Hi,

I just purchased this lens two days ago in Hong Kong - Man Shing in Mongkok.

I bought the last copy. Wing Shing sold the their last unit a day earlier.

I just arrived 3 hours ago and I'm posting sample shots for you guys and girls to have an idea on the 50-135mm's performance.

I always shoot in RAW but for this test, I chose to shoot in JPEG.

Resized for Web and added watermark. No sharpening, levels, or other post-processing done except for 1 or 2 cropping in the images.

All shots taken wide open (f2.8), hand-held, ISO 400 used as the maximum for these images
Some images might not seem to sharp due to slower shutter speed - quick snaps; I was walking constantly during my trip while holding my daughter's bag.
Pentax K10D settings: JPG
Jpeg Settings (in-camera)
Image Tone: Bright
Image Saturation: +1
Image Sharpness: +2
Image Contrast: +1

The box (package) was shot using the DA 21mm f3.2 Limited lens.

Hmmm, about the 50-135mm and the k10D:

1. I like the 3-D look I get with some of the images I took - like the ladies using their laptop.
2. I am a RAW shooter and it was actually my first time to shoot JPEG on this HK trip... Wow, I am amazed at Pentax's ability to produce wonderful colors... plus the 3-D look produced by the 50-135 = POP! POP! POP!
3. Please enlighten me on this... My K10d body tends to underexpose shots by 1/3 to 2/3 EV. The 50-135mm though has a higher underexposure of about 0.7 to 1 stop.

@Rodney...

Check out the Big Pentax EB thread, could be soon although we're waiting for Mark D. to pipe in. Then again, we could have our own EB anyway ... the DA* is the star!

:)

The 3D look is because of the big aperture, I assume that since you were shooting available light that the K10D set your lens at f2.8 or close to it knocking off the DOF. Usually easily achievable with primes (i.e., my 135/2.8) but not with zooms which often has openings of f3.5. So besides the available light performance of the wider aperture is the added bonus of being able to control the DOF.

Yeah...let's shoot you...

Thank you Bong for the enlightenment.

I am looking for a prime which can create the 3D look (increased depth) even at smaller apertures too... I am into landscapes/nightscapes din and I read that the Contax/Yashica mount Zeiss Distagon 21mm f2.8 is one of the best at that... and the medium format cameras... Well, off-topic na yun. :)

Anyway, I have lame/simple in-store (Man Shing Camera shop) shots taken using the DA* 16-50mm too. Although, that was only a demo unit and not for sale daw.

By the way, how much did you get the 50-135?

I'm still hoping to lay my hands on a DA* 16-50/2.8 and 60-250/4 combo in the future. :D

Congrats on your purchase Rodney! Here's my take on the "3D" look. For me, achieving 3D involves more than a sharp subject and nice bokeh. I can easily get that with the FA 50mm but I wouldn't call it 3D because I couldn't really replicate the image with my own two eyes. For 3D, you have to get the sharpness of the subject just right and the also the relative blurriness of the surrounding and background objects correct. When it looks like you can touch your subject or you're looking through a glass window at your subject, then you have achieved the 3D look.

Can't wait for our next Pentax EB!:):)

It's on stock at Wingshing when i went there last Aug 12. I wonder why you get a higher price in ManShing since both stores have same owner.
