Hi..i just want to ask if pentax smc P-A 200mm F2.8 ED will fit on k10D and what does it mean by manual focus with automatic aperture.

bongmanayon
09-16-2007, 01:48 PM
Yes it would. Most of my workhorses are manual focus A lenses (see this thread (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=7735)). You will focus manually but will have full auto exposure capability.

Yikes! Last ebay auction I saw was upwards of 800USD.:RedEye: You don't need a converter if it is in K-mount. All Pentax dslrs will work with all k-mount lenses without the need for converters.

Check out this one at ebay:

Oh...I thought you had one (ako sana hihiram...)!

That is one rare item and as Nols mentioned, very expensive. You may have better luck acquiring the new DA* 50-135/2.8 for your K10D (it could even be cheaper as well).

Am not sure where in Davao to look, but here in Metro Manila, Hidalgo (Quiapo) is basically the only place to go. Willing to buy online? Check out the following places:

The used section of Adorama (http://www.adorama.com).
KEH.com (http://www.keh.com) is the traditional place to look for used stuff (Georgia USA)

Ebay stores to keep your eye on:

K-Mount Treasures (http://stores.ebay.com/K-Mount-Treasures_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm ) (expensive but beautiful stuff)
The Pentax Penthouse (http://stores.ebay.com/The-Pentax-penthouse_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm )
Henry's (http://stores.ebay.com/henrys-com_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm) (Canada) seasonal...right now they mostly have new stuff

Of course...that would work. Nols got one so he should have specific info re that particular model. Sigma has a reputation for bad quality control though (see the Sigma thread) so that always haunts me. I owned a Sigma 55-200 then (got lucky it was not a bad copy) Franz eventually bought from me....

yup, I heard that concern! 1 advise really is to bring your cam with you for testing if you gonna buy one. I think the lens is cheap & I've read good feedbacks about this. Hope to hear one from sir Nols!

At KEH and those Ebay stores I've mentioned, they usually tend to underrate the items. I bought a lens from KEH rated EX and it arrived LN (like new)! I've seen items rated BGN (bargain) arriving in very good condition. Definitely different from how we would rate our own equipment ("slightly used" HAH!?!!).

How about screwmounts..what does it mean?

bongmanayon

How about screwmounts..what does it mean?

Screwmounts (a.k.a. M42 mounts) were lenses made by Pentax before 1975. They came with the original Asahiflex and later Spotmatics which were the granddaddies of modern Pentaxes. They happily work with DSLRs as well. See the Manual Lens (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=7735) thread for some of our stories. To work on the K-mount, they would require an adapter:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1248/1369977753_710ee34284.jpg
Pepost from the Manual Lens thread: my Takumar 28/3.5 screwmount lens with a Canon P adapter (left) and the Pentax K-mount adapter (right). For our purposes, we need the K-Mount adapter to mount an M42 lens on Pentax DSLRs. Go figure what the "P" stands for...

bongmanayon

Oh speaking of Davao...there are two items in EBay.ph which are located there...

SMCP A 50/2
http://www.ebay.ph/viItem?ItemId=330165790002

CPC Phase 2 28-50/3.5-5-6
http://www.ebay.ph/viItem?ItemId=330165827023

Franz bought from that seller already so it seems okay.

One more thing, CPC Phase 2 seems to be a subsidiary of Pentax at one time (see here (http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/zooms/_non-SMC/index.html)) either supplying lenses for Pentax (OEM?) or however/whatever. Anyway, that lens is the same as the SMCP M 28-50/3.5-5.6 (here (http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/zooms/short/M28-50f3.5-4.5.html)) but without the SMC.

Thought you might be interested. :)

we're only on the second page of this thread and kent is already asking about screwmounts!!! what a relief that he's in davao. once he's in manila, our supply of old manual lenses might deplete drastically.

KENT LOSENTES

wahaha..how i wish i could go to manila and go "shopping"..hehe.. does these screwmounts bundled with adaptor?
:)

bongmanayon
09-16-2007, 10:29 PM
Nope, not all screwmount junkies are necessarily Pentax K-mount users, the M42 mount was also compatible with other brands as well during its time (i.e., Praktica, Fujica, to name a few). My other adapter allows me to use my Pentax screwmount with my Canon manual focus cameras. The K-mount adapter cost about P700-800.

Oh, if you do search that online, be sure to buy orig Pentax adapters and not third party made ones. The reason being is that some third party made adapters extend outside the camera body making it sort of an extension tube and in the process, you lose infinity focus (you do gain some macro capability though...).

Pentax masters, what can you say about the Sigma 70-300mm macro lens? is it a good option as zoom lens for a K10D?

I got the 70-300mm APO Macro Super version (I think the APO DG is newer) used from KEH. The zoom ring is a bit sticky but atleast there's no zoom creep. I like the colors I get from this lens. Others prefer the Tamron version - supposedly sharper at the 300mm end but I quite satisfied with mine. Basically, I use this for critter and airplane shots (hardly use the macro).

It is a bit heavy. If you're looking for a good alternative then the Pentax DA 50-200mm is another great choice - small, light, and great colors.

One pic at 300mm (cropped):
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a199/NolsP/Balloon%20Festival/IMGP5194red.jpg

If you're going to order a new one(Sigma) from JTPhoto, there's a 1-month waiting time as they don't stock lenses in Pentax mount. Good luck on your purchase.:)

Thanks for the info sir Nols! As compared to the Pentax 50-200mm, it seems Sigma lens has more zoom, has macro feature, & much cheaper.

Franz, while using Larry's SMCP DA 18-55 last Saturday, I realized that its close focusing capability of .25m is as good as it gets. That is as good as my SMCP A 35-70/4. Only real macro lenses can focus closer (DFA 50: .2m).

Macro lenses are the best for this purpose Pentax has 50, 100 and 200mm real macro lenses.
I hardly use high magnification close up lens filters because the quality is not that good.
If you want extreme magnification you an attach your macro lens to a bellows unit,

naman!
for a bellows setup you need a continous light source of at least 25watts with reflector, although an additional eZcube will make it more perfect.
and a manual cable release.
just be careful because dust can easliy set in because unlike other lenses the front of the lens barrel is open, I've never tried this on digital. With my Pentax LX the outcome is fantastic.

victor_vesuna

sure!let's talk about it,I'm available on weekends, just pm me
it's a reflector with a light bulb attached, eZcube is similar to a light tent, this assures that light is evenly distributed and eliminates unwanted reflections from your subject.

What were you taking a photo of? Do I assume you're using the built-in flash?

Night shots, available light and flash photography are addressed differently. Any mode (Av, Tv, etc.) can be used depending on the outcome you expect. For starters, night shots and available light photography assumes you want to capture the ambient lighting of the scene. In which case you may not need the flash at all (except maybe for fill). Generally flash photography kills the ambient lighting leaving you with a stark paparazzi photo unless you have something robust like an external flash.

Av mode is the setting where you decide on the aperture and the camera selects the shutter speed for you. That would work, except you have to watch your numbers that it does not dive down ridiculously lower than what your anti-shake can handle. A large aperture helps but given the selectable ISO and your K10D's anti-shake, it may be a relative thing.

Broad answers, but then we would need more specifics if your want more details

KENT LOSENTES
09-17-2007, 09:46 PM
Yup sir, i was using buit in flash..as i was taking a shot with flash on and distanced myself approx 1.5meters with the subject, the shot was good. i think i distanced myself very closely with the subject thats why it kills the ambient lighting. Is it?

bongmanayon
09-17-2007, 09:58 PM
Oh okay, you can only improve so much that shot using the built-in flash. For one thing you cannot aim the flash anywhere else except straight on. I think what you envision are shots that uses an external flash (see how Joey wields his K10D and his 540 flash in this thread (http://digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=8459) ...yup almost all the shots taken in that thread had a flash).

Suggest that until you get around to acquiring a AF360FGZ or AF540FGZ flash, work on available light photography saving that built in flash for desperate measures.

That's about the only time I ever use that by itself.

Btw, have you seen those ebay.ph lenses located in Davao?

bongmanayon
09-17-2007, 10:34 PM
A cheaper alternative to orig Pentax flashes is the Sigma 530 something (new model...I haven't really kept track of it). There's a thread on that somewhere.

Hidalgo? They come and go. Usually, when we go there on a hunt, you have money ready so you'd be able to grab a lens when you see it. They could be anywhere as low as P500 to P7000 (oddly enough the price is directly proportional to length of the lens...). I would PM you a direct means of contacting me so we can have a link when the time comes. Franz is due to visit Davao soon so we have a courier just in case (binolunteer si Franz...).

You have to be awfully 'nice' to us up here since we usually cut each other's throat to get a lens ... :D

It is a not so hidden secret that the old FA 28-105/4-5.6 IF (http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/zooms/short/FA28-105f4-5.6-ii.html) & FA 28-200/3.8-5.6 IF (http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/zooms/short/FA28-200f3.8-5.6.html) were made by Tamron (my walk around lens happened to be the 28-105 version) so they could do it again. Although I wouldn't know how that would figure into Pentax's new relationship with Tokina.

None really, if you mean 'good & cheap,' macro lenses tend to cost a bit more. Third party lens prices (Sigma & Tamron) isn't too far from Pentax macro lenses'. I'm talking about brand new though; the real deal with Pentax is you could get a hold of old manual focus lenses which would happily work with the K10D.
