willy_palacios 05-17-2006, 05:54 PM is there a big difference between a 105mm macro from a 180mm macro which both give you 1:1 magnification?
also if you added an ET (ext. tube) will you get 2:1 or even 3:1 magnifications? thanks
nino_carandang 05-18-2006, 09:49 AM Not much difference in terms of magnification. Difference lies in the actual physical distance of camera from subject.
willy_palacios 05-18-2006, 09:52 AM hehehe so what your paying extra for is the added distance only @ 180mm
Anton Sheker 05-18-2006, 10:04 AM Better to try the 2 lenses out and figure out which one best suits your shooting style and requirements.
There is thin line between needing something and wanting something.. :)
Ben Chan 05-18-2006, 02:52 PM Im not sure if the amount of magnification is affected but nino is right the physical distance between your camera and the subject is affected. another factor which is going to be affected is your depth of field. longer focal lenght means shallower depth of field.

john_villavicencio 05-18-2006, 03:01 PM if you were given the chance to get one of these as a gift, which would you get out of the 3?
Sigma AF 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro 1:1
Sigma AF 150mm f/2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM
Sigma AF 180mm f/3.5 EX IF HSM Macro 1:1
and why?

Sigma AF 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro 1:1
Sigma AF 150mm f/2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM
Sigma AF 180mm f/3.5 EX IF HSM Macro 1:1
and why?
None. I'd get the Canon 100mm F2.8 USM or the Canon 180 F3.5L
john_villavicencio 05-18-2006, 03:55 PM for those who can't afford the canon variants, what would choose? is there such a big difference with the Canon 100mm and the Sigma 105mm?
The L lens is another story... hehehe

in terms of sharpness and color, yes. I've notice that photos taken with the Sigma 105 was kinda yellowish. the canon 100 was definitely sharper.
john_villavicencio 05-18-2006, 05:06 PM thanks for the info nino...
what about those extension tubes... does it matter if it's a kenko or a branded one ?

haven't had any experience with ETs yet. i'll let you know if i get my hands on one.
john_villavicencio 05-18-2006, 05:17 PM thanks nino... much appreciated.
Ben Chan 05-19-2006, 10:13 AM haven't worked with ET's for 35mm. I've only worked with ETs for Hassy's and they do work well gives you a good closeup capability without the use of a macro lens.... pero syempre you'd have to know its limits and work around it well. Just remember that you'll be having a hard time with depth of field the smaller the subject gets. :)

Since walang mirrors ang mga ext. tubes, ok lang kahit na 3rd party brand ang bibilhin mo.
Terence Sysunbin 05-20-2006, 06:28 AM if you were given the chance to get one of these as a gift, which would you get out of the 3?
Sigma AF 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro 1:1
Sigma AF 150mm f/2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM
Sigma AF 180mm f/3.5 EX IF HSM Macro 1:1
and why?
If I had only sigma lenses to choose from I would probably choose the 180mm. The reason behind this is because with alonger focal length you can be farther from your subject, which is very essential if you are taking pictures of insects because the slightest movement can drive them away and besides that the extra focal length will give you extra bokeh.
But if I have enough greens I'll most likely settle for the canon 100mm or the 180mm. I've tried sigma lenses had a couple of them before they're not too bad but you should not expect too much from them. They're at least 30%-50% cheaper than canon lenses therefore you got what you paid for.
Hope this helps Sir John Dude.
Cheers!
willy_palacios 05-20-2006, 10:55 AM is there a way to extend the distance of a Sigma 105mm to get a 1:1 magnification, i think now it's just below 1ft or do i just live it :)
eds_magsayo 06-10-2006, 07:41 AM willy,
what's the meant by magnification factor (ex 1:1 , 1:2 and 1:3) in MACRO?
I heard some people say that Macro photog is another word for Close-up photography
but others say that its not a true macro is its not 1:1 magnification ?????
im confused???

lestercallanta 06-10-2006, 08:37 AM For a Sigma macro lens, would take the Sigma AF 150mm f/2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM. It's actually part of my wishlist. :)
edu_singson 09-08-2006, 08:39 PM Does anyone know where to get an the Kenko extension tubes? I tried a reverse mount adapter in Hidalgo yesterday, but it didn't work with my d70s... I would get the F-- Error.

There's nothing wrong with that, if your Kenko are the chip-less type, then to your camera, there's no lens attached. Search for the reverse macro thread in the Nature section.

you mean, extend the working distance and still get 1:1 magnification?...
cheapest would be TC's, 1.4X may be...
joeyvaldez 05-02-2009, 03:34 PM Sirs,
How about for Nikon SLR's, what macro lens would you recommend?
