View Full Version : Alpha Main problem
homer anthony medici 06-11-2007, 07:04 PM Guys have u notice it already..
the rubber grip in our alpha is giving-out..
it happens to almost every alpha users all over the world
specially in humid countries.
right now im planning to either fix it by my self like tearing the rubber then put it back with a epoxy to stick the rubber grip back OR
do u think i should send it to sony service center and let them deal with this problem since i still got 2 1/2 more years in my alpha warranty? wat do u think?
jose_deluna 06-11-2007, 07:14 PM Homer...
Same thing happened to me... Sony service center here in Middle East says it's part of their service warranty. Go bring it to a service center near you and let them see the problem before you do anything else.
Cheers!
Christian Enricuso 06-11-2007, 07:34 PM hehehe same thing happening to my grip but i wouldn't entrust my alpha to the local sony service center. hehehe :D
jose_deluna 06-11-2007, 07:38 PM In case you'll be doing it yourself... make sure to remove rubber grip completely... clean both surfaces (rubber grip and metal/plastic body)... scrape-off glue resins before applying new glue substance... don't use mighty bonds (the plastic portion of the body will melt).
Christian Enricuso 06-11-2007, 07:40 PM KaPepe, what adhesive would you recommend? so far, the grip really isnt much of a problem. i ordered a dicain vertical grip na rin for the alpha due this week so it may take some stress off the main grip.:)
jose_deluna 06-11-2007, 07:49 PM Christian... I'm still looking around what's the best adhesive to use. I made a mistake in using mighty bond... melted portion of the body at the bottom part (made of plastic).
Christian Enricuso 06-11-2007, 07:50 PM hehehe ok. mighty bond... BAD :D
homer anthony medici 06-11-2007, 10:00 PM yup mighty bond wont do good, my friend recommend pioneer epoxy (he tried it on his Canon 20D) i dont what im gonna do, maybe ill send it after my contract in big foot entertainment (movie still photographer) and im planning to get the SLR Armour ---> http://www.camerarmor.com/ (meron ba ganito sa hidalgo?)
Christian Enricuso 06-12-2007, 09:26 AM homer i've read some reviews or comments from people who used the armour. it ended up doing more harm than good. apparently, it caused more scratches on the alpha.
paolo navarrete 06-12-2007, 09:54 AM looks like nikon's pro rubber covered-body problem is contagious!
i had the same problem with my D1. i have sweaty palms and this exacerbated my dilema. you might be able to stick it with glue or rugby or double sided tape but i'll still peel off sooner or later. there were some replacement rubber grips on ebay for the d1 series, there might be for the alpha too. for my d1, the rubber had expanded so after peeling it off and removing the old double sided tape, the expanded rubber grip had to be trimmed carefully and then reattached onto the body withdouble sided tape. the tape you i bought commercially wasn't as strong or stricky as the original but it did stick anyway.
apart from the weight, this is another reason why i have preferred plastic to metal+rubber with camera bodies. if the plastic is slippery and to absorb the sweat, i sometimes wear fingerless gloves.
paolo navarrete 06-12-2007, 09:56 AM i dont what im gonna do
i've seen this happen on a d2x too...
what should you do?
shift to canon, i think that their rubber sticks well and i've never seen or heard of this problem on canon bodies.
or buy a pastic bodied dlsr

Since the Alpha is based on the Minolta Maxxum series, this is a bad thing. Wow, I cannot believe that this problem still persists today... I've owned 4 Minolta Maxxum film SLRs during the late 80s and 90s and ALL of them had this grip "melting" problem. Sony should have just stuck with the rubber they used with the Sony F828, mine has taken alot of beating, and the darn thing still looks like new.
Ivan Ferreras 06-12-2007, 06:39 PM Sony should have made a big impression to lure canon, nikon, olympus, fuji, and etc. SLR users to shift..
