View Full Version : Pancake Lens
mitzpicardal 07-11-2007, 11:37 AM Anybody here owns a pancake lens?
Is it worth the price? DA or FA?
I'm planning to buy the DA70mm or the FA77mm. Is the image quality of the FA a lot better on the FA considering the price difference?
DA* pancake magkakaroon kaya?
basil carating 07-11-2007, 12:08 PM i have a 40mm 2.8. nothing spectacular. very sharp pictures much like any other primes because of the absence of play. it has been sitting somewhere in the house for more than a year now (don't even know where it is) because i find it very limiting and i can't be bothered with changing lenses every time. sold my 1stds body too. i am using a nikon pancake presently (original tessar-designed) but again it's finding itself on the bench most of the time because i would rather just walk around with my 18-200 vr. the only saving grace for these lenses i think, is when you walk down hidalgo st. with your pentax or nikon slung on your shoulder and people exclaimng ""ANO YUN?" happened to me just last week..
noliperfecto 07-11-2007, 01:21 PM I have the DA21mm. In my opinion this is the ultimate travel lens - small, light and very sharp. Great for landscape or just getting a snapshot of your group or family. At first I thought it might not be wide enough but I actually find myself cropping a little from my travel shots.:)

You can download the Pentax's lens development roadmap here (http://www.digital.pentax.co.jp/en/lens/). There does not appear to be DA* pancake on it; the closest being the DA* 55/1.4 SDM which is still tentative.
I don't own either, but I did get a chance to borrow both to get a general impression. The FA 77 is not really a pancake lens; it is quite like a normal lens. Offhand, I lean towards the FA 77 because I still shoot a lot of film, but if it were not for that, the DA 70 is an equal contender as far as sharpness and contrast is concerned. Also, the FA 77 has a bigger aperture (1.8 vs. 2.4) and that is a good one stop which may be a big deal for some.
Chelo Pascua 07-11-2007, 07:14 PM only the 21, 40 (DA and an older film version) and 70 are pancake lenses. the 31, 43, 77 are limited lenses. image quality wise - probably the same unless you will print an A0 poster regularly. I will choose probably the 77 for the aperture advantage - unfortunately, it is also more expensive than the 70. probably it is also luckier! 77
Randall Cipriano 07-11-2007, 07:22 PM The DA 21, 40, and 70 are also Limiteds. :)

Ahh yes, I should have said pancake limited, then non-pancake limited only. Neither of those are limited in image quality . An older 40 for film was not a "limited" though and didn't quite perform well with dSLRs. Everyone already probably knows the difference between the FAs and DAs.
Randall Cipriano 07-12-2007, 08:29 AM The DA*55mm f/1.4 has no specs yet so there's still a chance it may be a pancake. But I doubt it though because of the large aperture. That's one thing the DA Limiteds had to sacrifice for it's compactness... the large apertures found on the FA Limiteds.
There's also the announced DA 35mm F2.8 Macro Limited, but of course it's not a pancake.
Forgot to congratulate Mitz on his new K10D! :)
Pahiram ako DA70 ha? Hehehe.
Randall Cipriano 07-12-2007, 08:42 AM I hope Doc Mark doesn't mind, but I grabbed this photos from his gallery.

Rodney Torres 07-20-2007, 11:32 PM I got hooked a while ago...
Just bought myself a DA 40mm f2.8 pancake... P15,840 at Pentax Megamall.
Mga sir, please share your 21mm pancake portrait shots. =)
I'm curious about this lens too.
Thanks.

noliperfecto 07-21-2007, 05:19 AM Well, I don't really use the DA21 for portraits but here's a couple of candid snaps:
