Hello

I just bought the 350d kit. i am doing my home-made dry box now with the silica, hygrometer and etc. I will also be getting a bag over the weekend. My question is, what are the basic gears that i need? filters..cleaning materials and etc. Please provide me your preffered brands also...

Thanks!

i have the basic items such as: lens cleaner cloth, air blower (giottos), tripod, pen light and a small camera bag that fits only the dslr.

...depends on what you plan to do. :)

although here are some items you might want to invest in:

A lens pen (for cleaning your lenses). I have the Nikon model, but there are othere ones in the market (I saw a sigma brand that's cheaper, and another brand being sold in Island Photo).
An extra battery (there are generic ones that are good, but if you have budget for an original one, why not?). At least you can pull out an extra one so that you don't have to wait for the next charge.
A filter? I'm not an expert on filters since I mainly use it for protection (had a bad experience taking pictures during dinner... some food landed on my lens. Pretty much ruined my evening and resulted to a trip to the service center the next day). Maybe just a UV filter for starters.
Maybe an extra CF card, since digital photography is quite addicting :) since you get to see your shots right after.
A bag as you mentioned. Tamrac, Lowepro, and Crumplers are very good. Personally I use a Lowepro. There's a cheaper alternative, the Mekko brand... which I heard is good, too.
A blower, so you can blast those dust particles inside (basic cleaning... you can leave the major cleaning to the experts).
A tripod. You can invest in a good one-- Unless really manhandled, this will last you a long timeHappy shooting! :)

Ryan, this post by Raffy pretty much sums it up :) Just remember, get the best quality your money can buy. You can save much in the longrun coz you wouldn't need to double-invest on the same thing just incase something gets broken quick.

A polarizer will do you good if you shoot a lot outdoors. As far as I know, it cuts down glare and makes the color saturation of skies much better.

you may want to get a CF card reader which is already cheap nowadays (around 250 in cdrking).. I find it more convenient and it saves your cam's battery during image transfers.

for long shutter exposures using your tripod, a remote cable release comes in handy.. although this is not much of a necessity at the start since you can still work this around by using the cam's timer to avoid shake when you press the shutter button.

and in case you decided to invest in external flashes later on (which you may probably also want to get), you would need to invest in good rechargeable batteries and charger.

just my 2 cents

a ND (Neutral Density) filter will do this job! :)

I agree with the reco regarding circ polarizers. Very handy and brings out those awesome blues in the sky. I'm now shopping for NDs and grad NDs.

if you happen to find some locally, please do tell us here. hirap maghanap ng mga grad NDs and the set dito...might try buying online...
