3.5"x1.3" dimension, even the largest Crumpler Thirsty Al will be too small for the P-3000.

I just noticed that I have a busted pixel on my unit. A single pixel near the top part of the screen is always Red. :(

I use my P-3000 mainly for photos.

I have a 60GB iPod Video that's loaded with every disc collection I have, with several other albums I've swapped with friends. I've even loaded it with tons of video ripped from my DVDs. And, I still have over 25GB left over.

Had transferring photos to the Video Ipod been as fast as using a P-3000, I would've stuck to my iPod. As it turn's out, the iPod will run out of charge before it can fully transfer a 1GB card via an iPod photo adaptor. So, my iPod is now solely for videos and music.

@dindin: Make sure you bring your LowePro belt along when you get your Crumpler The Bundle, just so you can see if it'll indeed fit your belt. If you get the case at the Crumpler Store in Bonifacio High Street, mention my name (then ilag ka :) ) and try to ask for a 10% cash or 5% card discount.

1. Insert CF card to the P3000
2. Cancel by pressing Back when it asks if you want to do a backup
3. Go to the Folder where the file you want to copy is located and select (highlight) the file (no need to magnify, the thumbnails view is enough)
4. Press Menu
5. Select Copy/Move > Copy to CF Memory Card (you can also copy to another folder, to an SD card or to a USB Device)
6. Press OK twice (the second press copies) if you move to another image, you will see that the first image has a check mark. That means, you can copy several images at the same time by repeating from step 3 [Pressing Back several times undos the selection/s]

*You can also copy/move a whole folder.

Basically thats the procedure. Try it out.

Randy

Hi All,

Is the Epson P3000 and P5000 much much better than the P2000? How good are they on the field? Does their usefulness/features really warrant its hefty price?

I'm thinking of getting one, and having a hard time decide which model to get.

How's the battery life of the P5000 compared to the P2000? I hear that the P5000 has a shorter battery life compared to the P2000... How true is this?

Hi Miggy! i got a P3000, never had a P2000 but according to dindin file transfer and battery life is way much better than the older model (P2000) plus the p3000 has a bigger brighter lcd and can display adobe rgb colorspace.

Usefullness in the field? Very usefull! Instant View of your shots, slip on a card and it will ask you if you want to back up or browse the contents. On a kingston 2gb elite pro 50x cf card i've transferred the full card in about less than 5 mins (mixed jpeg large fine and raws shot with a d200). Its a great photo viewer with very little wait time opening large folders.

With its ability to play music and videos already a plus, its really worth its price.

I was just targetting for a p2000 back then but I cant find any, all the shops which sell the epsons only got the p3000 or p5000. so shelled out another 10k.
No regrets. Very happy with it.

@Arthur

A MBP is far heavier than your P4500 :)

I totally agree... Lugging a laptop around especially in remote shoots like the beach, rainforests, mountains, etc. defeats the actual purpose of having an ultra portable device to store and view your images.

Yes, a laptop can definitely do much more than an Epson MMV, no question about that. But there are cases and situations that a laptop especially a 15" or 17" MBP cannot serve as a portable device to which the Epson was primarily created for.

Now as to Jerry's comment I also agree with his argument that with the price of an Epson MMV you are already nearing or if not equaling a price of a bnew laptop.. But, the question is, what if you already have a laptop? It really doesn't make any sense to buy another laptop given that you feel the price of the Epson is similar to a bnew laptop.

I don't think I would want to purchase a PC laptop just to compromise the extra features it can do over an Epson P5000. Especially, if I already own a laptop. Much more if its already a Mac. It doesn't make any sense at all to own 2 laptops.. Well, that's just me..

However, one remote option I would consider is probably getting a second hand 12" Powerbook (mainly because of its size and compatibility with the Mac OS system that I use). Provided too it is within the exact price of a bnew Epson P5000. But one has to also consider the condition of a pre-owned Powerbook, since most of those that are being sold are already out of warranty.

And finally.. 12" vs. a 5" is a big big difference. Given that the main purpose that you are getting a portable backup and viewing device is primarily because of its size and portability and not really on overall functions.

ArthurLegardo

It's OK for the previous generation model, the P3000 and P5000 have slightly larger and a slightly better screen and they also have the USB connector. The P4500 has faster zooming capabilities than the P2000 and P4000. The battery life could be better on the P4500, watching a 2 hour movie sucks up most of the power from a fully charged battery. I am satisfied? I guess so, the main reason why I bought it was because I didn't have enough money to buy a laptop. :D Incidently, new laptops (AMD FX2 64...or whatever AMD calls their dual core processors) can be found for less than $800 CDN (34kPHP), which is about the price of a P5000 over here.

I see.. So let me reverse the situation.. If you already had a laptop.. Would you have still purchased your P4500?

Thanks for the insights Arvin.. :) I heard that alot of P2000 owners hated the 8bit renaming the P2 did with the files.. Has the P3000 addressed this issue?

I dont know about the 8 bit renaming issue in the P2, In the P3 you can rename folders up to 32 characters long including spaces.

I have an intel iMac at home and already have a heavy photo gear adding a mbp would only give me back aches, the P3000 solves my problem plus i dont have to buy a new lowepro backpack, the p3 with its small size fits in with my other gear in my lowepro nova 5aw bag.

For me its better to travel light. Shoot on lacation, store on location and edit at home or the office. That way you wont miss any photo opportunity.

If I already have a laptop, I'd still buy the Epson P5000 just for use in my safaris. :)

Just to answer...

I have a laptop but still saw the benefit of getting the P3000. Sometimes I bring both sometimes just the P3000

The P3/5000 is quite handy for showing your work around without the hassle of bringing big-sized prints or booting up a laptop (which is quite unwieldy if you think about it).

I used to think that the laptop was enough 'til I got me one of these puppies.

Another plus... if you're bored to death waiting for somebody to arrive for a meeting, you can always whip it out and browse your "work" which also makes for good conversation as well. Think of it as a portable "marketing" tool.

It has a USB in and out port. USB out for conneting your P3000 to a computer and USB in for connecting a powered/low power USB to your P3000.

Think of it this way, you can power up your digicam, connect it to the P3000 and transfer/copy files from the digicam to the P3000. FAT/FAT32 formatted thumb/flash drive need not be powered.

You can also connect a PSP to the P3000 and be able to browse/copy the contents of the PSPs memory stick.

And others. I msure a powered external hard disk can be browsed/copied to or from by the P3000 if so desired.

hmm flasdrive?/ that even makes this more
interesting. Does it have a USB port?

Most likely not. I have a tiny portable, bus-powered hard drive that I would use as my backup drive to store all of my photos in the event that my MBP's hard drive were to crash. I also have two 4GB CF cards so I wouldn't have to worry about running out of memory during a day's shoot, even when shooting in RAW. Another good thing about my MBP is that I can buy the airplane power chord and use it on a long haul flight without having to worry about the battery running out.

If it were just for a day's shoot, I wouldn't bother with a P5000. But I would have use for it on a 5-day safari. I would probably have 15~20Gb worth of flash cards with me so I will have enough for the entire trip. The Epson will serve as my backup device and "light table". I find that idle time after dinner during safaris is the perfect time to rate and classify photos.

Does the epson p5000 support ratings that you could actually transfer the ratings on to lightroom or aperture? So you don't have to rate them over again?

Very well said Raul.. I couldn't agree more on how you perceive your Epson to be... Cheers to that! :)

Where can I get a good screen protector for the Epson P5000? :)

i wouldn't get a screen protector... kinda detracts from the viewing pleasure, colors aren't as saturated, imo. i don't think it scratches that easily anyway. at any rate, i don't know where to get a protector ;)

I bought a couple (for my P4500) through eBay. Just like an iPod or your cellphone, the screen will scratch over time.

I haven't removed the original plastic protector. It serves as my P3000's screen protector

Anyone know where to get an Ultra Clear P3000 screen protector locally? Or can bring in one?

Thanks!

There are screen protectors being sold for 150 pesos in CDR King shops. I don't know if the size covers the entire width of the screen. The quality is good btw. Saw one stuck on my brother's iPod Touch :D

I heard of some of these devices dying over the course of time.
Would it be advisable to clone the system contents of the p3000/p5000 before starting to use it?
If so, how did you do it? Would it be possible to do it through the USB port?
