View Full Version : Alpha Mini-EB - Taal Lake Yacht Club
jagey nave 09-11-2007, 09:12 AM Decided to start this thread for planning purposes...pls. sign up, we can just decide later if we get sufficient numbers if we'll go in October or November. I am also attaching part of Peter's email below for reference (check out the link for some sample shots from TLYC).

>PHOTOGRAPHY
>To verify, our monthly schedule is second sunday. Photo boats. No, you definitely
>dont need a housing. Its always good to have a garbage bag to stash your >equipment if it rains,or if there is a patch of waves, or something like that. the only
>time you MIGHT need housing is Jan, or feb, at the nationals, when the water can
>et rough. However, tese pics were all taken without a housing, and there was no
>damage to any of the cameras. Note that the lake is FRESH water, not salt. So at
>least you don't need to worry about the fine spray in the air, corroding your
>equipment, unlike on the sea.

jeffreybuot 09-11-2007, 09:47 AM Hi guys.... just reposting this message about this plan EB.
From Jagey................
************************************************** *
Hi all:
I'm posting it here first as I would prefer as much attendance from fellow alphaholics as possible. I just received formal confirmation from Taal Lake Yacht Club's Commodore (Peter Capotosto) that they are willing to host us and shoot their monthly regattas. Their next schedule is on 14 October - but Peter warned me that the wind normally doesn't pick up until November (my mistake, its been years since I visited last, I was under the impression that sailing season was earlier hehe).
Anyway in case there is interest, please PM and sound off to me or to Jeff Buot (vinolunteer na kita bro) and we'll try to arrange this. Also please advise if you prefer to go in October or in November (tentatively set on the 11th). TLYC is even willing to provide us with a photo boat if this pushes through. Their is also an annual volcano run the third week of November but a lot of photographers/media have already signed up for that so chances of us getting into a photo boat isn't so good.
TLYC is about 15 minutes from the Sta. Rosa/Tagaytay junction. Other possible activities if we've had our fill of shooting TLYC's fleet would be volcano trek (ayaw na yata mag-trek ni Moises ulit :)), sailing class (kayak, dinghy, hobie cats) or island hopping...
isi laureano 09-11-2007, 10:10 AM you mean we are all goin to ride a boat? hahahaha saya!
jagey if u see the competitors list, my uncle is there, dennis cruz
anyways, i would really love to join! wag naman sana mahulog mga cam natin sa tubig! hahahahah!:D:D:D
but for me i prefer november, or whatever is the confirmed plan. go ako! if time and money permits me! hahahaha!:D:D:)

jagey nave 09-11-2007, 10:57 AM wow...mitz is coming with us! what an honor. go na go na talaga ito.
I think most of the alphaholics (based in Manila are now listed)...so we'd be happy if others can join as well. I would however need to limit the participants to 20 for now (in case there are more interests pa, I would have to clear with TLYC first).
Baka people can also start expressing their preference...II October or November?

Aha...isi, since regular ang uncle mo sa TLYC, you can help in the logistics hehe since I absolutely have no experience organizing an EB, pikit mata lang ito hehe.
And yes, the photo boat will be provided by TLYC...very minimal naman entrance fee. food can be arranged within TLYC's compound (unless you want us to sample your menu Isi hehehe). Those who have tents can bring it as well, TLYC is actually a good place to set up "camp".

jagey nave 09-12-2007, 08:32 AM Ei Jagey, Kabayan, thank you... san sa imus? im an II alumni batch86
ey Ric, in General Topacio compound...the houses and properties behind and beside II in Nueno belong to relatives including the bukid further sa looban where I grew up. ey magkabatch pala tayo (Andrean ako)...you might know some close relatives of mine who I believe graduated the same year, Dave Ramos, D. Ilano and Guill Rayala...
While growing up in Imus I fondly remember stealing mangoes, duhat, santol and sineguelas from the my uncle's and aunt's trees. And while I was only there until I was 6 years old, I frequently returned and stayed every weekend.
Looking forward to meeting you bro.
jagey nave 09-12-2007, 02:23 PM This isn't mine...picture belongs to TLYC just wanted to give you an idea of the place:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1427/1317031086_ac068f68a0.jpg
also just sharing with you additional nformation provided by TLYC:
If you have 12, and one boat, you can:
A) put 6 on the water, and on shore. Or..
B) put 6 on the water, and have 6 hike the volcano, then they switch. that way, everyone goes out on the water, and everyone gets to hike if they want. Hiking the volcano is cheap. it only costs P1500 for the banca to volcano island and back. The banca takes up to 6 so thats P250/person if 6 ride the banca. I would be really happy if everyone did the volc trip because then you would really fall into the regular club activities and be exempt from all cabana charges, and entry fees that we normally charge to non-members.
----------
So, I guess the ideal number would be 12 (or groups of 6 thereafter should there be other interests)...the photo boat earlier discussed can only accommodate 2 photogs at a time so I am arranging for this instead. We can probably postpone the decision on whether to go in October or November until end Sep snce normally, TLYC would be able to share estimation on how obliging the wind will be about one to two weeks in advance. So please keep II Oct free in case we get to go earlier. I've arranged to meet with TLYC's commodore next week...just refer to this thread occasionally for further updates.
jeffreybuot 09-13-2007, 08:51 AM Just an update, 5 slots available. we can exceed to 12 but as jagey just said that our number ideally should be 6 divisible per group.

By the way I forgot to ask...anybody interested to take up sailing lessons? let me know and I'll see if I can arrange it. Normally it's five whole days but I'll see if they can offer an intro or something. There are vests for rent in TLYC or you can bring your own.

Hi Red:
Weird, I swear your message wasn't there when I accessed the forum this morning. We'll arrange for transpo and just divide the cost among the participants...it's cheaper if we can carpool...(3 cars with 4 pax max = 12). I can bring my car, please sound off whoever else is planning to bring their ride and are willing to take on passengers.
Or, we can also rent a van if not enough people want to drive to the place...the drive to TLYC is actually very pleasant.
hey isi, I have a question...first time we went to TLYC sometime ago, we got lost and ended up taking this road from the rotunda (down to talisay) the view was spectacular and if I remember correctly, it may be a great place to go on detour and take pictures. I wasn't in photography then and my memory isn't so good at it used to...so I only remember that the road wasn't very ideal - do you happen to know if that road has been repaired? or still in a state of disrepair? (it's the next road in the rotunda, after and beside the one going to taal vista lodge)

jagey nave 09-20-2007, 09:24 AM hi all...so sorry but no update from me yet. We had to cancel the meeting with Peter as we are expecting some VIPs in the office today (WTO Director General, UNCTAD Sec Gen, GMA and several finance and trade ministers are visiting our office) hence security arrangements are just too bothersome this week. We have to reset the meeting for Friday next week and I will hopefully have more firm plans for you after then. Please keep your calendars free, this is still a go.

Hi Sony peeps, would like to join if it's okay with you guys... have a Sony walkman, does that count? :)
Anyway just put my name on the list in case I can go on the decided date.
jagey nave 09-27-2007, 04:33 PM I just had lunch with Peter (TLYC's Commodore) earlier. It seems the wind is a bit late this year so II October may not be a good time to go to TLYC. They have even moved November's scheduled race by a week to 18 November, ergo this will also be our final date for the mini-EB.
will post more information soon...I'm swamped!

Nope, were still intact!
jagey nave 10-17-2007, 10:33 AM What: Digital Photographers Philippines - TLYC mini-EB
When: Sunday, 18 November 2007
Choice 1. Ordinary Fees/Prices (no crater tour)
A. Entrance fee : P100/day per pax
B. Hut: : P500/day per hut
C. Rent of Boat : P1800 per boat (maximum charge, but TLYC is arranging for 50% discount)
(chase/photo boat) (max of 6 pax for entire duration of the regatta)
Choice 2. Package Price with crater tour via the "Ambassador Kristie Kenny Trail"
A. Crater Tour : P1,800/boat (max of 6 pax)
inclusive of P300 Guide (for 6 pax)
inclusive of Entrance fee and Hut (for those not joining the crater tour or bringing
kids/spouses)
Additional charges for municipal fee (P50 per pax) and Banca Landing (P50 per boat)
B. Rent of Boat : P1800 per boat (maximum charge, but TLYC is arranging for 50% discount)
(chase/photo boat) (max of 6 pax for entire duration of the regatta)
---------------------------
Based on above, the packages available to us should be both under P1000. But I think availing the crater tour is better as it will give us more options to shoot. It will also allow us to fill up our day as the regattas will not start until the afternoon.
If ever, it will probably be best to arrive early morning for the crater tour to avoid the midday sun (don't forget to bring your Polarizing filters). Shooting proper starts in the afternoon (simultaneous with the regatta). Nothing stops you from shooting earlier of course, there are birds, flowers and butterflies in the morning in TLYC, and hopefully, a few early-bird sailors on whom you can practice your panning shots. There is also a small pool for the kids (adults can opt to take a dip in the lake istead). Life jackets are available, but if you have your own, you may bring one para mas pogi/maganda kayo sa group hug. Would there be interest for a dawn shoot somewhere? Any suggestions?
TLYC strongly recommends cooking-out for Lunch (TLYC aims to promote an adventure-filled/camping culture in the country), but since I am assuming no one is willing to take charge of the cooking chores, you may either opt to bring your own baon or if that's too much of a hassle, we can order food from TLYC's "neighborhood" caterer instead (approximate budget is around P200 per meal). Another option is to go "topside" sa Tagaytay for lunch since it will only be about 15 minutes away.
With the scheduled regatta on this day, there may not be instructors available to provide a one-day introductory course on sailing. But, let me know if you are keen on doing this, if there is enough interest we'll try to arrange to sail for an hour or so, which is like a "cruise" on a large hobie for small groups. If you already know how to sail, we can also arrange for you to rent a dinghy or a hobie cat (minimum of 2 persons) as well.
Lastly, please confirm if you can bring a car and willing to give ride to others. If at least three people are driving, we probably already have enough cars to fit everyone na (four per car, share na lang sa gas). Otherwise we can rent a van.
Suggestions and comments are most welcome.
best,
jagey

jagey nave 10-22-2007, 01:55 PM Sir Jagey, anong trail kaya yung "Ambassador Kristie Kenny Trail"? Kagagaling ko lang kasi dun baka same trail siya so I have to pass if ever. Thanks!
Moises, I was told that the trail isn't the usual "tourist trail" and a bit far from the regular route (hence the slightly higher price of the boat)...apparently this trail is less crowded and it's main difference with the regular trail is that the guides there actually exert more serious efforts at maintaining it (to keep it clean, to control number of ambulant vendors, etc...) and given good conditions, it should be fairly easy to go all the way down to the crater lake itself (the lake within the lake) and not just on the crater "ridge". (Note also that while some people swim in the lake for therapeutic purposes, the water is actually sulfuric and hence may destroy your clothes).
for planning purposes, may I request everyone to reconfirm their participation in the following format:

This should enable us to decide then if we have enough people to proceed or if we need to postpone to another date or cancel this altogether. (Sailing season should last until January next year). We probably need a minimum of 6 pax at least if we are to push through with covering the 18 Nov regatta.

jagey nave 11-07-2007, 11:39 AM Jeff and Moises, I believe most people will not be able to make it on 18 Nov...perhaps we need to reset this...
moiseslua 11-12-2007, 10:18 AM Science :P Oks. Was just wondering if you're also not available?

me ba moises? :) I was/am available...but thought it's better to reset this when we have more people coming. I was actually there yesterday and had a great time sailing again (after 5 years of hiatus!). I only took a few pictures, I know I should have, but I remember thinking if I take photos na, I might not be as excited to go back and shoot.
I might eventually decide to go sa Sunday but since some friends are planning to go again latter part of November I'm taking care not to overuse my "weekend pass" from the misis... It's unlikely, but if ever, I'll text you and Jeff (or announce it here).
Not to worry, there will be other regattas lined up in the ensuing months...and hopefully too we'll still be welcomed by TLYC :)
moiseslua 11-13-2007, 09:01 AM Ok. Just let us know if you get to 'sneak away' from the Commander-in-Chief :D Thanks
jagey nave 11-13-2007, 02:33 PM some pics from last weekend...(heavily post processed, sensiya na, took the liberty of experimenting wildly on these...)

@moises - we took the 'tourist trail' to get to the rim as well...while the trip straight to the crater lake I hope we can still do sometime soon.
moiseslua 11-13-2007, 03:44 PM Nice pics Jagey :) very VIVID ;)
jagey nave 11-16-2007, 08:40 AM Received this email from Peter Capotosto this morning (TLYC's Commodore). Please help me spread the message around. These are for the scheduled Regattas this Saturday and Sunday. I apologize for the short notice, but grateful if you could let me know if there are interests so we can make suitable arrangements...
--------forwarded message----------
1) I'm announcing a photo contest for the weekend. There is an engraved
glass for first prize. Depending on the volume of entries, there may be up
to 3 of these. For example: First, second and third. Or maybe first in 2
categories, and an honorable mention.
2) one banca is free on Sunday.
3) It is likely that there will be a free banca on Saturday, or space on
boats for a few photographers.
4) all photos should be downloaded into my computer before leaving.
5) TLYC will have the right to use photos, but the photographer will be
given credit. I need photos for magazines and newspapers.
6) TLYC will not sell photos, but it will give this right to
photographers.
7) If there is someone who has a projector, and there are people who take
photos on saturday, we can show these photos on the screen at the saturday
night party.
8) The photographers that come up with good pics, will be invited back
next year, and will recieve vouchers for free bancas and meals.
Peter
