Here's a good list of the pillars of photography. The real icons of the art. This is a cool site, with introductions/biographies as well as a generous sampling of each artist's work.

I think it pays to honor the past and give homage to those who have gone before us - and have made their lasting mark in photographic history.

some of the names on the list:

adams
arbus
avedon
brassai
karsh
kenna
mapplethorpe
steiglitz
weston

No Jallorina?

Oh sorry... those long gone pala haha!

But seriously, thanks! I honestly and shamefully don't know any of them. Even Adams is mostly a question mark for me.

randall, hope this helps introduce our roots to a wider audience. and to put all those titles like "master" and "idol" into perspective.

these names are solid! the real deal.

why am i justifying my thread? hahaha :D

its my try at "im bored and i wanna infect you too with my boredom by starting a thread"

but at least this has a purpose, no?

why am i justifying??? :D

This is a really good thread, Jay, no need to justify. :)

I've to admit, I only know of two names there -- Adams and Kenna -- and that's just about it. Until now, I've not bothered myself looking at the real-deal masters' art, but maybe soon, if and when the Chizmaxx team shuts down the most active thread in Multiply history. LOL! :D

It's about time... to have a thread like this... the term "Master" seems to be just a cent per dozen these days. Those Photography geniuses you mentioned are the cream of the cream of the crop and i agree with Melvin to include masters like Irving Penn and the others who had really contributed to photography. Know who these masters are and learn about their works and be inspired, who knows, you may become like them... a true Master in their own field... someday!

Thank you for starting this thread and sharing the link, Jay!:)

Looking back at these photos of the "real" masters.... You would recognize one thing in common: simplicity.... Simple lighting and simple concept. That's all...

No elaborate lighting schemes, just simple effective lighting. Effective lighting that shows what needs to be shown at the ample amount of light, and not excessive lighting that becomes too technical but really falls short of being spectacular...

Simple concepts. No elaborate backgrounds where the subject doesn't really connect with the viewer. No elaborate costumes that makes the subjects pretentious and stupid... Just a simple concept but very effective.

The only person that I think that is missing in the list are: Madame Yevonde, Man Ray, Munkacsi and Frissell.... Otherwise, I would say the list is quite extensive...

One of the first book i bought about photography is "The Photo Book" by phaidon. Its a compilation of the "Masters", their best work and a brief history of them and their style. Check it out at your favorite bookstore.

Great thread! :)

No Cartier-Bresson or Capa?

hi rolando!

i also wondered about the same thing. perhaps it is because the list here is limited to fine art photographers. cartier-bresson and capa are both giants in the field of photojournalism, which is an entirely different field from fine art photography. just my thoughts :)

Great thread! :)

there was this book sale at the entrance of glorietta 2 some months ago... they were selling tons of phaidon books at ridiculously low prices.

i saw a steve mccurry retrospective. up to this day i beat my head for not getting it that time.

well said sir ricky. the word "master" seems devalued these days. :D
