you can try a close up filter or extension tubes to get the desired macro effect

Here's a sample using Kenko extention tubes + EF 50mm 1.8

Dave, am just curious, how near was the lens to the subject? Was wondering if a longer (reach) lens would be more ideal with either extension tubes or a macro lens instead so you'd have a comfortable working distance.

It was very very near. I estimate less than 5 centimeters.

I used all 3 tubes that came with the set so that image is greater than 1:1 (just to see what it can really do). The above image is NOT cropped.

Thanks for the info Dave.

BTW, just found out (http://www.shutterfreaks.com/Tips/ExtensionTube.htm) that the longer the lens, the lesser magnification it will give you.

Brandon,

Holy Macro! (sorry, it was too easy). How did you 'roll your own ' extension tubes? How did you focus & meter? Am assuming that by putting more space between your lens'rear glass element and the camera body, the two won't communicate - so you harken back to manual focus and bracketing ... was this the case at all? All trial and trial?:)

Great shot!

Reversing rings or extension tubes are the way to go with 50mm.
Here are the ratios for extension tubes on 50mm if my my memory serves me right.
A 50mm extension tube will have a magnification of 1:1,
A 25mm extension tube will give you a magnification of 1:2
A 12mm extension tube will give you a magnification of 1:4

You can use other lenses on these as well. Remember, the smaller the focal length, the greater the magnification and the closer you have to be to the subject.
