john_javellana 08-28-2006, 09:07 AM hi guys,
what's a good brand for an external hard drive? any suggestions where to get one?
thanks in advance,
John
nino_carandang 08-28-2006, 09:11 AM I'm sure you're gonna get a reply from Dave soon.
What works for us here is Maxtor and Lacie. We usually get them from Park Square.
Rob might PM you also.
fidel_mercado 08-28-2006, 09:15 AM The Iomega Minimax has good reviews. I personally use a generic hard drive and case though, works well, no problems so far. Just be cautious of firewire cases if it's not branded; I had one before and the circuit burned out... and check if the drive has warranty too.
Goodluck!
dinolara 08-28-2006, 09:19 AM I use Iomega a lot. Great value for money. I also have Lacie and Maxtor and they are OK too.
lestercallanta 08-28-2006, 09:34 AM Am using the LaCie mini Hard Drive and Hub (http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10462) as a Firewire hard drive to store my images and music. Comes with additional USB and Firewire ports for connecting other devices. Performance is pretty good with a fanless low-noise operation.

john, if you're in a tight budget and you need a large capacity HD, go to any store in Gilmore ave, QC (St Paul's, QC) and buy an internal hard disk and a HD encasement with USB2 / firewire ports... this is the cost-effective way of having a large capacity external HD... also, make sure you scout all the stores for the best-looking encasement, ok? hindi lang kasi lenses and cameras ang nakakadagdag pogi points.:D
but if your budget permits for a branded ext HD, i have friends who are happy for so long with their Maxtor ext HDs... yup, handsome casing of course, but very pricey and has low capacity ...
so it's up to you ok?
btw, check out CD-R King in the area ... i once saw that store with a handsome encasement... baka sakaling available pa:)
Marton_Benitez 08-28-2006, 09:17 PM 250gig Iomega for music, videos, documents and pics. But it looks to me i need another one to speparate my pics from Vids, music and documents. :)
It works like a charm

sami_deleon 08-29-2006, 08:11 AM Dino my idol,
Try Villman if they still have Maxtor 300gb (mark II). I think I saw it on sale at less than 9k. I'm also planning to get one myself.
dinolara 08-29-2006, 08:15 AM Master Sami,
Got that Maxtor 300GB at Gilmore at 9K months ago but I don't like the plastic case. It's working fine but I like the looks of Iomega. I think I saw some Seagate also at Gilmore which less than 9K for 300GB.
Dick_reyes 08-29-2006, 08:27 AM Fujitsu works fine ext for laptop, Seagate works well too.
Carlo R. Lopez 08-29-2006, 10:26 AM i like the lacie ones. they look slick and trick
randy_bautista 09-03-2006, 05:46 AM I just got those cheapo external USB cases for the 2.5" laptop drives and got a Seagate 80Gb drive in greenhills... Drive P3k, case P380... good enough for me

Lacie's a bit more expensive than the My Book. So far, I'm doing benchmarks with the My Book Pro 1TB triple interface, and am satisfied with the results. Make sure you read the manual and choose between RAID 0 or RAID 1. Here's my first run results with using XBench 1.0 on the My Book on RAID 0.
Sequential
Uncached Write 8.25 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Write 7.59 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Read 5.27 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Read 41.51 MB/sec [256K blocks]
It's faster than my Seagate BTO Barracuda drive and the triple interface d2 Lacie. It's a recommended buy. Although it doesn't look as slick as the Lacie.
randytamayo 07-28-2007, 11:06 PM Nino,
Do you have prices? Across all the available sizes (not just the 1TB model)
My ext HD has barely 30GB left and its crying out for reinforcements.
As with the Lacie looks vs My Book looks, i heard somewhere that performace is better than looks.
:D

I'll come up with it. Give me next week.
CocoyLopez 07-31-2007, 09:27 AM RAID 0 is the fastest amongst RAID configuration (1, 5, 10 etc). The only disadvantage with RAID 0 is that when one member disk fails, the whole RAID fails thereby data recovery is impossible.
nickformoso 07-31-2007, 10:03 AM Does anyone use a Maxtor Onetouch III? I've been trying to get it to work with both my PC and my Macbook, but for some reason, the Macbook can't mount it, even if I had already formatted the drive to FAT32 (which in theory should be read/writable by both PC and Mac).
When I first bought it, it was NTFS format, so naturally it didn't work with the Macbook. I was able to format the entire drive to one FAT32 partition, but it still doesn't work! Windows reads it fine, but Mac OSX still insists it's a read-only drive (thus, I can't even format it using Apple's Disk Utility or Terminal).
It's really frustrating, and I've googled this to death to no avail. Do you guys recommend any other external HD that can be used on both systems? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

hi nick,
in theory formatting in fat32 should make your one touch work with your mac. i'll see what answers i can find about this issue.
as towards an external HD recommendation, here's a list to start you off with
storage and size
1. WD My Book Pro (and Pro II)
2. Seagate FreeAgent Desktop and Pro
3. Lacie d2 Extreme
portability
1. WD Passports
2. Lacie Porsche Edition
3. Seagate FreeAgent Mobile
if you plan to do the DIY external drives, make sure that you DO NOT use an external drive casing that uses the PROFILIC/PROLIFIC chipset and CHOOSE one with the OXFORD chipset. this assures cross platform compatibility and connectivity via USB 2.0 and FIREWIRE (issues with the PROLIFIC case in FIREWIRE).

dude,
here's the SRP for the 1TB Pro Mac Edition: 21,500.
nickformoso 07-31-2007, 11:29 AM Nino,
Thanks for the tips! Yeah, I was considering the DIY option as well, so what you said was very useful.
As to the FAT32 problem, the closest I got to an answer was found in this forum:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=253109
Apparently the OP has the same problem as me, and was using Maxtor Onetouch as well. There didn't seem to be a resolution however. Maybe this is really a Maxtor problem (although for the life of me, I don't see how it can be that since everything is wiped off when the drive is reformatted)
randytamayo 07-31-2007, 03:07 PM Thanks Bro.
To re-echo Nino, DIY is a cheaper alternative but the boxed ones from WD, Lacie, Maxtor or Seagate I would think are more reliable.
:)

ArthurLegardo 07-31-2007, 07:21 PM @nick, when you connect the OneTouch to the Macbook are you the USB cable and external power? The USB ports on some Macbooks are not powerful enough to power an external drive on their own. I read in a Mac forum that the ports only give off 500ma, but the drive requires 1000ma to boot up. You can find double headed USB cable on eBay or use a USB powered hub or us external power for the drive. FWIW, I bought a 160GB WD Passport (the thin black one) as a supplemental drive for my MBP, and it works great!
nickformoso 07-31-2007, 09:37 PM @arthur
Hi, I already tried both. The USB cable that came with the drive has two USB heads - one is the main head which is what you need to connect to most USB ports, while the other is meant to be connected to a second USB port, if the first USB port is underpowered. I already tried both scenarios - connecting just the main head, and connecting both. Unfortunately, it still didn't work!
Thanks though. This is really frustrating...
mark corpuz 08-01-2007, 03:27 AM Got mine..120 gb Maxtor onetouch lll mini edition..now i just need to buy my own laptop and stop using the company issued one for my photos..

Is the One-Touch III a 2.5" or 3.5" drive? If it's a 3.5" it may be too power hungry to powered strictly by the USB bus, no matter how many ports you use. Maybe?
nickformoso 08-01-2007, 10:21 AM @Arthur
It's a mini edition - similar to what mark mentioned above (although mine's just 100gb). If that's the case, i'm not sure how to go about it; the double-headed usb connection was the only one that came with the drive :( walang adaptor/power cable.
@Mark
If you buy a mac and get it to work, please let me know how you did it! :)
Thanks guys :)
nickformoso 08-01-2007, 10:25 AM oh - i just found out that the new Maxtors drives are now compatible with both Windows and Mac OS, so it's highly possible that Mark's drive is compatible with both. Mine was probably an older version.
me = lugi.
