Does the light metering mode setting have an effect when the camera is in manual mode?

yes. you base your settings on what your meter is giving you depending on the setting it is in.

by choosing the metering mode, you are in effect choosing what part of the scene to take a reading from; hence you base your settings (in manual mode) on the readout.

Oh ok. In manual mode my point and shoot just tells me how much the scene is under/overexposed, but that's good enough for me. Is it the same for dslrs? Or do you get more detail?

i'm not so sure how manual mode works in p&s cameras. but in dslrs/slrs, you'll find your meter reading as represented by something like this in your viewfinder
( -2 - - - 0 - - - +2) where 0 is middle tone (neutral gray) and -2 is towards black tones and +2 is towards white tones.

i'm not sure as to the accuracy of my terminology here. maybe someone with more experience can help out.

You mean manual mode in exposure ? I think your metering won't change not untill you change the mode . If it is set in matrix it will always be in matrix even you are in auto, manual, programed or semi manual. (apperture priority of shutter speed priority). Hope I am rigth because i am a newbe as you.:Grin:

When shooting in manual mode your camera uses center weighted metering even if you have set your metering in matrix previously. That's for Canon as far as I know. Better read the manual.

But 1 question, what do you mean by light metering? Exposure metering or flash metering? I believe all cameras meter exposure and flash differently.

Exposure metering. :) Still saving up for my first DSLR.
