hi joel,

i was contemplating submitting this one for the sports/action issue but i submitted a different one instead. nino asked for a second look at my submission, but im unsure if i made it into the issue. i guess it comes out in a few days, so if anyone sees any of my surfing shots there, please let me know.

thanks for viewing. i'll be back in manila this typhoon season for the surf coverage. hope to have an EB with all of you soon!

i'd be worried about getting hit by the board in those kinds of situations.

but on a more serious note, i like your shots. with surfing, you defintely have to get into the water to take the more dramatic moves, eh?

hey mark,

its kinda funny you mentioned that. when shooting from the water with a fisheye lens, the surfer actually must come close enough to hit you, to get a nice shot. so in the event of stray boards or water housings bonking me on the head, i wear a helmet.

superfish rule!!! hehehe! nice shot!!!:)

i sense a surfer among the bunch?? yes the 7S superfish is quite an amazing board. or was it coincidence, and you were actually referring to the fisheye lens?? I hope its the former, surfing is taking the philippines by storm and i am always happy to meet another surfer.

cheers!

but i'm guessing that the surfers have to know that there's someone out there taking their shots, eh?

and also, i guess, to shoot surfers, you really have to know a thing or to about the sport. you have to know where to position yourself to both get great shots, and not get in the way of the surfers themselves.

hi mark,

its always easy to shoot good surfers who really are in control. also, you re correct in assuming that it helps to know how to surf, to be comfortable shooting it. when you understand the sport, you can anticipate their maneuvers. also, its a big plus to be a confident swimmer and understang how to swimm through rip currents and have knowledge of the sandbars or reef below you.

once, all in check, it is really enjoyable to shoot from the water.

cheers!

i'll leave the water sports shots to you, doc. you're already doing a great job at it.

i prefer taking my shots from dry land. give me basketball, badminton, tennis, soccer action anytime. hehe:Grin:

im referring to the board though..its a keeper! whether big days or small..its fast! also, with the right setup of the fins, it'll rip every set..anyways, yah! i do surf here in the philippines. best placed that i've surfed definitely wuold be siargao and baler..:)

nice shots doc! hope to get a housing like that soon... where can we buy those stuff? what brand and model?

hi jan michael,

depending on what camera you shoot with. waterhousings are abundant. it all depends if its for surface shooting or for deep sea diving. dive housings are more impact and pressure resistant so they are heavy. surface water housings are lightweight and small.

i shoot with SPLwaterhousings.com they make some of the best housings for water photography above and below the surface, but not for deep sea diving. mine is only rated for up to 20 feet.

hope you start shooting from the water soon. its really fun!

hey dex,

howz'it braddah?? i shoot with SPL custom.

check: www.SPLwaterhousings.com

depending on the camera, it generally is about 1500.00 US for the bare minimum setup, but if you opt for the pistol grip (with remote release) flash housing, it runs a little over 2000.00

a more affordable option would be a waterproof point and shoot. look out for the pentax optio w30. www.h2ocamera.com. these are cheap, work well and get the job done if you absolutely need water shots at an affordable price.

let me know how it goes!
