View Full Version : Taking Pictures of the Moon
Edwin Yabut 08-10-2006, 12:52 PM Its been full moon this past few day, and I have been trying to get a good shot of the moon. But in all my pictures the moon turns out too bright. I tried different combinations of shutter and aperture adjustments. Still can't get it. Any tips out there?:) :) :) :)

a shot i took using the nikkor 70-300mm G, f/8 1/300 (or faster) if I remember correctly :)
dinolara 08-10-2006, 01:18 PM Use Sunny 16. That would be 1/125 at iso 100 at f16.
The exposure of the moon itself is the same as the the open field in a sunny day.
Rolando Avecilla 08-10-2006, 01:21 PM I have been using this site (http://home.hiwaay.net/~krcool/Astro/moon/howtophoto/) for my reference...
Norman_P._Aquino 08-10-2006, 01:25 PM Use spot meter if your camera has one. And try shooting the moon when it's not full if you want to see the craters more clearly.
Regards,
Norman
Edwin Yabut 08-10-2006, 01:32 PM You guys are fast. Thanks for the tips. Will try it when the moon comes out again.
Marton_Benitez 08-10-2006, 04:28 PM Took some shots of it last night :) It was beautiful, ill try to post some pics later :)
zandy_marantal 08-27-2006, 04:00 PM A solid tripod would tremendously help.
Earl Gonzalez 08-28-2006, 10:17 AM Okidokee, here's one from me :)

I agree with Dino... a full moon is quite very bright, and a Sunny 16 exposure is a good starting point.
IMHO, there are four main variables in moon shots - focus, exposure, shake control and "seeing conditions".
I always use MF for better accuracy, check my histogram for proper exposure, use MLU/remote switch/good support to tame shake, and shoot when the nightsky is very clear.
Here's a moonshot when the conditions are just right over Paranaque (2263 mm, f/18, ISO 800, 1/100 sec, MLU + remote switch):

Wow! Amazing shot.
That is one big lens you got there. What else do you use it for ? Sightseeing? :D
Earl Gonzalez 08-28-2006, 10:52 AM Thanks Carlo and Zandy. :)
edu_singson 08-31-2006, 02:56 PM Hey Carlo,
Great shots!
What settings did you use for this?
Any filters used?
Comparing with Chewy's photo... the color and definition is really different... But I would think that Chewy's would have more definition since he used a 300 vs your 200... must be the VR.
Did you also do some cropping?
Thanks!
Earl Gonzalez 08-31-2006, 03:55 PM Hi Edu,
I shot at 200mm in HSC mode in the D2X so it's an effective 400mm. Chewy has around 450mm equivalent to his 300mm. The moon seemed close that night when I shot it at the highlands in Shiga Prefecture... mmmmmm... not just the VR but the optics of the 70-200 is simply remarkable. :)
Yup, I cropped... Couldn't get any closer.

Nice shots Romy, checking out your pbase site, kakainget. would love to take pictures of birds also. but my longest lense now is my nikon 70-210. Don't think its enough...
randy_bautista 09-03-2006, 02:23 AM I seem to have the worst luck in trying to get moon shots... past few weeks, every time I've gone out to attempt it, it's either cloudy, raining, pointless (new) or I just can't find the darned thing...
chewy, nice shots!
tj_parpan 09-03-2006, 08:31 PM Took these last night. D200 with a Tamron 200-500mm lens and 1.4x TC.

I have got to try that one of these days.

Even I was surprised with the quality of the pic! I had the false hope of being able to stack my Nikon 2X TC and my Kenko Teleplus 1.4XTC for greater reach, but the ends of both TCs are incompatible. Do Nikon TCs stack?

Yes. But you would have to modify it.

Amiel_Mercado 09-04-2006, 12:48 PM how about canon teleconverters? Can you stack them?
Nice shot of the moon :)
jerome pagunsan 09-04-2006, 01:37 PM Great shots, Its hard to get that kind of shot in this part of the world. When summer is over, no more sand storms and perfect timing i will grab my 70-300 and try again. I dont have a good result previously though.
Earl Gonzalez 09-04-2006, 04:02 PM Really nice moon-shots TJ. :)
tj_parpan 09-04-2006, 05:57 PM Amiel, Jerome, Earl, thanks!

Thanks Terry. I had a few Kirin beers that night so it helped me forget about being lazy setting up for the shot... :D
