View Full Version : Infra Red
tj_parpan 08-20-2006, 09:31 AM Infra Red digital captures can be fun. It gives you another way of looking at the landscape around you, through IR eyes. The following sites have a lot of helpful tips on taking IR shots, specifically with a D70 and a Hoya R72 filter.
http://www.nature-photography-central.com/Digital_Infrared_Photography_with_the_Nikon_D70.ht ml
http://www.rtfract.com/d70infrared.htm
http://www.naturfotograf.com/D70_rev05IR.html
Here's a sequence of images taken following the directions taken from the first link.
1. Take a preset WB setting by shooting of a patch of sunlit grass. Take the shot, and this is what the usual image looks like:
http://www.photo.net.ph/albums/userpics/10179/_DSC7656_1orig.jpg
2. In PS, apply auto-levels.
http://www.photo.net.ph/albums/userpics/10179/_DSC7656_2autolevels.jpg
3. In PS, you can also do a "false-color" rendering by swapping the red and blue channels.
http://www.photo.net.ph/albums/userpics/10179/_DSC7656_3channelswap.jpg
4. You can also convert it to B&W to give it a more "traditional" IR look.
http://www.photo.net.ph/albums/userpics/10179/_DSC7656_4bw.jpg
In the end, you can just have fun with your IR shots and just adjust them anyway you wish.

Yes... it was creepy that both out groups were taking IR photos yesterday.
We were somewhere near Biñan, Laguna. I don't know exactly coz I was just following the car ahead of me.

I just stumbled across something. Since I dont have the R72 yet (Din let me know by monday how much for a 67mm R72 and a 52mm HMC) I got my ghetto Sony DSC-V3 and have discovered that the Nightshot mode can do IR. Now if you're wondering what I used to filter light out... simple. I use a 3.5" floppy disk. No kidding, this thing works like an IR filter. Will test it tormorrow! :D
tj_parpan 08-20-2006, 09:33 PM Flickr's got a good gallery as well:

Gotta experiment with my F828. :) Thanks for the tip.
Sonny Thakur 08-20-2006, 11:05 PM @Earl,
As soon as you get somethin going, let me know hehe. For now, I've done my research and the V3 produces a lot of noise with IR photos. Almost looks like film :P

No problem Sonny. I'll let you know as soon as I can get consistent results :)
Sonny Thakur 08-21-2006, 03:41 PM I didnt really get to go out to try anything today. However... I got curious and just took a shot from my parents room hehe. Here's what I have. Take note that I used a floppy disk as my filter... This should look sexier with the Hoya R72. Noise was all natural.

Nice image Sonny... Considering the filter used... I'm just curious how you actually used the floppy... Diba after disassembling the thing there's a hole in the middle? How many floppies did you use ba? :)
Sonny Thakur 08-21-2006, 04:27 PM Hey Earl,
I shouldve taken the time to actually look for a better subject to shoot hehe.
As for the Floppy, you just basically stick the black part over the lens. The Sony DSC-V3 has a small CZ lens and all I needed to do was hold the floppy up against the lens. (make sure it's flat, i tried some other shots with it bent or crumpled and i noticed flares, and orbs.) Im still experimenting with multiple layers of floppy, ill let you know what I come up with. cheers :)

Sonny Thakur 08-21-2006, 05:28 PM @Carlo,
thanks dude! I've just been hit with glass lust, but a friend of mine suggested I work with what I have for now and concentrate more on improving my technique. I have a long wishlist and I cant wait to go through some better equipment. Haha Mcgyver :P You can call me that when I figure how to make explosives with just a cassette recorder hehe.

I can relate to that... Lens-lust can be a difficult disease to cure... But you know, once you realize your style of shooting and the focal lengths that you usually play with... Miraculously, the lust somehow attenuates/decreases... Plus if you think about the cash issues... It's really easy to get by it. Just don't stick near people who has your dream glass kasi it's a vicious cycle. :D

I see your IR images have a hotspot in the middle.
What gear are you using if I may ask? It's because it's been reported that some combinations of gear can produce the hotspot.
Pilar Tuason 09-08-2006, 02:03 AM Some lenses are not good for infrared and do cause the hotspot. Try a different lens and see if there is a change.

Giovanni de la Cruz 09-09-2006, 01:16 AM awesome. i heard that with a filter, you have to expose the image longer. how long did you expose these images, if I may ask?
Parc_Cruz 09-09-2006, 01:20 AM On a 350d - 10 Secs is enough to get that image. On a 30D around 20 to 30 Secs.
I've also tried a Nikon D70s around 1 to 2 secs only.
PARC
dave_deluria 09-09-2006, 01:22 AM 30 seconds on a 30D
We took these at around 10:30am with the sun beating down on us.
The Nikon only took less than 5 seconds to achieve the same exposure.
Giovanni de la Cruz 09-09-2006, 01:29 AM thanks for the info. i'd like to try ir photos but man that r72 costs an arm and a leg.

Analynne_Sison 10-10-2006, 11:29 PM Hello,
I'm kinda new to photography and i'm confused with all the different IR filters. Can someone help me? What's the difference between all these numbers (89B vs 87C)? I'll be using this with a non-converted 350D. Thanks guys!
Earl Gonzalez 10-11-2006, 12:32 AM Hello,

The IR glass grade is different: 092 = 89B and 093 = 87C. While both of these filters are of course smashing for IR, the 87C is more geared towards forensic or scientific applications because it blocks the whole visible spectrum. While the 89B blocks visible light up to 650 nm.
HTH :)
Analynne_Sison 10-11-2006, 01:48 AM ok thanks. i think i'll go with the 89B then. I can always photoshop out the colours :)
