I am having trouble changing the color of a picture of a lady in a full black dress. I don't have the same problem with other colors.

To do a selective color change, I go via the Replace Color or Color Range route. However, with the black dress, I am not able to do it. Same with a White T-Shirt.

What am I missing?

I also use selective color. duplicate the layer. add a new adjustment layer>hue and saturation. adjust the color i wanted. image>adjustment>variations.

after the colorization, I duplicate the layer (dress which has been colorize), invert, change layer to overlay, add a high pass filter, value 5-10, it depends on how you want your photo to look. we do this process bcoz as we change the black color dress to any other color, we add a noise to the picture, not unlike other colors.

if you still see noise, use the smudge tool to eliminate it. use a strength of 20-25% and smudge the dress.

after this, dodge and burn it. use curves to follow the shadows of the dress.

you see, it's not a 1,2,3 steps. hope this helps.

I rarely use lasso tool. I only use it in a very quick extraction. I use pen tool.

yes, I use layer mask. Every now and then i used it because it really helps me a lot with my manips. Putting layer mask in extractions make save the hassle of retracing your paths. If you miss something, you can easily fix it in the layer mask.

Once you get to make your selection (either via masking, color range, etc.), just add a hue/saturation adjustment. Set to 'colorize', then make sure you raise the lightness so the black turns to grey. Once a color is grey, you can now move the hue and saturation lever to get what you want.
