...wherein I have no film camera but practice IR instead, Paeng has the world's only "digital" K1000 (according to Joey's flash), and Maureen brought her MZ with all-star cast of batteries (but ends up shooting digital half of the time).:D:D

Anyway, a repost of our group pic in IR (again appologies for the OOF - still learning IR focus adjustments):

I have a loooong way to go in getting better at IR shooting. Still haven't figured out how to reduce the noise in my IR shots (I believe have to start using my viewfinder cap).

Hey! I like the last shot where the butterfly is flying away. My bias, I'm more of a story teller (photojournalist) rather than a naturalist or a macro person. Which is why James composes his butterfly shots to give space for a story to be weaved. A straight macro shot--for me--feels like an ID photo.

There were 4 variants of this shot with different tires in focus, they were shot at f4 to kill the DOF so that only one wheel would be clear. Each variant had a different wheel as the emphasis. I like this one the best.

(Sigh) Ah well, re the IR, there was a lot more intent than substance there. There was a slight shower early morning when we we were still in UP so I couldn't shoot a lot. In Quezon Circle, we were walking around so much I managed only a few IR shots (which were not really good since I'm still learning the IR ropes so to speak). I actually ended up with a lot more colored shots.

Nols,

Compose your shot, set your custom focus point, then attach the IR filter and refocus with the IR filter on, believe it or not, the camera can actually focus with only IR light. There is a big focus shift when you attach the IR filter which makes prefocusing futile. Or else, use the hyperfocal of your lens' focal length.

@Larry...all the B&Ws I've posted are film shots: MX + SMCP xx/xx + TX400 (as in Kodak Tri-X 400)...and if you're counting, there's 16 of them, out of 36 shots.

DS + Tamron 75-300 (?)

I noticed that Mau's Tamrons does not register in the EXIF file even if mistaken or misrepresented as a Pentax lens; my x-Sigma (now Franz's) 55-200 registers in the EXIF as an SMCP F 35-105 but all I get with Mau's lens is "..."

With the kit lens, I'm experiencing misfocus at f/8 (focus to infinity) even if I get focus lock(with filter on) before the shoot. I'm now experimenting on smaller apertures (i.e f/13 and less). Have you tried IR with the kit lens Randall? I really want to use the DA21mm but I still have to find a step-down(?) ring for my 52mm filter.:(

I'm doing IR only with the DA18-55 and the DA50-200 :)

Do not focus to infinity. Just zoom in, focus with the filter on and zoom back out. The DA18-55 and 50-200 is parfocal. :)

@Nols...we posted more shots here than in our previous road trip. I still have 4 or so shots I haven't posted and Mau still has not posted any of her shots (she hasn't used up her film and the K10D shots are with Joey...).

Well, you have to admit - even if the scenery/location is commonplace, there are definitely a lot more subjects to shoot in UP/Quezon Circle than in Pandin (especially at 4am in the morning). I hope our planned trip to Taal pans out (after thge rains).:)

Thank you sir Larry, Yup all the pics i posted are taken from sir joey's k10d! My B&W is not yet developed.

By the way, where's the best place where i can have the B&W developed? Somewhere near here in manila?

Thanks

Hunt in Hidalgo! One hour photo labs no longer handle B&Ws. I think Island would accept it but promptly bring it to another lab somewhere. We can develop it on Saturday, we have an EB/shoot with Paeng this Sat. PM or YM me.

Mau, were you shooting in RAW or in Jpeg? I find that the K10's default contrast setting a bit too harsh so I have mine set on a permanent -2 setting. BTW, this is nice and sharp (take note to remember lens setting). Joey, what do you think?

So when's the next film fest? I'll be getting my ME Super back this week and at the same time hand over my K100D for repairs... I will be going to Samar on the 7th of September and it's most likely that I will be using my film camera by then. I need to practice! And I will also be doing all my band's photoshoots from now on, so I really really need to master film!

noli,

mau was shooting jpeg.

re contrast, i guess its a matter of taste (or maybe i really need a new pair of glasses). i set mine on the plus side. then there's also natural mode vs bright mode. that may affect things a bit. are you going to ecopark this saturday?

I guess you're right. I have gotten used to contrast adjustments on the pc (bigger screen - eyes just not good enough to judge camera lcd pic) so I just set the contrast to neg to get as much DR as possible (RAW). Am actuially thinking of going on Monday morning.

The bike shot above is my favorite among your bike shots. The shallow DOF puts emphasis on the first bike but the composition still gives a sense of symmetry in the row of bicycles. Nice!
