Went through old photos (of which I have a lot of since I keep everything), decided to see how they'd turn out using photomatix....

This one from about 7 different photos of the same scene at different exposures...

I'm definitely having fun with this software. Certainly worthwhile to see how your old photos would turn out during those days when the conditions sux for photography.

@Giovanni,

Can you share some tips on HDR? I'm a complete zero in photoshop...Thanks!

gio great photos, i remember ordering salted fish fried rice in the very same street in sf years back. one thing i notice with almost all hdr pics is the color and rendition of the background clouds.

Great experiment. The last photo was your best HDR. I can see some halo effect from the rest.

nice. how many bracket shots did you take for your HDR?

:) hochi, I think they're using Photomatrix in this set of pics.

Thanks for the comments, y'all.

@hochi: I'd like to give you tips on HDR but I really can't. I just started using photomatix last week  so I'm a complete newbie. I did browse through some of the hdr groups over at flickr and followed some of the links that were provided there.

@ edwin: The first 3 photos were each done using a single raw file. I used ACR to get 3-4 different EV values then merged/tone mapped them in photomatix. The last photo, I shot the scene at varying shutter speeds (1/6 to 1/125) then merged/tm'd with photomatix. Strictly beginner stuff for me.

that's the beauty of shooting raw :) you can still play around with em if you get bored with usual single exposures.

you can also get hdr-looking effects with the shadow/highlights recovery tool of CS2 right? I mis-clicked on something the last time i tried it and it gave me a weird but nice effect :)

That's why I shoot raw all the time. I find it easier to correct some of the mistakes I make (I'm still pretty much a beginner in this). And yes, it's always fun to go back and play around with them. BTW, thanks for that info re: ps. Will have to give that a try.

Nice thread...

Lemme try HDR...

Used 3 frames -2 0 +2 and merged to HDR (CS2)

Whaddayathink? That looks good. Mine never comes out that well when I use ps.

I tried using the single RAW and exporting it at various exposures, but they just didn't work for me so I just took bracketed exposures on a tripod and merged them.

Results do vary, but I'm careful not to allow any final HDR image to have that halo effect when you overdo it.

He're my first experiment on HDR using hdrshop and diffrent tonemapping operators.

@ dave: I had the same problem with cs2 when using a single raw image. It just didn't come out right. Since I'm now using pretty much just photomatix, using a single raw image produces more noticeable noise when tone mapping.

@mitspicardal: that's pretty cool. Also, I really like the design of that house.

@ jonix: Thanks, bro.

This one from several raws of differing exposures....

Looking at dave's cs2 hdr, I decided to try it too. Same image as above, using several raw images of differing exposures, used cs2's hdr function to merge the images then played around with hues, saturation, contrast, brightness, and usm. Here is the result. I think it's more of a realistic image. Have to work at it though (guess I'm lazy  )

photomatix huh? where's that available? how much? i'd like to try it... i tried merge to HDR in CS 2, but some things don't come out right... (and i can't even place my finger on what's wrong with it actually)... is this photomatix solely for HDR? thanks!

I'm not a mac user so i cant answer your question. I think you should contact HDRSoft Tech support at support@hdrsoft.com
