Hello DPP Readers,

It is my pleasure to announce the second installment of DPP ON ASSIGNMENT courtesy of Sony Ericsson and Seair. This challenge may be a little tougher than the first group that went On Assignment to Boracay.

Your mission:

1) Fly to CORON - BUSUANGA
2) Dates: Sunday, August 26 to Wednesday, August 29
3) Assignment:

a) Photograph the town fiesta of Coron
b) Island hopping and photograph seascapes and beaches
c) Take a three hour rough drive to Calauit and photograph the Wildlife Reserve (Giraffes, Bearcats, etc). Also photograph Ranches.
d) Photograph the Limestone Cliffs
e) If you got what it takes, and also got the gear, go diving and photograph an underwater wreck

Who gets to go? DPP Readers. We will be asking Readers in this Forum to tell us why you want to go on this trip. Tell us what you plan to do, how you plan to shoot, and really why DPP should select you.

DPP will be pre-selecting One or possibly Two Team Leaders for this trip. This means we may choose Three or Four members from this Forum to go on the trip.

Please take notice of the dates for this trip. The trip is on a weekday so for those of you who work, you will have to file for a leave, or call in sick--but there will be evidence that you were somewhere else. :) Only put your name on this list if you are 100% certain you can make the dates. Because if we choose you and you suddenly back out, the On Assignment will be compromised.

This will be a very demanding trip so if you don't think you can handle it physically, don't list yourself.

This thread will only be open until AUGUST 8.

Ok DPP, tell us what you're made of.

Wow, a real life safari with all the Giraffes and other wild life. I can imagine this group will have captures beyond their wildest dreams and an experience that will be told from generations on. Truly a photo adventure of a lifetime.

Unfortunately, I'm not available on said dates. So good luck to all DDP members who are qualified to join the assignment.

wow, a real photo safari in the truest sense of the word.

i'd love to be considered for the team. observing, photographing and living in the outdoors come second nature to me. physically, i believe i'm up to the task since i love to hike and more importantly, wander. i write for a living and take pictures as a complement so if there's room for someone to document the adventure in images and words, i'd like to be the one to do it. but enough of talk, i'd rather present an evidence to build my case :) - pls. feel free to visit my photoblog http://www.oggieblog.blogspot.com

I've heard good things about Palawan and always wanted to go there to experience nature. Unfortunately I couldn't find anyone to go with me. From what I know of Coron it is one of the final frontiers of Philippines and has a very wide assortment of flora and fauna both native and imported from around the world.

Given the chance I'd use my ever trusty K800i's 3.2MP camera to take pictures of the physical features of the places I will visit and the animals I would get close too. These things cannot be found in the concrete jungle of Metro Manila so a sturdy camera would come in really handy to take these spur of the moment candid shots. I would then MMS or email them straight out from my phone so maybe in the future it would encourage others to go with me. Finally I'd keep the best shots on my phone for later display on the large & clear built-in screenmaking it a great picture album to share with others what I've seen.

For extra measure I would also take photos with my DSLR gear for shots that require it.

I think DPP should select me because I love photography and photography loves me. :) But seriously I think DPP should select me because I am very flexible and I'm a bit of a cowboy when it comes to the outdoors.

Aug 27 (Monday) is a holiday, so I'll just be absent on Tue and Wed. It's going to be a very busy two days at work but I'll tell my boss to go kiss my ass! I'll tell my wife that we'll be on temporary divorce for 4 days and I'll tell my kids they'll be daddy-less too as I'll be missing Family Day.

I'm going to give up 4 days of my very important family life for Sea Air, Sony Ericsson, and Palawan.

What the fuck for?

To prove that Sea Air flies as reliably as the big boys. To prove that Sony Ericsson's user interface can be better than Nokia's. And of course, to capture the wild beauty of Palawan - our country's "Last Frontier."

Oh yes, and I dive.

Thanks to the management/body of this much anticipated event...

As Nature Lover, Over d years I've become a traveller/explorer a mountainer and ryt now a joyfull/proud photographer, and travel and landscape as my field,
form the past i used to used a phone camera in taking picture as my souvenir, not mentioning until now i used a prosumer camera as my medium.

When I was distant places I always feel the breeze, enjoy the moment, the awesome God created for us such as landscapes and creatures..

How I plan to shoot? to capture the undiscovered/unawake beauty of Coron Palawan by nature in diff view perspective..to share and feel embracing it.

As and I hope being part of the 2nd On assignment team, d challenge will be given by the committee, I will simply love it with all of my heart, dedicate it to whom inspired me *_* and love for photography. I'am willing to file a leave for this great event dat will test my ability to meet and do the job..

As my qoute will be like this - 'My mentor and bridge will be DPP , My carrier is Seair , My weapon and gear will be sony ericson'..

And also to prove that I can deliver great quality picture, memories and camaraderie to my fellow photographer's and directors.

Thanks for the oppurtunity and more power to us and DPP..

this would have been an excellent opportunity for me:
- nature photography is my first love,
- i have patience like no other when in comes to living macros,
- i'm a certified sun-chaser (hehe-- nothing tho compared to JayJ,
- travel is my cup of tea and travel photography is my motivation,
- had my honeymoon in Palawan
- shot similar safaris in Singapore and Thailand
- im a PADI diver with underwater point and shoot cam.

my only problem: pastors shouldn't miss church Sunday service in exchange to photography :)
so, let the other guys have it.

God bless the qualifiers!

first of all, i never been to palawan. i always dream of going there. if dpp & sony ericsson will allow me to join the team then it will be a dream come true.

second, i am a novice. i am not ashamed of admitting that i am novice. i can be good ingredient or mix to the team that include master photographers and the likes. i can learn from them and hopefully they can learn from me too. i am a student that accepts everything just to learn things that i love.

third, i am physically and mentally fit for the assignment. i am an outdoors man / adventurer. i am camper since elementary and a mountaineer since college. i love the outdoor, to travel, the culture of the place and its people. i can also share my passion of being an outdoors man to the team of assignment #2.

fourth, i will test my gear dslr, prosumer and a cellphone cam to its capabilities and limitations. nikon d70 with 18-70mm (main cam), canon s3is (for zoom and super macro) and a sony ericsson camphone (for quick snapshots).

fifth, this an oppurtunity to have more friends here in dpp.

and last but not the least, this will be a challenge for me. this is my time so shine as a budding photo enthusiast. you know why? i always wanted to have a job that is really my passion. i envy people earning and doing what they love most. i hope photography will be it for me in the future.

oh boy, If only I have the moolah to visit the Philippines best islands then I will definitely be flying every week. unfortunately, my current state doesn't allow me so keeping me at bay.

i've noticed that my eyes work wonders whenever I shoot festivals. lots of subjects, good colors and the ambience of the celebration.. (breathes), i can feel it now.

shooting wildlife is not an easy task, but i have been dreaming of becoming a nat geo photog, maybe during the task, just for once, i could feel how it's like shooting in the wild.

i'm only a p&s shooter and haven't bought my first dslr yet. but for me what's important is being keen on details, how your mind work and what you can do to capture a fine moment. high-end gear is not necessary to accomplish that all.

same goes with using a sony ericsson cam. as long as a device can take pictures. wonders can be produced the eyes of a photographer.

im willing to take a leave from work, sacrifice a few dates and sexytimes just to be with the dpp team for 4 days. that would be fun!

Hello DPP Readers,

It is my pleasure to announce the second installment of DPP ON ASSIGNMENT courtesy of Sony Ericsson and Seair. This challenge may be a little tougher than the first group that went On Assignment to Boracay.

Ok DPP, tell us what you're made of.

You might need a doctor for this trip!.... just in case:Grin:

- I'm available on the said period. Locked & Loaded.

- I joined the Boracay ON ASSIGNMENT but was not selected. I'm more than ready for this much tougher assignment, screaming & kicking.

- An eye from Cebu can bring surprising outputs for DPP, Sony Ericsson, & Seair. There is no "I" in TEAMWORK.

Go, go, go!!!

Congratulations in advance to the chosen few!!!

Given that id be chosen for this assignment, i would truly be grateful... and expect the best from me.

my problem is im not "made of" much... for starters i generally have a fear of flying and cant imagine riding a small aircraft. moreover, if youll require the photogs to run and hike all over the place for the entire day in full battle gear then id probably be in need of serious medical attention after the 1st day .......otherwise it sounds great :)

so why should you choose me? (humility intact but aside)
- i own use a SE k800i and can shoot with that quite well
- im quite a versatile shooter (i can shoot very well and very poorly ) which may prove important to an assignment with multiple shooting settings.
- i can (or may) add fresh perspective/ variety to your pool of talented photogs. im sure the last thing you want are 1000 photographs that are all good but almost cant tell apart.
- i love shooting something i havent shot in the past. thats why travel photography is so appealing to me because of the opportunity to shoot new environments, peoples and cultures.
- im largely in between jobs/ businesses now :D

* another problem is im shifting back to nikon so there will definitely be a longer setup time for me for the various shooting settings of the assignment...

ricky_ladia
08-03-2007, 03:29 PM
hmmm... why would i want to go to Coron on a Sea Air Plane and shoot with a SE camphone???

- i haven't really shoot landscape nor festival in a long time
- i tend to "overeat" and not shoot when i'm in an island like this
- haven't been to Palawan, so i don't know what to expect
- I want to dive but i don't know how and i don't have an underwater camera
- Just had a three day trip in Iloilo so my wife might not approve of this
- I'm a Nokia user
- Except some know-how in photography, and SLR's at hand.. i have nothing else to offer:)
...so it is pure luck if i will be chosen to go on this assignment,
unless they need an old bastard that don't always go by the rules:D

a) Photograph the town fiesta of Coron
b) Island hopping and photograph seascapes and beaches
c) Take a three hour rough drive to Calauit and photograph the Wildlife

d) Photograph the Limestone Cliffs

3) Be friendly with fellow DPP master lensman/photographer hehe >> im sure the one will be chosen here is a certified master photographer or something to the highest level

4) i have no previous experience or whatsoever knowledge in travelling in Palawan but in Boracay, i have & was there every year

This is a sample itinerary for the DPP Coron trip, the schedule is jam-packed with activities. Not only do you need to be in top physical shape to be able to do perform these tasks but you need to have lots of creative juices to bring with you, but I know I am up to this challenge. (I am physically fit and likes to hike/climb/swim/snorkel and of course, I love landscapes/seascapes, night photography, outdoor portraits, underwater photography, animal portraits and shooting events) and I also had a dream I was chosen for this trip:)

Day 1: Sunday, August 26

7:10am-8:20am - Flight to Busuanga (Sea Air has 2 flights from Manila to Busuanga every Sunday (7:10am/3:10pm), I hope they book us on the earlier flight)
9am-10am - Reach Hotel, get familiar with the area: places to eat, hike, shoot, get to know some locals as guide, etc.

Did you fail marketing in college?!? :D

You know that "cross-posting" sometimes brings out the unexpected in people in different industries or positions. Cross functional deployment forces one to look at things under a different "light".

Yes, Ricky buddy boy, you might get lucky as others in the corporate world have been!!!

Hi Glenn,

Finally, I had the chance to get online on DPP again (although i get thread updates everyday). Good thing I clicked on this thread. I hope hope you can make it to the team. Your planned itinerary is super-filled with activities -- mouth watering!!! That got me excited to sign up and hope to be chosen (I'll be expressing my interest in my next post).

My only comment refers to the dive event in your itinerary. Schedule it no later than noon of Day 3. Different diver certification agencies (e.g., PADI, NAUI, SSI, BSAC, etc) require that, after a dive, one would need to stay up to 24 hours on land (above water, also called surface interval) prior to any flight out. Many even say, the longer the surface interval, the better. This is to help reduce the nitrogen accumulated during a dive. In short: to avoid decompression sickness.

I really hope you make it to the team!!!

Hi to all! I'm a DPP avid reader, even when I'm traveling to other countries I make sure to get their local issues and never missed one... because I really learned a lot from DPP.

I know there's a lot of well deserving members to be part of the team (On Assignment) but if God's willing I would like to be considered also. I love photography and really dead serious about it, so I took several formal workshops and training to develop and enhance my photography skills or knowledge. Physically I'm really fit for the task as I love sports (especially golf and mountain climbing), I'm a good cook (so I can be a kusinero for the team too), an Advance & Rescue PADI divers for almost 5 years now, I have a very flexible schedules that fits the events. Also I have my diving gears (with spare one just incase), DSLRs and lots and lots of humor and prayers!

Congratulations to all and God bless you always!

Please consider me for On Assignment Part 2.
Here’s why:

1)Desire. I really, really want this project. Palawan is at the top of my travel list. Unfortunately, I haven’t been there yet. That’s why I’m rarin’ to show the beauty of Palawan thru photos, and I hope the On Assignment will help me realize this dream. If chosen, will definitely spend lots of time researching to be more knowledgeable about the places/culture/people.

2)Devotion. I’m fit and healthy and I can shoot all day. Dawn and dusk are my favorite times to shoot. I like to wander around to get different points of view. I’m used to 10-12hr drives, so a 3-hr rough ride should be fine. I will file for a vacation leave from work during this period. Bottomline, I’ll give my best.

3)How do I plan to shoot? Overall, I’ll follow the leader’s decisions since he knows what’s best. Since I’m more of a landscape shooter, I have to inform him of my plan, that way he can have an idea on what I’m trying to produce.

For the seascapes, I’ll do lowlight/long exposure shots during dawn and dusk. Day activities will be more on shooting the clear waters of the lake and lagoons and the rugged limestone cliffs. Will shoot fishermen work and children frolicking, too.

For the fiesta, focus will be on capturing the colors and emotions/expressions of the people. Will target people with character as subjects. This will definitely include a lot of running here and there to record the festivities.

In Calauit, I’ll shoot the animals especially during early morning and afternoon since they are more active during these times (hope the itinerary will include an overnight stay in Calauit). And I trust a 70-200mm will be enough to capture the wildlife. I read that Calauit is a biker’s paradise, so if bikes are available, I’ll make use of it to wander around the place more. The only actual experience I have is shooting animals in zoos, but I have DPP issue # 02 as reference for shooting the wilds J And I love the country life…would really love spend some time in a ranch/cabin.

Underwater photography? I’ll leave this for the leader(s). J

4)Hope you can find some interesting photos to back up my wish: http://acrondue.multiply.com/

5)Finally, it would be an honor to work with fellow DPPers and learn from seasoned photographers. And the opportunity to experience Seair and Sony Ericsson is there for the taking.

Good luck to all!
Tks!

Dear Nick and fellow DPPers,

“ON ASSIGNMENT Part 2” is definitely an opportunity I would like you to consider letting me in on. For a while there, I held off expressing my interest, knowing that there are a number of equally- or better-deserving DPP members who can be part of this team.

But, an old Asian proverb says. “NO TRY, NO SUCCEED”. So, I’ll try by sharing with you my thoughts and ruminations on the subject. The views are strictly mine, but I hope there is enough there for DPP and its members to appreciate and consider me to be part of the team. It’s a bit long, so please bear with me.

Let me start with where I stand vis-à-vis what I think are the rudimentary requirements:
1. Physical Fitness
While I cannot describe my physical state in medical terms, I believe I am fit enough for the kinds of activities contemplated for this event. I do engage in physical exercise and activities: scuba diving, mountaineering, brisk walking, and yoga (the Bikram kind).

I love to walk, especially when there’s scenery to admire or when there are things to discover/uncover at ground level. I love to dive, which is the reason I obtained certification as Master Scuba Diver.

The only real reason to regret during these activities springs up in situations where a picturesque moment presents itself and I have no camera on hand to capture it.

2. Photo Gear
Camera: Near-pro DSLR, a higher-end P&S, and a consumer P&S
Flash: One oldie but reliable external flash and an underwater strobe-cum-slave flash
Casing: Casing for underwater (u/w) shoots
Tripod: A good, reliable, semi-pro one

3. Post-processing
I can do some work on Photoshop, Paintshop, and software that do mosaics and panoramas.

4. Activity Gear
I have basic gear for mountaineering and a complete set of scuba gear

5. Practical Experience and Passion
This is an area where I view the professionals as belonging to the altar. Me? I belong to the pews. I am not a pro, but Photography is my major hobby. I never made a single cent from my photos.

I started off decades ago through readings and by simply doing it with borrowed film SLRs – Konica, Nikon, Mamiya, Canon. Since then, I’ve taken pictures of still life, flora and fauna, landscapes, people, emotions, abstracts, pyrotechnics, my girlfriend (now my wife), my kids, etc.

Three years ago, my wife and I took up diving – a good excuse to buy a new digital camera with an u/w casing. Since then, I joined a divers’ photo club and participated in u/w fotofeats. Some of my u/w pics were also exhibited as part of a club fundraising event.

I bought a DSLR eight months ago. With it, I have shot nuptials, kid portraiture, church events, corporate events, products, and the like – all for free. I am a volunteer photographer at our church.

Joining “ON ASSIGNMENT Part 2” would definitely be something to look forward to, if allowed by DPP.

My objective for this event is simple: To use whatever I have to give back and learn something in the process.

To the sponsors (DPP, Seair, and Sony Erickson) I look forward to providing vignettes of (and, perhaps, an article or two on) Coron and its environs, themes that may reflect the aspects of life that each may choose to promote. The events in this shootfest present a wide variety of venues and subject matter that appeal to an equally wide variety of gears, techniques, and viewing angles. I will be very interested in those that are unique to Palawan. With the help of technology and a keen eye for a quaint moment, I plan to take photos that:
- Brighten a dull moment
- Provide a whiff of fresh air
- Tell a story
- Inspire the mind
- Tickle a funny bone
- Induce a thought
- Show the wonders of nature
- Capture emotions
- Freeze time and actions
- Touch the heart…

To the team members, I would like to be able to contribute in:
- Fellowshipping
- Sharing of experiences, skills and knowledge in photography
- Ensuring the success of the activities. Example: in dive planning (BTW, the tide tables show that there will be strong current in Coron during the shootfest)

I may be straining your eyes already, so time to close my spiel.

Thanks to DPP, Seair, and Sony Erickson for giving all DPPers the opportunity to participate in this event.

To the soon-to-be chosen ones, God bless!!! Your success will be part of my prayer requests.

I’ve taken a shot at it, let’s see where it goes…

Its a long shot, but at least I'm taking the shot.

Why me:

1. I just saw this thread, checked my calendar and then texted my wife. Both said "Yes, if you get picked, you may go."

2. I've never been to Palawan, but have been wanting to see it even before I got into photography. Going there with a group of photo bugs will be a double eye opener for me. A fresh perspective should help provide variety to the team.

3. I am not picky. I will eat almost anything, ride almost anything, sleep almost anywhere. I am not afraid of flying, swimming, hiking, and 3 hour rides over terrible roads.

4. I am no pro, just an enthusiast. That is the target market of DPP isn't it? I can be the token representative of that demographic.

5. I used to own an SE S700i... Familiarizing myself with a better SE phone shouldn't take more than the plane ride to Coron.

6. Assignment 1, Bora, was intersting, but I held out hoping for a better opportunity. In my book, Coron definitely qualifies as a better opportunity.

7. I write for a living. I dunno if that helps but if it makes my list more impressive, im writing it down.

8. I have not shot festivals. What better way to start than with a team of seasoned photographers?

9. Have I mentioned that I'm free during those dates?

10. How I plan to shoot: To learn as much as I can from the seasoned vets, but seek to find my own angles/styles. I also intend to shoot this gig film-like by bringing only 3gig worth of memory cards. Will I pull it off? Bring me along to find out.

BTW... im from bacolod. This means flying to manila to get on the plane to coron right?

Just a parting shot for this event: for DPP, especially Nick...

In tagalog, mga sana...

a. make room for those who can take over, meaning, keep alternates in the list. just in case a chosen one could not make it because:
- he/she got sick, or worse...
- a loved one needs his/her care or attention
- equipment failure, or whatever
- sudden change in a better half's state of concurrence
- work/job demands it
- prudence demands it

b. there's variety in the experience, background, age group, etc. of the team. it makes it more
- fun
- challenging
- engaging
- lively
- real-life
- inclusive (walang iwanan)

There's more, but I'll leave it at that, for now.

Thanks again.

my last pathetic attempt :P

anyway when I read about this.. the location is perfect.. the assignment is perfect... the opportunity is perfect... the date is perfect... but then...

there are three things that prohibit me to do so..

1. I'm under equipped - unless there are people who rent out photography equipment/ people who are kind enough to lend me lenses.. I need a UWA for landscapes and a fast telezoom for the safari. A great prime with underwater casing (with strobes) for the dive (more of the dive below). I can't afford all that now.. :(

2. I'm under experienced - It's really a big gamble for DPP to send a complete newbie for such an extensive assignment. For the Boracay trip, a long shot, but for this one, its near to impossible. I don't know if I can even maximize half the equipment I mentioned above :)

3. I don't know how to dive - It says it all :D a little snorkeling is ok... but a full dive, I need someone who can teach me (don't worry I'm a fast learner :P)

Well... I have already dug my grave and have nothing to lose... (full of negativity don't I) But if I could tag along that would be very sweet :) be able to shoot with great people and have great company.. that Boracay experience was something else. I wish I could experience it too.. hopefully in the next next Assignment when I'm better prepared.

cheers!

Optimistically Yours,

Carson Ryan

Like everyone else in DPP, I believe that a narrative like this is the basis for the On Assignment selection. Hence, I tried to think of the best possible 'why' over the weekend, and I came up with some things profound. Then again, I felt that the criterion should not end there -- that a great deal of the photographer's potential should also be considered.

For someone who's just starting in this field (and a mere hobbyist for that matter), I realize that there is so little I can offer compared to my fellow forum members who've exhibited their artistic capabilities through gallery submissions, contest participations, etc. But that is not to say that I didn't try well enough.

Upon gaining a Basic Photography certificate a month after I got interested in this field, I tried to learn as much information possible by reading all the materials I could get hold of -- books, magazines, online resources, and even comments/criticisms I always ask for -- in order that I can gauge if photography is just something that I felt doing for the moment or a passion I can continually do until I am able to.

Through my website (http://digicamwhore.multiply.com) (and I encourage you to browse through the albums), I realized that I have evolved considerably, so much so that I am proud to say that I am:
- ready, any time, to take my vacation;
- able to produce photos that Sony Ericsson, DPP, and I will be proud of; and
- willing to go the extreme lengths to be a valuable team player

True, I am not much, but given the opportunity to be part of this assignment, I know I am capable of delivering more than just the asked.

Wow, another DPP ON ASSIGNMENT! :). I'd like to take this opportunity to thank DPP, Sony Ericsson, and Seair for creating this unique activity. This will definitely be a fun-filled and enlightening experience for those who will be selected.

Hope I could also be considered.

1. I'm available on the these dates.
2. I'm physically fit and looking forward to the demanding challenge.
3. I haven't been to Coron. I haven't tried Sony ericsson phone, and I've never taken Seair flight, which makes me more attentive to the surroundings and the overall experience, and enables me to share more details for the magazine since its my first time.

On how I plan to shoot,

For the town fiesta of Coron

- I'll capture the different emotions of the people and exciting moments of the place that would make the viewers feel as if they were actually there and part of the town fiesta, just by looking at the the photos.

For the Island, Seascape, Beaches, Cliffs
- I'll try a different flavor to it. Maybe splash some infrared effect, perhaps. :D

For Wildlife
- How about portraiture and glamour photography.. wildlife style!. Instead of humans, I'll photograph the animals as my models. Group hugs shots, solo shots, etc. :D
