View Full Version : Slave for SB800
Melvin Vivas 08-15-2006, 11:25 AM Hi Guys,
I need a slave flash for my SB800. I think using a SB600 as a slave is quite overkill and expensive just for the purpose of having a 2nd light source. I plan to use it for outdoor shoots and I'd like something portable.
Are there cheaper alternatives? I won't mind other brands. :)
Thanks.
Aris Guerrero 08-15-2006, 11:34 AM use your sb800 as the slave to your camera. commander mode for d70 or d200. use su-4 for any other on camera flash.
Melvin Vivas 08-15-2006, 11:37 AM What setting do I have to set in my flash?
Using commander mode, do I need to pop out my built-in flash?
Sorry for the ignorance, I'm really a Nikon newbie

Pretty useful info...
Melvin Vivas 08-15-2006, 03:23 PM Has anyone tried this as a slave flash?

Aris Guerrero 08-15-2006, 04:57 PM melvin, im pretty sure it wont work with your current setup. best is an sb-600 (or 800) or the setup i suggested before. :)
Melvin Vivas 08-16-2006, 10:51 AM I was able to use my SB800 as slave when I set the flash mode of my camera to manual. The Sunpak also worked. Maybe it fires upon receiving some light.
However, I tried using my SB800 as the slave to my d70s in commander mode. In my camera, I also set the flash mode to manual. However, my SB800 isn't sync with my built-in flash. I set my SB800 to Remote and SU4 to try it out. I can't remember what setting in the flash does it fire but when the SB800 fired, it fires earlier.
I feel I forgot some configuration in either the flash or the camera for the commander mode. Any ideas why the commander mode is not working?

chewychua 08-16-2006, 11:09 AM you might have to set it to channel 3 to get it to wirelessly sync.

Aris Guerrero 08-16-2006, 11:14 AM su-4 is non-TTL (so flash exposure is not auto-computed by the camera body and the sb800)
try:

Melvin Vivas 08-16-2006, 11:56 AM @chewy Thanks for the additional info. I will try it again tonight.
I see. I'll try the setup again tonight. I hope I could make it work using TTL since it's more accurate.

Vince_Villamin 08-16-2006, 02:19 PM Really interesting thing, with my nikon D70 on commander mode (for the pop up flash), I can mount my SB-800 (on wireless TTL) on a light stand and get great results. I can easily move around (or move the stand around) and get balanced lighting all through the frame, since the on board flash also fires. This of course works better on a D200 or D80 with multiple channel control and the ability to turn off the on board flash making it effectively a remote trigger only.
BTW, i believe the proper setting for the D70 and the SB800/600 to work is channel 3 group A :)
Melvin Vivas 08-17-2006, 01:36 AM Here's a sample shot I took using my on-board flash, one sb800 for the background and the Sunpack slave. I used manual flash setting for this setup. I wish I had another sb600. hehehe

Melvin Vivas 08-17-2006, 01:31 PM What do you mean? :)
If you meant that if I have a shot of my cam...here it is...borrowed my friend's 350D to shoot it...This is using 3 lights as well. The Sunpack was at the right side to highlight the nikon text in the strap. The shot was post-processed using levels because I wasn't able to get the details of the 350D off cam. Hence, the noise.

Here's another shot I took of my Yashica RF. 3 lights were also used. Background is a white wall. I just bounced my SB800 against the wall and placed a green plastic bag over it to get the greenish color. The shadows are intentional to get some depth.

ManFai Hui 08-17-2006, 02:07 PM I can see that you have your new cam... I was waiting for you 350D :D but since you have sold it to your cousin .. I guess I have to look for a good buy... Again, congrats on your new cam !! Happy shooting ...

Hi Melvin,
It's nice if you can get another SB800 for your CLS setup. At least even if you swap flash units... It will be easier to configure, for any one of them can be the slave or commander. IMO. :)
However, if you want cheaper alternatives... try to look at the Sunpak line. They're strong and relatively inexpensive flashguns.
Melvin Vivas 08-20-2006, 02:10 AM Just want to share the lighting I did for this shot. I used my SB800 to provide the background by bouncing it off the wall. The yellow color was made possible by the plastic bag covering my SB800. The lighting for the shadows came from the Sunpak slave. I used manual mode in my cam and set SU4 in my SB800 flash.:)

Hi Guys!
The Nikon CLS is a quick and easy set up for portraits. I shot this photo of my mom using an SB800 positioned high on her right side and I positioned a reflector on her left side for fill. I shot the photo at f/8 and the flash postioned about 4 feet away from the subject, and shot it on manual full power through a white umbrella to soften the light. (Pardon the tilt of the photo, it needs to be adjusted a little)
Im planning to get another SB800 just to give me more lighting options. If you are looking for a super portable system that will provide good lighting, Nikon CLS does the job!

You don't need another SB800. An extra SB600 would do.
I had this dilemma before if I should buy an extra flash for CLS. Eventually, I didn't. I saw that a strobe setup will be cheaper in the long run. No, I didn't buy it yet. Still carefully studying if it's worth it.
There are a lot of options in terms of lighting. Hold on to your cash first and do some more research if you really need it.
Anton Lorenzo 11-07-2006, 07:08 PM Melvin,
You are absolutely right about the strobes. I have had sleepless nights thinking about spending a little more and get myself a real studio strobe. Those SB800's don't come cheap! Besides recycling time is slow with the SB800.
I just need to wait a little more so I can save for better lighting.
