Is nikon capture nx the only software that can handle the NEF files of this new body?

As of now, that seems to be the case. That topic's been discussed on Juergen Specht's D1scussions e-mail list. Check out:

Here's one shortcut that was attempted:

"Yes, as the Adobe Camera Raw site sort of points out by omission, the
D2xs isn't supported yet.

Adobe has been releasing an update about once a quarter though, so it
shouldn't be a long wait. Others who have been impatient have edited
the EXIF "Camera model" field of a copy of the NEF to read D2x...
which lets ACR 3.4 open the file."

Not sure how well that worked though...

Thanks TJ. I did the stupidest thing of buying the body without researching. But, who would have guessed that Nikon would come out with a body that needed special software to handle its output.

I can attest to this. When I got a 30D I wasn't able to import my RAW images into my existing apps either. But sure as rain, it was supported the moment the update to Adobe Camera RAW became available just a couple of months later and everything has been fine and dandy ever since.

Not to worry. It's still a great camera! I can lend you my D200 if you want. Pahiram na lang ng D2Xs mo. Kidding!
Other Nikonians mentioned other RAW converters like Bibble that might work with D2Xs files. MAybe just shoot RAW+JPG in the meantime and wait for the latest Adobe Camera Raw that will support the D2Xs.

That's probably what I'll do. Shoot raw+jpeg until software catches up to hardware. Thanks for the offer of your D200!:)

@Dave
So, you were just storing pics for two months?

What's the main difference of the D2Xs and the D2X aside from the screen view and improved battery life?

Better noise handling
faster auto focus/tracking subject
Bigger buffer
more tone curves can be downloaded
Its basically just a small ugrade from the D2x. Nothing spectacular in terms of new technology or features. If I had a D2x, I wouldn't change it. Plus, Nikon will be coming out with firmware that will essentially turn your D2x into the D2xs.

Tell your friend not to worry. The D2x that he has now is a great camera.
