i got more interested in using a strobe setup after the photoshoot earlier in Ad Photo. Since i'm on a tight budget, I'm thinking if it's possible to use my SB800 as my main light? What is the maximum size of Softbox I could use? I was hoping I could use like the one we used in Ad Photo (i'm just not sure what's the size of it). And where I can buy the stand and Soft Box for the SB800. Thanks!

i have a 24x32"softbox..i use a cheapo tripod (i got with my video cam for free) and a clamp to hold.. aperture trading would be a nice start.. also, try scouting the stores in hidalgo..

yes the sb600 will work... but you will have fewer options to trigger the sb600 off-camera than with any other nikon flash. The problem is the sb600 doesnt have a PC sync port. so u cant simply use a pocket wizard or other radio/infrared wireless triggers. you will need adapters that will connect the trigger to the hot shoe of the flash.

of course the potentially cheaper option is the free wireless iTTL system of your sb600/sb800 aka CLS. but you will need either a D70/s,D80,D200, D300 or another SB800.

if you dont have a flash yet and you plan to just use flashes as strobes, then ur best bet really is to buy old speedlights... SB28, SB24, SB26, etc... or cheap 3rd party flashes (like vivitars) which will be a lot better for this purpose than an sb-600 (since they have everything you need for it to work as strobes... manual function, pc sync ports, etc...

how do you mount the flash with the softbox? do you use a special adapter? what do you use to trigger the sb800? RF? Cactus? Infrared?
Sorry, I have a lot of questions. I am sure there are those who has these questions also.

Yeah I've actually had the same idea to use the portable flashes instead of buying expensive strobes, since I have an sb28 and an sb800.

I was also thinking in the meantime you can just rig umbrellas on the flash and hook it up to a tripod/stand instead.
