hi. let's gather all our best photoshop tips & tricks to creatively enhance our photographs. this is a continuation of maryann viray's "how to make a black and white photo with colored details in simple steps (can be found here: http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=7145". )

so far, there are 3 tricks posted there:
1. BW w/ colored details
2. Diffused glow filter
3. blurred background

lets add some more on this thread:)
thanks!

the basic diffused glow filter:
it kinda eliminates noise & some blemishes, sort of near the effect of glamour photography yet needs to be worked on more. here are some examples (they were taken in dim light with high ISO = high noise). with some curves tweaking & the diffused glow filter, i managed to somehow save them.

background blurring (pseudo DOF) :)
its like decreasing the DOF, but digitally. select the background of your image, apply the lens blur filter, that's it. of course, tweaking the curves, saturation, contrast can further enhance the photo) here's an example:

@sir vin..

just a DUMB question.. regarding your tutorial..

here's one for Orton effect:

duplicate your image (the background layer) twice
set the first duplicate with "screen" blend mode & the second with "multiply".
apply gaussian blur to the 2nd copy (just enough to blur the details while maintaining the shapes - i suggest start with 10, then increase by increments of 5 until you get it just right).

what will I do after?

maryannviray

a quick steps in whitening teeth

1. open the image and duplicate it

2. using the selection tool carefully select the teeth

3. after you have selected the teeth,go to image > adjustments> hue and saturation

4. adjust the saturation slide to the left just right to make your teeth look naturaly white

and also adjust the lightness slide a little going to the right for a glowing white teeth....

thats all folks!

@jonathan, you can save it if you want for printing or posting here in DPP :)
seriously, it's your choice whether you want to keep that setting or do more enhancements. there is no one workflow for all images, each image requires different workflow and it all depends on the photog/graphic artist. as a suggestion for the orton effect, if you already like the effect, either save it as jpg or psd.

better black&white:
with your colored image, do not just desaturate. first, increase the contrast. i suggest to do it using separate shadows/highlights/midtones contrast adjustment. then desaturate. the BW effect will be much pro-looking than just a grayscaled photo:)

under exposed image tip.....

when working for an under exposed image i suggest not only to adjust the levels but also you must adjust the shadows/highlights of the image...

I created this image for the manual or users guide of a company. I took a print screen image of the website and an image of a computer then edit and crop the web site's image to fit to the computer's LCD screen. So, it will look like the computer is logged on the company's web site. Also took a picture of man, but not really going to choice his face, pointing on or reading a book. I edited it and put same lens flare or shining effect on the tip of his index finger. I cut both images and place it on a white background then faded it on each corner to blend and finally put some text on the upper left and lower right portion of the whole image (user's guide). :)

and the result! something like that...

I copied the original image then paste it on top of the original (in macromedia fireworks, same with photoshop). adjust the hue saturation of the top image then erased the lip part to reveal the image below it (for the original lip color to appear) then selected the blur tool then set to desired transparency to blur the background. :)

hi. not sure if its the same, but here's my try on that effect:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1282/833687521_9bbd5ff6cb.jpg
steps: increase contrast & brightness, desaturate, apply warming filter, changed the eye color to blue (color balance), then erased the background using a zero-hardness brush.
its not the exact effect in your link, but it's the closest i can get to for now :)

STEP 1 - Duplicate The Background Layer First duplicate the
background layer. Go Layer > New > Layer via Copy. Now we
have 2 layers, the Background Layer, and Layer 1.

STEP 2 - Desaturate The Photo With Layer 1 selected, choose
Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. This gives us a grayscale
version of the photo.

STEP 3 - Duplicate Layer 1 At this point you must duplicate
Layer 1. With Layer 1 selected, click Layer > New > Layer
via Copy. Now we have 3 layers, the Background Layer, Layer
1 and Layer 2.

Now we will work with Layer 2.

STEP 4 - Invert Layer 2 With Layer 2 selected, click Image >
Adjustments > Invert. This will make your photo look like a
negative.

STEP 5 - Change The Layers Blend Mode To Color Dodge In the
Layers Palette change the Layers Blend Mode for this layer
(Layer 2) to Color Dodge. This will make your photo almost
completely white, ok, don't panic! it's part of the process!

STEP 6 - Apply The Gaussian Blur Filter Click Filter > Blur
> Gaussian Blur. When the dialog box appears start by moving
the Radius Slider all the way to the left. Once you've done
that you can start to slowly move it to the right.

vin can i ask you kung pano mo ginawa yung border na yan?yung white..thanks :)
hi. here's how:
1. with the final image (flattened), duplicate the layer (or use any layer of the same size, it doesn't matter what it contains) then rename it as "border"
2. with a rectangular marquee on the border layer, "frame" your image then delete that part of the border layer.
3. invert selection (Ctrl-Shft-I) then paint all over the border layer with black or dark gray brush
4. apply stroke (choose the color & thickness you want, white works best for me).
5. decrease opacity of the border to make it appear like glass over your image.
6. personalize! i use my logo (A) which suits the over-all appearance of the image.

experiment! (it took me > 10 different border design revisions to come up with that one :) )

ron, just experiment with all the controls. PS has almost infinite number of controls and you'll need to know as many as you can. i suggest you develop your own style by imitate-then-innovate technique :) you can find a lot of tutorials on the web actually, i find no need yet for a formal photoshop lesson. good luck!

Hi Guys,

Multiplicity - Not sure what this technique is called..

Saw some guys asking how one group hug here in DPP was made (honestly, i was also intrigued how it was made)..:)

From the group hug threads

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1191/904365778_b0e776dd94_b.jpg

So I experimented on what very little I know of on layers and mask and came out with my own version..

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1129/942294817_9fb12e96b6.jpg

Work flow:

The shot..
1) Set camera on manual mode, preferably around f8 or f11, shutter speed depends on the available light so try to experiment on these one.
2) Take as many shots as you want(try two shots first) without changing the position of the camera, only the models should shift positions and try to add some drama on the shot (mine was supposed to be a fight scene..hehehe)

Post processing (I'm using Gimp, though I think the same workflow applies for PS)..
1) Open the first image, open the Layers dialog. Click on the new layer button at the bottom of the dialog. Make sure the new layer is selected in the layers dialog.
2) Open the second image, select all and copy paste on the first image. Anchor second image to the first image.
3) On the new layer, add layering mask (white - full opacity), try to set opacity at around 20-30, so you will see the details of both pictures.
4) Using brushes, brush over the images on the background that you want to come out on the foreground (I'm not making sense here.hehehe).
5) After making the background image visible in the foreground, go to the layers dialog and put set opacity to 100..

Done..Now you should be able to see both images on one picture(hopefully)hehehe..

first of all you must get familliar with the tools available in ps and practice how to use them properly....adobe help topics can help you a lot....
and when you have mastered the tools ,you may use the web to search for some tutorials you want to learn..for example..search "how to whiten teeth in photoshop"

like vin i also dont have formal photoshop lesson,i just study ps myself.....

lastly, dpp can also help you a lot especially in photography.....

good design, a different concept from the one i posted.
my simulated collages are based on the principle that one photo can stand by itself. when combined, they form a scene. i dont find portraits of 1 or 2 persons as good source images for a simulated collage (maybe it's just me :))

pls drop the sir, im also a newbie:)

steps?

marquee then cut/copy then put borders & shadows. it's that easy! :D
it's better if you apply rules of composition for every frame, which i think u already know. a little creativity too will help :)

Spread type? Hhmm... haven't heard of it. You might need to check if its actually a file format. I'm thinking it has more to do with the composition/layout of the image. Or its something beyond my knowledge... heheheh :D

PS is enough, you just have to apply the right dimensions & guides. there are other softwares available for easier DVD cover layout (i have one from Nero, but i dont use it).

IMO, spread type is when the canvas size is equivalent to the spread of two pages.
ex. if you'll do an 8x10 album, spread type is 16x10 (2 8x10's side-by-side), so when it is printed, it can be laid-out over 2 pages without a cut in the middle.

When you do your layouts, do you have an allowance just incase your images would be cropped? or it won't be cropped if your image size is already in actual size?

i do my layouts in the actual size that it will be printed. sometimes i make several sizes for one layout, with all elements adjusted so they will fit in that image's aspect ratio. and make sure your printer is well informed of your preferred print size (& whether its borderless or not).

thanks jonathan. try Ezmosaic. its much easier, but the output from the 20-day trial version is very small only (max printable size is A4 i think). but with some imagination, you can make full use of its features (i can use it to print 20x30) :)

Guys, I'm not here to share tips but to ask one question.

Using my Nikon D40, I took a picture which I saved both in JPEG form and RAW , which appears as a NEF format.

Using Adobe Photoshop CS2, I was able to open the JPEG file but everytime I opened the RAW/NEF form, an error message appears:

"Adobe Photoshop cannot open the file because it is not the right kind of document"

Can anyone help me on this?

Download and install a NEF to DNG converter from the Adobe website to convert your NEF to DNG (which is native to Photoshsop) Im not sure about CS2 but CS3 can read different RAW formats.

here's some new table cards i made for a friend. i used zoom blurred background for most & pseudo-vignette for #2:
(note: photos aren't mine, don't know who's their photographer)

for zoom blurred BG:
- duplicate layer
- Filter-> Blur-> Radial Blur -> select Zoom, adjust zoom center position based on subject's position, increase effect to about 30.
-> erase blurred subject to reveal the original one, leave the BG blurred.
