Hi Nilam

Welcome to DPP!

One guy in particular is Doc Mark.
check out his gallery here in DPP http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/photography/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=1789

you might find some threads here that he posted about surfing. like these two:

As far as I know, he has all the DA prime limiteds, and a few of the FA's and an FA*.

For the faraway shots from the beach to the waves, he uses the F* 600mm f/4 if I'm not mistaken. He seems to be using the the DA10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 Fish-eye with a custom SPL case for the K10D while in the water shooting upclose.

He's also using the newly released DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 for his action and walkabout shots on the beach.

Doc Mark, correct me if I'm wrong. :D

hi nilam,

glad to see that you are interested in surfing photography. it is truly a joy. for all my long reach shots i use a pentax FA* 600mm f4. however, before that i used a Tokina ATX SD AF 400 f5.6, that lens is hard to beat when it comes to price and performance. i have seen a few new in box at wilson's shop AVE. Photo in Hidalgo.

the minimum you will need for surf photography is 400mm prime. I shoot mostly with primes these days because they yield the best clarity. however, after saying that I love fast zooms namely the DA* fast f2.8 telezooms.

If your budget is tight you need at least 300mm and the speed isnt that much of an issue because surf photography can be shot stopped down several stops from wide open because the subject is so displaced from your vantage point.

the real gem of surf photography is shooting from the water. if you can afford housing for your slr that is a bug plus, but there is one option. pentax makes the optio w30, which is an underwater, waterproof point and shoot, which just so happens to be the official camera of 8X ASP world champion surfer Kelly Slater. here is a link, and i know they sell these locally in manila.

I will be in manila by the end of the month, for a magazine photo trip with a few hawaiian pro surfers. Also, if you want to meet up when we have our pentax EB please join us, we would love to have you along.

message me and we can talk more about it later.

cheers!

I'd go but three things are making me think twice.

1. I live more than 400km away
2. Typhoon Megi just hit that part of the Philippines hard
3. It's All Saints/Souls and Halloween. I could imagine how bad the traffic would be.

Wish I went to 6th Odyssey Waves Surfing Competition held in Eastern Samar last month.

I'll be there on Saturday (30th). I can meet you there if you're going.

I also overheard that hotels are fully booked. However, with Typhoon Megi's effects, I guess most reservations will be cancelled.
