View Full Version : Photo Gallery / Posting Images on Threads
nino_carandang 08-08-2006, 10:38 AM We've received a few messages regarding posting images on threads and on the Photo Gallery. Some members saw that their photos are too small or the 100KB limit is to small as well.
Here are some tips to optimize your images to be posted on the Photo Gallery or in threads.
1. Make sure your images are at most 800 pixels wide. You may check your image size in Photoshop by going Image>Image Size. Resize to 800 pixels width, and make sure that Constrain Proportions is checked.
2. Go to File>Save for Web and choose the appropriate settings for Photoshop to save your image to yield 100KB or less.
Hope this helps.
Also, images that were uploaded using an alias or fake name will not be approved.
Francis Perez 08-08-2006, 10:55 AM what dpi should be used for web uploads? 300 or 72?
Rolando Avecilla 08-08-2006, 10:57 AM I use 300...

nino_carandang 08-08-2006, 10:58 AM 72 is sufficient.
nino_carandang 08-14-2006, 12:03 PM Make sure that the settings in Photoshop's Image Size are: a.) 800 pixels wide, b.) 72 dpi, c.) Bicubic Sharper if DOWNSIZING, Bicubic Smoother if UPSIZING.

Play around the Quality setting in the Save for Web Dialog Box to reach a size of 100KB.

PS. Changed MAX width to 800px. Happy sharing!

mario_bes 08-14-2006, 02:58 PM those are great tips nino, how do i post pics on the thread? i tried and when i preview it, it only gives me a link, not the photo itself..
jun_lee 08-14-2006, 03:03 PM What if I want to post panoramic shots? i.e. from a Roundshot Camera
Jeff Vergara 08-14-2006, 03:38 PM mods, can we stretch the file size limit to 150kb-200kb instead of 100kb?
sometimes, my image file size (even save for web at high, 60%), is over 100kb and image quality or dimensions are compensated just to meet up the requirements.
just a thought. thanks!

there's two ways...
one is via linking the photo from a external website... OR
the photo link..

Why use 300dpi if image is only intended for online posting/viewing? Monitors can only simulate 72dpi (screen resolution). The easier way of doing this is by means of simple mathematics... divide your image's pixel dimension by 72 dpi to get actual physical dimension of your image in inches. For example, if you want to display a 9" x 6" image on screen, simply set your image's resolution to 72 dpi with pixel dimension of 648 pixels x 432 pixels. In the Save-for-Web dialog box, select jpeg medium in the quality presets. This should yield a jpeg image file with a size of 60kb only.
Cheers!
Nick Tuason 08-14-2006, 09:14 PM Okay guys lets get this straight. Plenty of confusion about the ideal numbers to use for web. First of all, lets clear the terms PPI and DPI since these are commonly mistaken. Whenever you say DPI this technically means Dots Per Inch which is inkjet printer resolution. It means how many dots per inch of ink is laid down by the printer. For Epson printers this could mean anywhere from 360 dpi up to 5760 dpi.
The proper term is PPI which stands for Pixels Per Inch. The common wisdom is that for Print, resolution should be 300 PPI and for Web it should be 72 PPI. This is half correct. PPI has an effect for print. Print a picture at 72 PPI and you get something that will look pixelated. But what does 72 PPI have to do with video screens? The answer is nothing.
Video screens render images solely on the amount of Pixels. PPI has nothing to do with it. Care to try an experiment. Post three different photos with the same amount of pixels say 600 x 800 pixels at 7 PPI, 72 PPI, and 300 PPI. I bet you they will all look the same on screen. Again, its not the amount of Pixels Per Inch that matters. Its just the amount of Pixels period.
Hope this makes sense to everyone.
Hirap kasi kapag nasanay ka sa imprenta tapos bigla ka lilipat sa web-based publication... dala-dala mo 'yung sukatan na inches or cm not knowing that these units of measurement do not exist at all pagdating sa video screen resolution.
I have to agree on what you've said about pixel as the main ingredient in controlling image size and appearance on screen, it so happened that screen monitors are simply using pixels and not inches. And since digital images are also using pixel as main unit of measure, it would be represented on the video screen as it is (pixel to pixel).
Maraming salamat Nick for the clarifications... 'sensya na kung medyo naguluhan ng konti in my previous post.
Kamusta sa inyong lahat d'yan sa Pilipinas...

arnel_murillo 08-26-2006, 08:33 AM Hi Ryan,
You can do post in a higher quality by saving your images at 72 dpi at a setting of 700 to 800 pixels the wide side of your image then save for web,you will notice your image will then automatically open in another window. then click optimized tab then click button on the lower right corner edit in image ready, your image will then go to image ready window then click again optimized tab then click optimized which you can find in one of the pop out windows where you can changed size of your jpeg file set it to not more than 100kb for directly uploading to dpp forum threads, you can go as high as maximum if your going to do it via attachment. after doing so, click file, save optimized as, that's it your ready to go.
for uploading in dpp, just upload using your 100 kb max file.
For posting as attachment: click post reply then find and click insert image (the yellow button with an image of a mountain i think:) ) this is considering you already have uploaded your image to a host site and have already copied the url link of the image ( goto your host site then right click your image, copy link) then paste the link after clicking insert image. then you can input you comments then hit submit reply.:)
I hope this may help you.

I just found a simpler method for all you OSX Tiger users out there. There is a widget called "Shackle". Download from the apple widget site and install it.
Activate it as a regular widget. All you need to do after this is to drag your selected photo from iPhoto (or folder), pull it down to the hot corner that activates widgets (mine is lower left) and then continue dragging the photo to the widget.
Set your photo dimensions to less than 400x300 pixels, and you will instantly get a file with the same name with a shkl.jpg suffix. This is saved in the same directory as the original photo. I suggest you make a smart folder that will filter out all the ####shkl.jpg files for easy reference and uploading later.
The resulting file will be about 18kb to 39kb depending on the size settings that you will make, well within the limits set by the admins of this site.
Its hard at first, but if you set it the way I did, photo resizing and uploading will be simpler - without the need to open photoshop.
HTH.

ericgonzales 10-27-2006, 01:43 PM I'm just wondering why is it that when i upload a 19kb size photo, its telling me that it exceeds 1.43mb? and it does not allow me to upload. Any suggestions?
ricky_ladia 11-06-2006, 12:40 PM Hey nick, thanks for the info about PPI and DPI
Ria Vallesteros 11-06-2006, 01:38 PM @Eric,
Try to have the image hosted with a site like flickr or imageupload or something, then you can post using a link.
cris_servillas 11-06-2006, 01:46 PM yeah, been seeing small images like thumbnails...

samrosales 06-12-2009, 08:59 AM Being used to linking photos through photobucket or flickr, I didn't know that it was possible to directly load files from your HD unto this site - until I read this thread.
