Jo Avila 06-24-2007, 10:51 PM I had a wonderful afternoon today. I was at home from lunch till about 3pm. My kids and I watched TV. I took a short nap with my wife. But a bit after 3pm I left the house and headed for Antipolo Church (about 7 minutes away from my house).
Anton Sheker's Horizon Perfekt is still with me. I had four rolls of Kodak TMY and a Sekonic lightmeter in my pocket. I spent about an hour just walking around the church and the parking. I shot everything I deemed worthwhile to capture within the 120 degree view of the Horizon Perfekt.
http://shop.lomography.com/horizon/perfekt/
I didn't have to worry about focusing since I was shooting with a fixed focus lens. I did have to worry about focusing because the lens would not focus properly on subjects closer than 8 feet.
I might make it a weekly ritual to go to Antipolo Church every Sunday afternoon just to shoot.
The rolls that I used up (three out of four) will be brought to Studio 58 tomorrow for developing and contact printing :D
Cheers!

I know I didn't get mine here. Anton got his unit abroad as well. Jo, what about you, where did you get your unit? I know Lomo's are available locally. But I still have to see a swing lens like the Horizon 202 being sold in Manila.

The shots have been developed and contact printed. Nothing came out from the pinhole camera. So I guess the guard at Powerbooks Greenbelt has the last laugh :D
The rolls I used on the pinhole wasn't a total waste. A few frames were more or less properly exposed. Everything else was wa-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ay underexposed. My estimate for the exposure time was too short. It looks like I have to shoot for longer than 15 seconds (reciprocal failure, here I come :D).
@ Derick
I am using Anton's camera :D Anton ordered his unit through Dek. I might order it also through Dek. I compared the prices that Dek is selling his unit to the quoted price I received while I was in Singapore. The savings amounts to less than P1k.
I might as well have Dek get it for me once I come up with the cash :D
Cheers!

Jo Avila 06-25-2007, 10:43 AM @ Miguel
Isn't P18k the price of the Horizon Kompakt? Or are you referring to a second hand Horizon Perfekt? :D
I've also purchased the Horizon book and a hipshot bag from Dek. The service is okay and reliable.
But the hipshot bag that I got is too small for my Fisheye2. I might just use it for something else.
I'll soon be ordering the 'Rumble In The Fishpond' book from Dek.
Miguel Vecin 06-25-2007, 10:44 AM yes i think the kompact is 18k and the pergect 25k. Whats the diference anyway?
Jo Avila 06-25-2007, 10:50 AM @ Miguel
Helloooo!!!!!! You were the one who told me about the difference! :D I called you up from Singapore while I was in Vivo City. I all set to plunk down my cash (actually, I was going to use my brother-in-law's credit card) for the Horizon Kompakt and you told me to put off the purchase.
The Horizon Kompakt only has one aperture setting and two choices of shutter speeds.
The Horizon Perfekt has an aperture range of f/2.8 to f/16 (whole stop increments) and a shutter speed range of 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250 and 1/500.
Cheers!

Miguel Vecin 06-25-2007, 10:53 AM @ Jo - yeah now I remember...sorry still have a bad case of jet lag :)

Miguel Vecin 06-25-2007, 10:56 AM @Derick - what other kind of films are you waiting for?
Jo Avila 06-25-2007, 10:58 AM Wow! Tri-X! Miguel, let me have some Fomapan!!!!!!!!
Tri-X and Negrapan was my film of choice when I first took up photography.
I used a lot of T400CN for weddings. But Bengy Toda once told me that it would print better if I rated it at EI 200. He was right. :D
Cheers!
Jo Avila
Miguel Vecin 06-25-2007, 10:59 AM My 135 fomapan is still coming since I couldnt bring all the film with me in my hand carry :) Should be here in the next 2 weeks

Jo,
Pity about the pin hole, I was looking forward to seeing you pic's. A mate in the US is doing some good stuff with a Pin hole Holga. Aperture is f215, he sent me this table to judge exposures
f 2.8 f 8 f 16 f 64 f 215

I'm also interested in a swing lens camera but I was wanting one that took 120 film, however these cameras still go for big bucks so I may just go for a Perfect.
Post you images when you get them back.
Mike
MikeDougan 06-25-2007, 11:42 AM Well, that table didn't post very well.
How do you post a table on this forum?
Mike
Jo Avila 06-25-2007, 02:16 PM @ Mike
I will be doing some tests to determine the approximate f/stop of my pinhole. I should be able to come up with my own table soon :D
There is a 120 swing that is being sold. I think the company that produces the Horizon also makes it.
Cheers!
Jo Avila
Miguel Vecin 06-25-2007, 02:34 PM I just use a Holga...for the past 2-3 months...really enjoying film again

Derick_Gamboa 06-25-2007, 02:39 PM There is a 120 swing that is being sold. I think the company that produces the Horizon also makes it.
It is manufactured by KMZ – Krasnogorsky Mekhanichesky Zavod (Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant) – in Krasnogorsk. KMZ is also known for the Zenit and Zorki cameras and is the largest producer of photographic equipment in Russia and the former Soviet countries.

Miguel Vecin 06-25-2007, 02:47 PM the medium format panoramic
Derick_Gamboa 06-25-2007, 02:57 PM You can try the Noblex - http://www.kamera-werk-dresden.de/ this is the first on I found in Norway, and man, sobrang mahal. Its a wel designed camera, and film formats come in various sizes. The one I tested was 135 and 120 fillm formats.
If only for the price, I'd get my self instead a Hasselblad 30mm lens. Hasselblad recently announced an additional lens to compliment the standard duo (45mm & 90mm), a super-wide 30mm f5.6 aspherical (a technical word that translates into excellent optics and BIG bucks!). I haven’t seen one of these in person, but since it carries a price tag of nearly $3000 (U.S.), I can’t imagine that too many people will be queuing up to order one. The Noblex price tag was not far from that.

I oonly have the 45mm. My dream is the 30mm. :)

Straight Jackets are optional. I've a freezer full of film, close to 500 rolls or 120's and 135's, most of it fresh as well but I do buy any expired film that comes up for sale. YKL are selling of tons of expired film just now for silly prices.

I've considered the X-Pan, can't get much better than a Hassie after all! but as you point out the accessory's are a little expensive! I also have a thing for a Fuji 6x19, I've seen a few on E-Bay go for a couple of thou.... Miguel Vecin 06-25-2007, 08:10 PM @ Pilar - those pics were taken some 20 years ago with my Nikon FM2 and ilford film which I proicessed and printed. I just re-scanned them again recently.
Yes I ate in El Bulli. My whole experience in El Bulli is explained in my blog. It explains how it took me 3 years to make a reservation in that restaurant. :) The food is not traditional food but very interseting as you can see in the pictures :).
In my blog I explain in detail how the 38 dishes were served. :)

Widelux Panaoramic Model F-8 USD 1,700.00 - Literally to die for!:)
The first Widelux camera appeared in 1948 – almost 50 years ago. With a half century experience, Widelux offers the best panoramic cameras in the world. With an F2.8 lens, the Widelux cameras are faster than any other panoramic camera at any price. The Widelux camera body is made of a light weight metal construction, and the Widelux size is the same as a standard 35mm camera. The 35mm Widelux F8 weighs only 30 ounces, and the 2¼ size Widelux Model 1500 weighs in at a mere 62 ounces. The 35mm Widelux F8 offers a 140° view while the Widelux Model 1500 has an outstanding 150° angle. With all Widelux cameras, you get a full view in the viewfinder and you see exactly what the Widelux camera gets, whereas on many other panoramic cameras you get only a partial view in the viewfinder. No focusing is needed with the high resolution F2.8 fixed focus lens on these Widelux cameras.
My brother-in-law has this. I'm being extra nice to him. he's 83 years old

Widepan 6*17 2300 UK pounds!
The Widepan WP617-A is a surprise entry into the panoramic arena, well priced and well finished; it offers a good introduction to 6x17, particularly after the demise of the much loved Fuji GX617. It is a fixed lens model, equipped with a dedicated 90mm Super Angulon lens, and offers indexed film transport with both 120 (4 exp) and 220 (8 exp) film. The WP617-A is precision machined from solid 6061 Aluminium, has smooth helical focusing and is equipped with an integral shutter release button and hotshoe accessory shoe. It is supplied with a matching viewfinder with internal spirit levels, and comes with an alloy storage case.An optional focusing screen is available, as is the matched optional Schneider Centre Filter which is necessary to correct for illumination fall off at the edges of the field.
Derick_Gamboa 06-26-2007, 05:52 AM Now if you want to get back at me. This is the camera!! This is my reference, top of the heap DOG!

Noblex 150UX
The "Rotating" lens panoramic camera system, offering man's natural visual perspective; utilising a precise electronic drive system the Noblex camera gives superb picture quality. Unlike other rotating panoramic cameras the Noblex offers straight forward multi-exposure for brilliant interior shots requiring long exposures. Based on a rigid die cast alloy housing they are tough and strong.
http://www.pbase.com/manilaman04/image/81159931/original.jpg
Noblex 135UC
The rotating lens design of Noblex cameras gives a unique look to your pictures and while they can take a bit of getting used to once tamed they can be used to give your subject matter a new look. One of the beauties of the Noblex camera is that it can be so easily used for a wide variety of subjects …architecture, portraits, even sport and still life and of course landscapes. If you need some inspiration or an example of what you can do with a swing lends camera you could do a lot worse than get hold of a copy of Jeff Bridges' book 'Pictures'. OK, so you probably won't get to take behind the scenes shots of Michelle Pfeiffer putting her lipstick on but it provides great inspiration to try one these swing lens cameras and shows that there is more to panoramic photography than landscapes.
Life is too short. I am looking for one. A complete set will hit you roughly Pesos 150k. Miguel, Mike, Jo and Anton my friend if you are reading, this is the camera for me.:Angry:
Miguel Vecin 06-26-2007, 07:01 AM @Derick - buy it na...so we can drool over it :)

Jo Avila 06-26-2007, 11:12 AM @ Derick
The title of this thread is 'Left to Right'.
I am repeatedly moving my head back and forth from left to right each time I read one of your pricey gear suggestions. :D
Derick_Gamboa 06-26-2007, 11:15 AM Miguel, Mike, Jo, - The only limit is your imagination my friends...........and money pala.:D:D
Jo Avila 06-26-2007, 11:20 AM @ Derick
It's the money and practicality that is stopping me.
I enjoy using the Horizon Perfekt because it is relatively unobtrusive - especially when compared to the Seitz!
I can't imagine doing candid and spontaneous panoramic shots with the Seitz :D
Cheers!
Jo Avila
Miguel Vecin 06-26-2007, 11:22 AM The 360 degree one..is that the one you mentioned that Bengy toda had??
Miguel, Mike, Jo, - The only limit is your imagination my friends...........and money pala.:D:D

Derick_Gamboa 06-26-2007, 11:25 AM With the Roudshot, its left to left!! ha ha ha ha!!
True, I've seen and held all these in Norway, and I tell you, i'll stick to what I have. Now, if the opportunity to afford one come along, believe me, I will!!! :)
Derick_Gamboa 06-26-2007, 11:26 AM Yup. Bengy has a Roundshot.
Cheers!
Jo Avila
Yes, that's the one he was offering to me. But it was a nikon mount. And man, roughly USD 2000 for the unit he has.
Miguel Vecin 06-26-2007, 11:28 AM @Jo - when are we going to see your shots with the horizon perfekt?
Jo Avila 06-26-2007, 11:33 AM @ Miguel
As soon as I find the time to get my latest batch or rolls processed and everything else prior to it scanned :D
You can look at the contact prints of everything that I have shot so far :D
Cheers!
Jo Avila
ryanbacosta 06-26-2007, 11:33 AM I had a wonderful afternoon today.
Cheers!
Jo Avila
Sir Jo, did you already get one for yourself? Nice captures! :D

Jo Avila 06-26-2007, 10:35 PM @ Ryan
Nope. Not yet. I'm still saving up for it. Although, I don't think my wife would be against the idea of my getting a Horizon Perfekt for myself.

Brochure said, 4-6 feet, walang focus ring yan! But if you noticed its not bad given I think I was closer. Scanned na yan sir kaya mukhang sharp. It could have been better. I was just new at it then.

Look at the details! Awesome!
Jo Avila 06-26-2007, 11:08 PM @ Derick
Hmmmm... I'll have to do a test with the Horizon Perfekt tha I am using (borrowing :D). The minimum focusing distance seems to be a wee bit further than 4-6 feet.
Cheers!
Jo Avila
Derick_Gamboa 06-26-2007, 11:11 PM Jo, I'll never jump into the others i posted here. It's like going to the Moon. I'll never get there. But it's nice to know it exists! :) Did you see the price tags. Oh man! Even Bengy will never jump into that. He'd rather shoot film, scan, and stitch! cheaper.
Jo Avila 06-26-2007, 11:14 PM @ Derick
If you won't make the jump what makes you think Mike, Miguel and I will? :D
I have a funny Left to Right story to post. Let me just get the film developed and scanned and I will post the photo and the accompanying story.
I'm headed for Studio 58 and DPI tomorrow (after I bring my kids to school, bring my wife to work, sweat it out at the gym, fetch my wife for lunch). I am hopeful that I can finish everything that I want to do within the afternoon.
Cheers!

Jo Avila 06-28-2007, 05:34 PM Sigh... just finished looking at the scans of some of my frames. I was too darn close while I was shooting with the Horizon. What I have are out of focus shots of my family in the foreground against a sharp background.
I just hope my b&w set of Antipolo Church comes out better.
Cheers!

Jill Lejano 07-10-2007, 02:51 PM @ DhonJason, salamat!

Derick_Gamboa 07-10-2007, 04:32 PM Jo/ Miguel - for your consideration......:Grin::Grin::Grin:
NOW AVAILABLE! The NEW Horizon 202S with an added shutter speed of 1/500th second... It's the newest innovation in 35mm panoramic photography. And if that pesky whirring sound of the lens rotating across the film plane kept you from owning one of these photographic phenoms, throw away those ear plugs 'cause the new Horizon 202S is no longer noisy! That's right: the shrill is gone! Quiet AND 1/500th sec.
USD 525.00
My unit it only 1/250th.....
Miguel Vecin 07-10-2007, 05:32 PM @Derick - Can you post a pic or link of it?
Jo Avila 07-10-2007, 11:38 PM @ Derick
I bring my b&w films to Bengy for processing and contact printing. I don't know of anyone who still does it WITH quality and care :D
The Horizon Perfekt is supposed to be quiter than the Horizon 202 and it already has a top shutter speed of 1/500th of a second :D
Cheers!
Jo Avila
Jo Avila 07-11-2007, 11:18 PM I did a bit of online research and confirmed my suspicions. I've been using the Horizon with the aperture usually set to no bigger than f/5.6 (due to the recent dreary weather). That's why my subjects in the foreground have been OOF :D

Derick_Gamboa 08-13-2007, 06:09 PM @Jason - Love the wedding pano's! Did you use a flash for the solo portraits?
@Mon - Yes, if at all you find, either you get to pay a lot, you'll only get a handful, or the specs are totally off. So when I get the opportunity, I get several BW, Chrome and color prints. Just for those special days when you want to go film. :)
Miguel Vecin 08-13-2007, 07:16 PM @ Jo - my stash of film arrived na :)
MikeDougan 08-15-2007, 09:02 PM Is it really hard to get Film in Manila this days specially Slides and B&W films?
Film is actually easy to get in Manila. You just have to know where to get it!
I have 539 rolls of film in the fridge or freezer. Most of that was bought here. Contact YKL directly, they will get anything you want on an order basis. I just got 50 Neopan 135's and 50 Superia 120's last week. Also try Studio 58 for Kodak films.

Mike
Better to keep films in freezer and fridge? HUH? I keep mine in the dry box. OR is that whay you call your fridge/freezer?:Thinking::Thinking:
Miguel Vecin 08-15-2007, 09:05 PM I always keep my film in the fridge (actually its my wine cave - converted into a film depot) he he
MikeDougan 08-15-2007, 09:09 PM Film in the freezer will keep for ever....................
easily 20 years.
In the fridge it will also keep a long time and can be used in 30 minutes or so straight from the fridge. The frozen film I take out the night before I want to use it.
Mike
jason magbanua 08-16-2007, 02:26 AM @Jason - Love the wedding pano's! Did you use a flash for the solo portraits?
For the portraits, we actually used a lowell portable video light. Thanks!

dang, 539 rolls of film? i thought i was crazy for scouring the labs here for hard to find film and stocking them in my ref.
Derick_Gamboa 08-27-2007, 12:42 AM These photos were taken during a weekend golf with buddies, Med & Johnny at the Tagaytay Highlands. The golf was the usual banter coupled with good solid slices or duck hooks. What made it special was, I took my Horizon 202 Panoramic Mechanical Camera along with me. These Photos were taken with a Kodak professional film T400 CN, Process c-41. Scanned, and tweaked in PS, for minor tonal balance. No sharpenning at all. Film is really awesome, and I've been shooting it lately. NOTE: Thanks to Miguel Vecin of Digiprint for the Scanning, and to Bengy Toda for the film processing.

Jo Avila 09-02-2007, 10:55 PM @ Derick
Looks like we both took the same route. I had my rolls of film developed at Studio 58 and sent them to Miguel for scanning.
I already printed some of my shots from the Horizon. I was all set to post them in this thread but I realized that the scanned files were all on my other laptop. AAAAAAAARRRRRRGH!
I'll transfer the files to this laptop and try to post some of them tomorrow.
Cheers!

Erratum:
Headline: Photographers/Lomographers Mugged, Cameras Stolen
An incident happened in a photography EB where a couple of photographers got mugged and their swivel lens cameras were stolen. A victim said
"a girl approached me and asked "DEPEPE???".. Then she just hit me with her Canon AV1 on the head.. when i woke up my horizon was gone". Another
victim Jo Avila said "I saw one of my KAPEPE getting beaten down by this petite lady but before i could do anything she hurled her metal camera
to my head and knocked me down... after that i couldn't find my swivel baby.
We found out that the suspect was a petite chinese girl who was wearing glasses and had lots of cameras and films with her. If you got information
about the suspect contact Otep Benavides or Daniel Go...

Headline....
Lagi syang maraming dalang camera at film. Pag inyong nakita wag lapitan dahil siya'y nangangagat...
Kung meron kayong nalalaman tungkol sa babaeng ito ipagalam kay Otep Benavides o kay Daniel Go, para madisiplina...

leesandiego 04-11-2008, 04:13 PM Erratum:
If you got information
about the suspect contact Otep Benavides or Daniel Go...
there you go... not as good as the original:Thinking:

daniel go 04-11-2008, 04:31 PM Here is an approximate translation of what Lee posted. ( sorry Lee I didn't know yo did your own translation already, anyway I took the liberty of translating it almost word for word hahaha)
Headline …. Photographers Badly Beaten Up, Cameras Stolen.
According to one of the victims whom we shall hide under the name Derick… “ A lady approached me and asked DEPEPE?? Before I could answer her, she hit me in the head with her Canon AV-1 camera…. when I came to, my Horizon was already missing.” We also interviewed another victim who introduced himself as Jo Avila. He said “ I saw my fellow DePePe member beaten up by a lady. Before I could react, she had already also hurled her metal clad slr camera at me…… when I regained consciousness, my Horizon was also missing.”
We found out that the suspect is a petite Oriental looking, bespectacled lady. She is often seen around carrying many cameras and films. If any of you happen to chance upon her, DO NOT approach her as she is known to bite.
Should you or anyone have any information about the suspect please relay them to Otep Benavidez or Daniel Go for appropriate disciplinary actions….

For that, here's a shot of the palace court yard in Copenhagen, Denmark. Scanned in a Nikon Coolscan, and levels adjustment in PS. The the details of the Palace facade, remarkable.
Otep, I need to find out if the new shutter speed will make any remarkable difference on the image. What other features have been added to the new unit?
