Hi Carlo, Thanks for viewing. I had my camera modified. The low pass filter was replaced by special IR glass. Currently it shoots 30%IR, 40% Normal Light and 30% UV light.

Shutter speed is like shooting in daylight compared to using long exposures with a IR filter mounted on the Lens.

I had it done in Jakarta, Indonesia. There are 3 versions for this IR modification.
Version 3 = Pure Infrared. Good for Landscapes. Like surreal BW images.
Version 5 = Like what I have, Good for landscapes with people. Skin tone is 80% normal. You can use a red filter to get almost pure infrared.
Version 6 = Almost the same as version 5 but gives out a very saturated yellow color on leaves and very very blue sky. Applicable only to 5d and 1dsmk2.

By the way all modifications are applicable to Canon and Nikon Cameras only.

Hi Ruel,

Images are good but look kinda fake. Why don't you buy some real infrared film like some Kodak HIE and shoot them with a manual camera while changing the film in a dedicated light proof bag? Now that's is what I would call infrared. Black and white and grainy. These images look like all those HDR tone mapping images just recently posted. Are we into photography here or digital art?

Are we into photography here or digital art?

A little bit of both in my opinion.

The forum is digital photographer so they belong here.

Nice work Ruel!

Gabby,

Infra-red in film is not limited to black and white. There is also color infra-red.

Dave,

Unless you have seen and are familiar with the real stuff, then it would be difficult to replicate it. The pictures' colors are somewhat there, but the overall "feel" is different. One thing is that the "bloom" is not there.

What I would suggest is that people try to access viewing the real thing. By doing so, one's eye is exposed to the visual nuances of the medium/material. Hopefully, this will help them recreate what is claimed. Kidding ourselves will not help us push to develop our imagery.

Gabriel,

I tried Infrared Film last time. It was a lot of trouble for me printing the images in Singapore as I need to pass every of my belongings in the customs Xray machine.
I know its a lot more different from Digital. I guess this is the new Digital Infrared. I like the images eventhough it looks fake.

Dave,
Thanks.

jeez ruel,

fantastic images!!! and you had the guts to modify your camera. are the changes, er, reversible?

but really nice work. can i ask you if the said effects are achievable using screw-on filters (without post-processing first)? i think richard larrios utilized a colored IR filter in one of his shots and it was amazing!

Hi Jay,

I tried before with my 1dmk2 with a 16-35 + hoya r72, the exposure was so long at daytime and the colors where not really pleasing plus the hot spots in the center of the frame, I guess canon never really made cameras for IR use. So i had my new shiny 30d modified after using a friends modified 5d. I was hooked..

My friends are using Nikon D70 and the results are amazing using the hoya R72.

It's reversible by the way.

Ruel

Yes I am familiar with it and I shot IR during the late 80's.

As time marches on, change is inevitable.

I also love LP records, but I'm not gonna ever openly advocate that CDs are worse.

The "new" digital IR doesn't replicate film based infrared captures, but same can be said of film IR, it can't do the stuff digital IR can do as well. So now we just have to decide for ourselves individually what one prefers and personally, I prefer digital IR because there are more in-camera adjustments that can be done that is not possible with film based IR unless you are very adept in the darkroom.

can you get the ir effect using photoshop?
thanks!

dave_deluria
09-01-2006, 11:34 AM
I tried.

Not much success though.

There was a big tendency to end up with a high contrast B&W image using the channel mixers in Photoshop.

I'm sure it's possible, but the time and effort required just doesn't make it practical.

There are some photoshop plug-ins available. I haven't tried those and I don't want to because it's still cheaper to get a R72 than going thru the software route which still might not be satisfactory.

However, if you do find a good solution, please share it with us.

stupid question - what's a r72?

dave_deluria
09-01-2006, 11:42 AM
Oh... that's the filter...Hoya R72 infrared filter (http://www.hiltonphoto.co.uk/products/details/6138.html). For those who don't/can't modify their cameras for IR, you can get a filter that will allow your DSLR to take IR.

Richard Larrios' image on the back pages of Issue #3 used an IR filter if I'm not mistaken. It's even more amazing because Canon DSLRs are generally a poor choice for IR photography using a IR filter.

can you get the ir effect using photoshop?
thanks!

actually, it can be done using chanel mixer, selective color, color balance, hugh saturation, history brush, masking, blending modes...well...if you want me to make a tutorial, it would probably take a whole lot of real estate on this board. in any case, unless you're really fast with PS, go for the filter nalang...i know i gave up!

:-)

Peace!

Hi Guys!!

Ohhhhh!! Infrared!! I love photographing in infrared using Kodak HIE Film. I usually rate this at asa 400 and shoot through a red filter. Here are some of my samples.

http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/photography/showphoto.php?photo=89&si=pilar%20tuason

http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/photography/showphoto.php?photo=90&si=pilar%20tuason

http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/photography/showphoto.php?photo=36&si=pilar%20tuason

The difference between digital and kodak HIE is the halation effect and the grain. I do have the Hoya R72 filter to achieve through digital but I find it ännoying¨since you cant hand hold it and the exposure times are extremely long.. The leaves end up blurred because of the exposure time...sometimes its good but most times i prefer sharp details.
