View Full Version : Photographer do it sideways...
Tok Paler 08-13-2007, 12:00 AM *Photographers do it sideways...*
Yes.. Drifting!
The smell of burnt rubber, the sound of the blow off valve, engines struggling to keep up with the demanding driver and the spine-chilling squeel when rubber loses traction of the pavement!
We've all seen it in movies and the internet! The sport that has been popularized by the Japanese and now, it invades Philippines devastating all notions of racing around the track. The objective here is to get you car sideways, produce as much smoke as you can (using the tires) and get the loudest applause from the cheering crowds! The only way to be in control is to lose control (*fade to tokyo drift soundtrack*) =b
Big thanks to Winston Baltazar for inviting us for this shoot! =)

Hahahaha! true enough!
The track manager briefed us on how to go about shooting the cars..
"Keep your eyes on the cars! don't turn your back on them, always know where THEY are! Sidestep, backstep etc.." and on top of that, the car is literally inches away from our lenses with our eyes stuck to the VF! Ibang klase!! Haaaay...

Coming Aly. Just got off work. Checking out the whole thread before I post my photos. Nino, Tok, thanks for coming over since this was biglaan (last minute). I had to stay until the end (around 6pm) because I was parked beside the Motul tent and the latecomers parked all around me.
The bonus was that Nancy Castiglione came to award the prices. Abangan.... (momentito gaaaani.)

Winston Baltasar 08-13-2007, 10:24 PM This set is blurred and filled with the smoke of burning rubber and dust of splattering asphalt, but the photos are exciting nonetheless, IMHO. They show the severity of the competition and if you think about it, the danger the photographers on the track were exposed to, especially when it came down to the final four competitors.
I know I could have improved them by cropping but it's been a long day. :)

Martin Rosadia 08-13-2007, 10:45 PM Wow guys great set. Looks like you really had fun up close.
Nino and Tok,
You guys are getting really good with those shots.:)
Winston,
You were not kidding when you told me that this was going to be panning galore. Would have taken you up on the invite but my visa does not allow me to shoot Sundays (lol):(

Martin,
I don't even see my passport on Sundays lest a visa!:Scared:
Winston,
Thank you for obliging my request. But I thought you said there were A LOT OF UMBRELLA GIRLS?:RedEye:
Winston Baltasar 08-13-2007, 10:53 PM This guy came even closer to the barrier, nudging it when he spun, if I remember right. Note his rear wheel is still spinning.
Another car hit the barrier which landed on my foot. That shot I was not able to capture as I was more worried about my foot. :)

Winston Baltasar 08-13-2007, 10:57 PM Martin,
Fortunately, I have a very understanding commander. HAHAHA!
Aly,
Momentito, por favor. Uploading one or two more for you. I did say, during our dinner, that Pia just texted that there were only two umbrella girls. But sometimes you hear what you want to hear.
Just kidding, amigo. Cars first, then girls, ok? I know, my priorities are skewed. :)

Thanks, JP, Tet. I used to be a motoring journalist but my present banking day job (plus Kinabuhayan Cafe) do not give me much free time. It was either the Drifting Championship or the PIMotorshow on the weekend. Commander is very understanding since I am very under-di-saya. (sorry, very difficult to translate.)

Winston Baltasar 08-13-2007, 11:22 PM Excuse the side stories but I'm a writer more than a photographer. As I was having lunch around 3pm at Inggo's behind the Drifting venue, I noticed that the umbrella girls were there, too. So I asked if I could take their shots. One said her specialty is smiling and the other one said her specialty is pouting.

Was this the one with the silvia engine?!
Alan Sevilla 08-14-2007, 11:02 PM True that Kai, I remember there were 2 close calls when we were shooting. It was scary coz I wanted to get a really close shot since I only had a 28-70 so I positioned myself w/ my arm and camera on the edge of the foam. Good thing the marshall warned me and after I left my position Jason C's car touched the exact same spot where I was positioned. It was a wake up call so decided to give an allowance hehe got soo paranoid. PRetty freaky coz once u get into it you just don think abt the dangers.
@tok
wasnt able to see the engine :(

kaihuang 08-14-2007, 11:38 PM ya alan.. even the best driver can make mistakes and many times the suspension parts will break and boom! na sa harap mo na yun oto.
i had several close calls to stay away from situations like those.. i've done open door of a speeding car, on top of a van doing 50-60kph.. even putting myself out from sunroof when the car is doing 180kph.
it doesnt matter kung race track or private road. delikado talaga pag moving vehicles :)

Tok Paler 08-15-2007, 04:34 PM Have a question lang...with scenes like these is it better to stick with one shutter speed setting or switch to shutter priority mode? thanks so much! :)
Hey Allen,
I usually experiment with the shutter speed to match how fast the car is going.. =)
It could vary from 1/100sec to 1/40 as what Nino's been doing. In my case is used shutter priority to switch between 1/60 and 1/80, compensated my exposure to preserve my highlights.. =) I was also using a 3-stop GND.
The distance of the car in relation to your position and focal length can greatly affect the blur. Usually, the nearer the car and the longer focal length produces the most blur compared to a wide angle with the car close to you.
Hope that helps! =)

SUNNY P. SANTOS 09-07-2007, 02:47 PM Please note that I'm a 50 year old guy with shaky hands. So if I can do these panning shots, anyone can. :)
Of course, at this point, only 10% of my panning shots are sharp. I think Nino and Tok are around 90%.
Having said that it's good to have a bit of blur on the car sometimes...
The following photos were taken using AI Servo.
