Thanks for sharing your pictures, people. I liked the great shots but more importantly, the EXIF data was very useful and helpful.

I am planning to buy a Nikon 55-200 mm VR soon (sorry, this is the only lens that fits my budget as of now) and I'm itching to venture into sports photography with the Nikon D40. Hope this lens would do nicely.

I believe it is Ateneo vs. NU this Saturday, July 21. At least you can move around freely in Ninoy Aquino Stadium. I don't think you can enjoy the same freedom at the Araneta Coliseum on an Ateneo-La Salle game (is it on Thursday, July 26?)

Aly, what lens would you recommend with the Nikon D40 for a beginning sports photographer? How much would that cost?

Dondi (or sir Dondi :) ), you can get a 50mm 1.8... that would be a good starter... even the seasoned ones use it :) I don't know how much it is for Nikon, pero it's one of the best and cheapest lenses for canon...

You can drop the "Sir", Erwin. We are all equals here in this hobby. Besides, you are making me feel old. :D

Thanks for the advice, Erwin. By the way, I looked at all your shots in the Ateneo-Adamson game. Great shots. I downloaded most of them so I could learn what techniques to apply in order to upgrade my skill on sports photography.

hmmm interesting problem. i would agree with erwin although you would have to contend with manual focus for the d40 and 50 1.8 combo (incidentally the 50 1.8 would cost somewhere between 5.5k and 6.5k depending on where you get it).

they key problem here is that you won't be able to autofocus on non af-s lenses. if you're just beginning, i'd say stick with the kit first and perhaps try manual focusing with a 50 1.8. get the technique down then figure out what lens you need to buy after that.

Looks like i won't be able to watch the Ateneo-NU game this Saturday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Too far and too much hassle to go there. Why can't the UAAP hold the games at the Araneta Coliseum or at least the Blue Eagle Gym where it's at least accessible via the LRT.:(

Thanks Dondi (yan wala nang sir) for the comments... it is really hard to shoot lahat ng games... most of us are professionals with actual day jobs... though I'd love to shoot the highschool teams, sa ngayon di pa nagfit sa schedule ko... maybe you'd want to try and take pics there :) hopefully, anytime this year, I can find time to take pics of them :) as for the Ateneo-La Salle game, I will be shooting the Lady's game at noon... pass muna ako sa Seniors... as Aly said, araneta is very strict... and the stress of getting in is not enough to cover for the chance to shoot the game... besides, in games like these, we hardly shoot :) I for one watch most of the time :) I shot the last couple of Ateneo-La Salle games a couple years back, and Ateneo ended up losing... will watch na lang at home and see if we win :)

You've posted pictures of the seniors and the women's basketball games but is someone, anyone covering the high school team, the Ateneo Blue Eaglets?

I watched the juniors game at the Blue Eagle Gym last Sunday (vs the UE Pages) but I guess the lighting at the place is not really very good as a lot of my shots came out underexposed.

Are you ready for the Ateneo-La Salle game this Thursday?

Hey Dondi - first of all thank you for your kind words. Lighting at the BEG is on the bad side and will always come out underexposed even with a 2.8 lens and ISO 1600. However, the extra push you can give during PP will make them manageable. Not great, but manageable.

I for one shoot underexposed even if the lighting is good. This is to preserve highlight detail because I shoot on multi-segment metering. There are times when the meter will read zero but highlights are blown out. That is why I have always turned the exposure dial down either 1/3 or 2/3 stops. It also helps that I shoot RAW because it gives more latitude when doing PP.

Next time you're watching/shooting at the BEG, try this - ISO 3200, 2.8, try to get at least 1/400 and shoot RAW. Shots will be a bit noisy but shooting underexposed at ISO 1600 and then pushing it a stop up during PP will yield the same results if not worse.

In an earlier post, one of you said that you might not be able to shoot the Ateneo-La Salle game because the very strict Araneta security won't allow DSLR cameras into the place.
I myself bought my Nikon Coolpix 5100 and contented myself with taking pictures of the mammoth crowd from the Upper B section.

But somehow, you guys managed to pull it off and get the job done! THANKS!

Did anyone get shots of the face to face, eye to eye, nose to nose confrontation between Ford Arao and Rico Maierhoffer (hope I spelled his name correctly)?

Nice to view pictures of the game after watching it live. Nothing beats the atmosphere of an Ateneo-La Salle game. Now if only someone uploaded the entire game on You-Tube.....:D

hmm, i heard that araneta management are pretty strict on people brining in slrs when there are games held there, making it kinda tricky to bring one in, especially for high profile or rivalry games like ateneo-la salle or letran-san beda.

how about other venues - cuneta astrodome or ninoy aquino stadium - are they equally tough on aspiring sports photographers? i'm really just looking for more opportunities to practice.

Mark, if the games are not "rival" games as you mentioned, they wouldn't be that strict. You could always try. This coming Thursday games will be at the Astrodome. The problem at the Astrodome though is that the space at the sidelines are not that wide.

unfortunately, weekday games are a bit tough for me to attend, since i'll be coming from the office. weekend ones, however, are a different story.

anyone know the weekend sched of games and the venue?

and just out of curiosity, why aren't the uaap games played over at the arena in san juan? i believe that the ncaa holds their games there, right? not only is the place easily accessible, but it does offer good lighting (at least based on my pbl experiences).

Yup, the cast is quite pronounced. I used a custom WB. The skin tones are too yellow but the white of the uniforms seem ok. That's what I get for not shooting regularly! I don't have my settings down pat.
