View Full Version : California Birding: Snowy Egret
Gil Tuzon 08-30-2006, 12:29 PM With the Bigma DG back from repair last week, continued my Sony A100 testing. In my overcast morning walk last week in a nearby lake park, noticed a solitary snowy egret having breakfast. Overcast is good for this bright bird. Caught the same egret in various activities (about 6-7 images) with some looked like some exercise. Looked like it was trying for a fish but not with the feathers/wings that high up.
enjoy,
gil

Romy Ocon 08-30-2006, 01:35 PM Excellent images, Gil... looks like the A100 is a winner!
The reflection on the placid water surface puts the first two images over the top.

Ali Mangaliag 08-30-2006, 03:44 PM nice shots... they look like paintings with that background (overcast and water)
:)
tina mallari 08-30-2006, 07:26 PM Like Romy said, EXCELLENT photos Gil !!!!! I specially like photos 2 & 3.
I've seen pictures taken with the A100 and most of them are really noisy. Did you do special magic to remove them ? I'm asking kasi I'm looking into getting another dslr and I have this habit of researching to death before I finally decide on what to get
nap_alcedo 08-30-2006, 07:38 PM Awesome shots Gil. On the other hand, this might be a little OT but since you are still in the "testing" stage of the A100, I noticed some dust in the one o'clock position in your first two shots. Seems like the "anti-dust" property of this camera is not working as advertised... :)
Reyno Rosete 08-30-2006, 08:18 PM Well done Gil. The reflections on the first two are just perfect.

Thanks much Romy. Except for the noise at ISO800/1600, it is a very likable camera and will probably keep it. Also I am doing some more testing in minimizing the high ISO noise by going as wide/get more light as much as possible.

Hi Tina,
Aoppreciate the generous comments (the others too). I am happy so far with the A100 except the noise at high ISO. Per my input to Romy, I am trying to minimize those (first by avoiding low light shots http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/images/smilies/Drogar-BigGrin%28DBG%29.gifand getting more light - exposure compensation/bigger aperture/lower shutter speed). The shots were taken at ISO200 with some exposure compensation. From observations and some tests done, the ISO rating of the A100 seems to be quite conservative. In my KM 5D, I usually do ISO400 but in the A100, I am defaulting to ISO200 while maintaining the rest of my settings the same. So for ISO800 in KM5D, I am seeing that I could use ISO400 with some +exposure compensation to get the same effect.
My post processing is just basic - some highlight/shadows in PSCS2, crop and a bit of noise removal and sharpening if needed. The problem with going into another system is the lens issue and that was why I could only go to Sony after Konica Minolta closed down their photo group.
Most shots I've seen from the A100, like you said were not optimum. Try to visit the Sony SLR forum in dpreview and look for shots from Aarif or Papasha. Let me know if you need more insight from the A100.

gil

Hi Nap,
Appreciate the kind comments. Those dust like spot doesn't seem to be dust but more like debris in the water. I saw them too and I looked at my other sky shots and there were not there but yes, there is still an issue whether their anti-dust works. I posted in the Sony SLR forum (in www.dpreview.com) about my dust encounter after 1 week of constant lens changing. Per my experience, the dust spots I am seeing were rounder and more transparent. Thanks for the concern and yes, the anti-dust is still up for confirmation.
