I took a few shots of our bathroom at home and im quite disappointed with the results. The lights inside the bathroom are warm white and the pictures turned out yellowish. Tried changing the white balance to auto. Same results. What can I do to improve these pictures? Help

Custom white balance. One thing you could do, if your camera allows you to measure white balance, is use 2 pieces of white coffee filter and use that as basis for setting WB. With the D70s, you can record a WB by selecting PRE and holding down the WB button and taking a shot of the coffee filter, after that, take shots of the interior na. :) Hope this helps.

I dont know how the custom white balance works for Canon, but im sure a similar option is available :) The Coffee filters is a cheap yet extremely effective alternative to White balance cards :)

It would be yellowish if you werent using flash on a low light. Try using flash that should help.

I still think you can achieve a good shot without the need for flash. Let me know if custom WB helps.

I tried bouncing off the flash on one of the walls. I really dont like the effect. I wanna use the ambient lighting. I'll try using the custom white balance tip. Thanks sonny.

No problem Bryant. Let me know what it looks like :)
I think there's an offer online for a whole set of White balance cards, I'll link you to the page via PM. WB cards are a good investment if you do lots of indoor shots for publications. :)

Whoops, here's something you can try and you wouldnt really need to reshoot.
If you shot in RAW, you could pick a neutral gray or white point from the image and photoshop does the work for you :)

Trying setting your color temperature to arround 2000 - 3000K, by estimates tungsten lamps are around 2000K and house hold bulbs are at 2500K. Also try using a longer exposure around 2 seconds.

I would suggest you shoot RAW and adjust your white balance via software.

Beautiful! The colors look more natural now! I would advise that you use a tripod and maybe a longer exposure you we get to see the details of the interior of the bathroom! Cheers! :)

Yup totally agree shoot in RAW and play around with what best suites your white balance taste.. but again nothing beats capturing it right the first time...

here is a little test i did with the white expodisc.. some people like it with, some like it without...

I've been thinking about picking up a small WB kit. After reading the review of the expodisc, it looks like this is the professionals choice. The price seems to be towards the professional end too, are there any cheaper alternatives to this Anton?

Some people say that using a pringles cover should do the same.. i think it may not work for all situations because the expodisc comes with a calibration certificate with each unit. I think we should do this test once and for all... hehehe

a cheaper easier way would use the custom white balance and your white hanky or white table cloth.. :)

Hmmm. This makes me want to conduct a test. So far I've gotten by with coffee filters. I'll get to work after finals I guess and post my findings here :D (Pringles cover!? who would've thought? haha)

Well there's always Photoshop Bryant.

Ok here's what you do...

-Open file in photoshop
-Click Command-J to duplicate layer (I'm assuming youre using mac since thats what you used in class before)
-On the duped layer, go to Filter/Blur/Average Blur.
-Then type Command-I to inverse
-Go to your layers blending mode drop-down box (you know, soft light, overlay, multiply, screen ETC) and select "color"
-Then slide the opacity bar to about 30% or depending on your taste

Thats a very useful and simple color correcting trick that might work easy...

Will be in manila tomorrow for therapy for my back and carlo and i plan to shoot stuff in the afternoon and evening...you can come with man!

BTW, nice bathroom...nice composition... :-)

Another option, if you canon users can tweak your white balance is to use auto and +3 if its too yellow and -3 if its too blue

Cheers,

G.
