may i suggest to the admin that we could start a new thread with the title :photography books and publications wherein members could have a forum to post and review traditional and digital photography publications, if there isn't one yet.

We actually have a Review section that will be up soon. Just need to put more products for review on the site. This place will be appropriate for your suggestion.

thanks. that would be a welcome development worth waiting. i happen to visit a site: www.apug.org (http://www.apug.org) -(analog photography users group) last year, it has the same set up as what we have at dpp but caters to traditional photography, maybe, by browsing them, we could learn some useful bits and pieces on how we could add, deduct or improve some relevant threads here. best regards.

Hi DPP members,

I'm a real beginner in photography. For the longest time, I was happy being a snapshooter using an Olympus point and shoot. But on a trip to Batanes this April, I realized how limiting my point and shoot was since I couldn't fit the mountains, oceans and other breathtaking views in the frame (unless I wanted to fall off the cliff). So, after much begging, I managed to talk my hubby into feeling sorry for me and getting a friend's second hand Canon 20D. Yippee!!!!! :) While I'm ever thankful for my first DSLR, I'm also quite overwhelmed with all the fancy buttons and controls for heaven knows what! :Scared: I read the manual to familiarize myself with what the what my 20D can do. But, I also don't want to cramp my limited brains with so much technical info just yet.

What I really want to learn now is: 1) how do I take great pics, regardless of what kind of camera I have, and 2) get the basics of an SLR or DSLR camera (ie. shutter speed, aperture, etc). Would appreciate your recommendations on:

books (include title, author, and bookstore where available) which cover techniques and tips for taking more effective photos.
a beginner's photography class that would cover basic and functionalities of DSLR as well as creative techniques for taking photos beyond just snapshots.Hope you can help. Sorry if the note is too long, couldn't contain my excitement! Thanks in advance, shutterbugs!

P.S. Since DPP's pilot, I have bought every issue in the bookstands... should be a good start, right? :)

Cheers --- Bettina

Hi Bettina,

I think all you need is all in the internet now. You'll never ran out of things to learn in the web. Books are also OK and I see a lot of basic digital photography at powerbooks and fully booked.

There are several classes to attend also like OWG, PCCI, DPI, FPPF, etc. You can't go wrong with any of them.

When I was starting, I make it a point that I will shoot 2 rolls per week focusing on one subject only per week. I shot almost everything I can see in my house like spoon, fork, leaves, rocks, walls, cat, etc. The objective is to make those simple things beautiful. After six months, I repeated one of the subjects and was surprised how I improved.

:)

hi bettina!

i could certainly feel your excitement! :) i would agree with my forum mates here that much of the basics you can glean off the internet. google is your best friend and simplicity of search words will help you go a long way.

shoot for a couple of weeks. shoot a variety of subjects. then you would get an initial feel of what comes close to your heart when you hold a camera. from thereon, you should try browsing magazines (not just dpp ha, but syempre essential) about your interests and study the works of other photographers.

that was the method i took. aside from reading A LOT of books, ebooks, emagazines and online tutorials, i also spend a considerable amount of time going over other photographers works. it inspires my own photography in a big, big way.

of course, if you have any inquiry, you can just post here sa dpp forum and everyone will jump at the chance to help you :)

so goodluck and i wish you all the best!

these books helped me alot compared to the more popular ones:

http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Idiots-Guide-Photography-Third/dp/1592573568/sr=8-1/qid=1157704277/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-2276156-2080142?ie=UTF8&s=books

...and they're cheaper too. for less than 1k, you get both of them. i still see some in National Bookstore.

but dont rely on books alone, shoot, shoot, shoot! and if you could apprentice for a photographer, that would be very beneficial.

For the times when we're not shooting and just enjoying some down time, what books do you find help you prepare for the next action-packed event?

I found this little treasure for P99 only at the Karl Edwards bazaar in the tent.

This is available in National Bookstore. Pricier, but you can take advantage of the on-going cut-price booksale. It's part of Nat Geo's excellent Field Guide series.

I highly recommend Basketball's Best Shots (http://www.amazon.com/Basketballs-Best-Shots-DK-Publishing/dp/0789489147) by DK Publishing. Available in Fully Booked. I think I saw this before in Powerbooks too, but I'm notsure.

I have been looking for this book for the last three years: Chicago Bulls: Portrait of an Era (http://www.amazon.ca/Chicago-Bulls-Portrait-Mark-Vancil/dp/0966357205/sr=1-174/qid=1158193725/ref=sr_1_174/702-1805867-3598453?ie=UTF8&s=books). Anyone know where I can get this locally?

And two books I am looking to get myself for Christmas:

1) Digital Sports Photography : Take Winning Shots Every Time (http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Sports-Photography-Winning-Shots/dp/0764596071/sr=8-1/qid=1158193800/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-8775706-0044661?ie=UTF8&s=books)

the most convenient and cheapest way to learn photography is the internet. there are a lot of resources that you can read on para when you attend the workshops/classess, nakapag jumpstart ka na. :D

and for classess, click mo yung calendar dito sa dpp, madami nagbibigay ng workshops. i my self attended some of it. and o learned a lot from the workshop and sa mga co-participants mo. :D

For Books: I suggest you get UNDERSTANDING EXPOSURE by BRYAN PETERSON...really good book

I agree, this is one of the best explanations on the relationship of shutter, aperture and ISO. It gives you a great overview of how to get correct exposure based on what you want to achieve. I have frequently used the brother skies and it's cousin reflecting skies and mr. greenjeans. I found Bryan to be humorous and yet is a very good teacher. Highly recommended......you may also look at perfect exposure by jim zuckerman.

Welcome to DPP Bettina. Many books have been written about photography and the Internet is a goldmine to find these materials. Look for a book that will help you understand the basic concepts of exposure and composition. Something that will help develop your "eye of the photographer" skills. The eye of the photographer is simply your ability to recognize highlights and shadows on the things you see everyday. By being able to recognise H&S, you'd be able to determine the correct exposures for your shots. As far as compostion, I think the "Rule of Thirds" is an important concept to learn. I hope this helps. Enjoy the forum and happy shooting.

I recommend attending the classes of Jay Alonzo at Alcove. Very informative.
But I think the key is really practice.
I agree with Master Dino that you just need to keep on shooting. The creativity side of photography I believe should come from within. What you can learn from books or seminars would be the technical side of it.
Good luck and enjoy shooting!

I was hoping that fellow members would also input books they have in their personal libraries and would like others to know about and learn from. This is the reason I posted this thread in Snapshots -- to help "students for life" like me.

Also a good way to practice taking product shots (or table top) as I had done with his book.

BTW, they are having a sale at Fully Booked at Gateway Mall from today until Sunday!

I believe there is already a thread somewhere here about Recommended Books on Photography. For some reason, I can't find it. :(

Anyway, I had this book, but I lend it to someone and i never got it back. For me, its more of a supplement kind of book. If you already know your basics (e.g. exposure settings, lighting, composition), this book just supplements your "knowledge" on how to set it up. May I also recommend this book: PhotoIndex by Jim Krause. Mostly its about composition. But offers some techniques on Photoshop and lighting.

BTW, I got hold of the latest from National Geographic: The Ultimate Field Guide to Photofraphy. It is a 2006 release. I have yet to start reading it. Got if from Fully Booked in Rockwell for less than 2K. It's the same size as the other NG Field Guides, just thicker, at one inch. :)

What digital photography book would you recommend for amateurs or advance amateurs that can help improve photography skills for landscape and/or portraits? I see a lot of conflicting reviews on different books so I would like to know from you guys who actually used these books...

Assuming you will pursue your plans, when are you planning to start importing the books? I hope your pricing is good compared to bookstores who also accepts orders but takes a while before you get the books.

If it is soon, here is one title you might want to bring in:
Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) (Paperback or Hardbound)
by Bryan Peterson (Author)

Hi guys, thank you for participating. These are the initial books I will be offering. Amherstmedia, Watson Guptill - Amphoto, and Ilex. I am talking to Peachpit, publisher of Scott Kelby books. I probably start offering this after my wife gave birth. Target time frame would be mid August.

My price will be around 1k to 2k per book depending on the titles. Some might go over 2k though.

Thanks for all those who participated!

how and where are you getting your books from? amphoto and amherst books (overstocked or distressed) can be had for as low as 99 cents from some ontario flea markets-that's where i got mine. i have a complete amherst series and i remember my wife donating my amphoto ones to the salvation army and goodwill. ask some dpp members from the toronto area to check out pickering flea market. i hope the guy who i got the books from is still there or else the dixie flea market in mississauga or dr, flea in brampton. i saw them there too for the same price. i will ask my wife to drop by those places too before she comes over to manila. i think they are the best books in photography. they have some in hidalgo too.

@ Basil

I hope I can get the books at that price. I will be an authorized distributor of the publishers I mentioned earlier. Time to time I might go to their regional offices or ask them to ship it here in Manila. So my price will be relatively higher compared to the books in Ontario.

What Books can our Photography guru's in DPP can recommend for reading and reference? The kind of books a newbie should read aside from the camera manual and the kind that can be bought locally. I'm not looking for internet articles since I am not always online. Something I can carry with me and read while I am stuck in traffic or waiting for my ride. I am looking for books on portrait and lighting. Any recommendations?

Hi Mea,

for me I didn't try looking for books here locally, I actually bought it at Amazon. It's hard to look for books especially if you can't get reviews on how good the book is. With Amazon you can actually see the feedback from Pros or prosumers alike. First books I bought was Exposure and Lighting by Michael Meadhra and Charlotte Lowrie. The information from this book together with a basic photography class from Jo Avila really put things into perspective for me.

I have a few books in my humble mini-library. But they only get pulled off the shelf when I need a quick reference or for clarification purposes.

I would recommend most of the books by Nick Kelsh.

Cheers!

Nothing beats taking a formal lesson bro  Why don't you try FPPF (http://www.photoworldmanila.com/08_basic.htm)?

A camera's manual is often taken for granted....perhaps you can also start from there hehe

OR if you are too concerned about your budget, you might as well just surf the net and get tons of information for Free

Oh there's more.....subscribe to DPP :D

already done those sir...

the manual, i read it from cover to cover. actually, im using an upgraded model of my previous camera, so their functions and user interface is not quite different, and also their manual. im at the point of almost memorizing it already hehe

DPP, i bought already the latest issue...

as for formal lessons...im still saving up for it. and also im looking for schedules which will be favorable for me since shifting is being implemented in our office.

i was actually looking for a sort-of "photography for dummies" and the likes... :D

please post here any recommendations.

TIA :D

Aside from the manual (some are very detailed and reading it does help a lot) I find the Lonely Planet books on photography to be very appealing. I only have two (Travel Photography and Urban Travel Photography) but they also have titles on People, Wildlife, etc.

BTW, I found them at Fully Booked. They have a lot of books on the subject so if you really want to learn from a book, its a good start.

i understand some concerns of newbies with the user manual. though it is an essential that you read AND reread the manual, there are some things that the manual cannot provide. therefore photography books are important to further the learning process.

here are my two book lists for the extreme newbie:
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC: The Ultimate field Guide to Photography
-this book is written by different photographers and discusses the different aspects of photography, from the camera, to different artistic aspects of photography. there are even different commentaries about respected photographers, briefly explaining the techniques that make them stand out. the writing however is a bit technical and may be a little hard to swallow. aside from this book, national geographic also has some "field guide" series books focusing on different aspects of photography.
Understanding Digital Photography: Techniques for Getting Great Pictures (by Bryan peterson)
-this is a bit easier to swallow. the author writes more in layman terms, and even explains in detail how his sample photographs were taken (more like a tutorial). bryan peterson also has another highly regarded book (and i've been trying to find it in manila bookstore shelves for a while) called understanding exposure which is supposed to be a very good book.

as for lessons, i cannot recommend any because any because my formal lessons were through my old alma mater's photography club (thank you mr. vic misola...) which was 11 years ago (i was grade 5 hehehe)...

Photography books are not cheap unless they are outdated
the Nat Geo Field guides are good but the ones in National Bookstore are already obsolete(digital in its infancy days)
I recommend Tom Ang's series on Digital Photography new series come out every now and then and the price is reasonable.
Magazines are also fine specially Pop Photo.

There are two well known and highly recommended Bryan Peterson books that cover:

Technicalities: Understanding Exposure (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Updated/dp/0817463003/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b)
Composition: Learning To See Creatively (http://www.amazon.com/Learning-See-Creatively-Composition-Photography/dp/0817441816/ref=pd_sim_b_njs_3)

And this, fairly new one (for technique), completes the triad: Understanding Shutter Speed (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Shutter-Speed-Low-Light-Photography/dp/0817463011/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_c)

I have read the first two, got hooked and bought the first at Fully Booked. Crystal explanation from the author. Coupled with his own striking images, the thinking process and the important settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length) are all included on the image samples.

Hope that helps! :)

I recently stumbled upon some photography books. Before snapping them up though, I just wanted to get some feedback about the books so that I get a good deal since, as usual, the books here are all wrapped up.

1) "The Studio Photographer's Lighting Bible" by Calvey Taylor-Haw (http://www.amazon.com/Studio-Photographers-Lighting-Bible/dp/2940378231)

2) "Portrait Photography: Secrets of Posing & Lighting" by Mark Cleghorn (http://www.amazon.com/Portrait-Photography-Secrets-Posing-Lighting/dp/157990548X)

3) "The Essential Lighting Manual for Photographers" by Chris Weston (http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Lighting-Manual-Photographers-Revised/dp/2940378460)

4) "Lighting and the Dramatic Portrait: The Art of Celebrity and Editorial Photography" by Michael Grecco (http://www.amazon.com/Lighting-Dramatic-Portrait-Celebrity-Photography/dp/0817442278/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1IBOIHNURGUAT&colid=G024Z0PELOY4)

Did the search for you, here's Cleghorn's book (http://books.google.com/books?id=wRbcGU2snGwC&printsec=frontcover&dq=Portrait+Photography:+Secrets+of+Posing+%26+Lig hting&as_brr=3) and here's the newer version of Weston's book... (http://books.google.com/books?id=4lu70laX4VQC&printsec=frontcover&dq=The+Essential+Lighting+Manual+for+Photographers&as_brr=3#PPP1,M1) Good luck with the other two.

Hi guys, try rotovision pro lighting series...not sure who is the distributor there in Philippines....I suggest if you really into pro photography, you have to swallow your pride and work as assistant to the pro photographer even without pay...the hardest way but you will be the winner after..

Cheers,

@ teybartolome: thanks for the link!

@ andrewong: yup! but the staff of NBS are harder to deal with regards to taking the book out of the plastic compared to other stores, like Fullybooked.

@ David Tong: thanks! i did look for the books but they are limited previews of a single part, not several parts which can help decide about the over-all value.. so i thought about asking as well. :)

@ Efraim Evidor: thanks for the reco and advice! not looking into going pro, though i would love to be able to VA for someone if the chance arises. haha

ANSEL ADAMS by Barry Pritzker: only P150, yes that's about US$3.00. A few copies still left.

I recently bought a Canon 40D and I really want to learn the ins and outs of the camera so I researched on photography books. I found 2 good books: Canon EOS 40D Digital Field Guide by Charlotte K. Lowrie and Canon EOS 40D Guide to Digital Photography by David D. Busch. I have searched the online databases of both National Bookstore and Powerbooks and they did not have either. Both are available however in Amazon for around $20 but if you guys know any store in the Metro Manila area that sells photography books, please share it here.

Try calling your preferred bookstore and ask if they have "The Digital Photography Book" by Scott Kelby (3 volumes); or you can buy from e-bay. Very easy to read, not too technical. You may also want to check out "Hot Shoe Diaries" by Joe McNally; "The Photographer's Eye" by Michael Freeman; "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.

Also, as @edwardgo said, there are many other titles available at National Bookstore. Go there and browse. They won't let you open the plastic packaging though. If you want to make sure you're making a good buy, ask the saleslady for a list of all available photography books and google each title for reviews.

HTH:)

Actually i kindly ask the sales lady to open it for me so i can browse it, just don't over do it. Anway, NB at shang-rila has lots of open books so does in gb2 branch and some in megamall. Except in main cubao...everything is sealed there nowadays. Also at 4flr NB Robinsons galleria has lots of open books for browsing. :)

You can also check NB at the Podium. Most of their books are available for browsing. An alternative would be checking out the booksale branches. You may chance upon a good photopgraphy book in their shelves.

anyone knows where I can buy a copy of "The Moment It Clicks by Joe Mcnally" locally?

The book gives you amazing insights of the world of photography. It inspires. It challenges. It informs. But perhaps most importantly, it will help you understand photography and the art of making great photos at a level you never thought possible.

A "MUST HAVE" book IMHO

Hi Donnel.

I go for used books bargained at Amazon for as low as $2-$8. If you can get several books from one source you save much on delivery. Snail mail is the cheapest but you'll have to wait a good 6-8 weeks or more. In my case, I have it delivered to my sister's place in the US where she piles 'em up and send to me by bulk.

A field guide on your camera model always helps. Also check out books recommended by Thom Hogan and the other pros; you'll seldom go wrong with that. HTH.

scott kelby's books are very useful light-reads if you want a sort-of-crash-course to the world of photography. I am currently reading "understanding exposures" which I borrowed from a friend. If you can find one, I suggest you grab a copy..

I think this is the best general book on photography currently available. It also contains the relevant chapters of 3-4 books that Bryan Peterson wrote. It's available in NBS.

To whom are you referring your question?

IMHO, you could get faster response if you would address your question to a specific poster.

Photography newbie here! I immediately gravitated towards this topic as I like touching pages more than scrolling down them.

I bought Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure, 3rd edition and I really like it! Granted I'm still a newbie and some concepts still go over my head, the book allows me to develop a good understanding of how those concepts matter in taking a picture.

I also have The Digital Photography Book, Volume 1 by Scott Kelby. This one tackles photography with less technical terms and a lot of jokes. Very good read for a newbie, though can still give advanced tips as you progress in the world of photography.

My aunt promised to send me copies of Shutterbug. Hope to get them soon!
