Hi guys,

I'm thinking of getting this lens as my travel lens. Problem is, there seems to be a lack of it here in Philippines. Can anyone please direct me to a shop that sells this lens? I'd also be willing to buy a 2nd hand one in mint condition.

Thanks in advance for your replies guys and more power to this great site!

Are you referring to the G lens? They might have it in Columbia (Megamall), and selling for around 17k

Hi Raffy,

Thanks for the heads-up! I'll check it out. Would this be cheaper in Hidalgo though? And is 17k worth it for this lens? Was thinking of it's price being closer to 13-15k.

Thanks again Bro!

i got mine early this year for about 11k @ mayers... but after a month or so, i heard that the price went up to about 17K. i don't know if they made a mistake with the price or if it was just a "clearance" sale then.

wow chewy... at 11k that sounds like a steal!
they have two silver 28-200's selling at P22.5k over at digital express konica minolta at glorietta facing sm makati.
they also have the 24-120 VR at P35k
and while you're at it, check out the camera store at the ground floor of landmark facing park square 2 parking.... not sure if they have the 28-200 but saw a 24-85 f/2.8-

Chewy:

I think Voodoo also mentioned that the price was 11-12k before but shot up to 15-16k nowadays.

Manny:

Thanks for the tips bro. I'll check them out too but I think I may have found one in mint condition. Thanks again!

Hi, Alexis.

Sorry wasn't able to reply. We're you able to find one already? I can't answer on the part of the Hidalgo prices (I got mine second hand lang).

This is a very good lens, and the only drawback I see is that its autofocus is a bit slow at times; but depending on your usage it's a good lens. If you're planning to use it as a travel lens, this will be a good choice.

Hi Raffy,

Yup, I was able to find one na but will only get it later this week. Heard about the slow autofocus and that worries me a bit but based on the reviews naman on picture quality, I think its a good compromise.

I'll update you on this "project". Good luck in finding your 18-200mm btw! Ganda ng lens na yan!

hi alexis, i know you've seen this set before, but here it is again for everyone's review. http://www.flickr.com/photos/chewychua/sets/72157594177751194/

all my shots taken with the 28-200mm. It's not that quick, but when you're travelling, most of the subjects you're focusing on aren't moving quickly naman, right? Reviewing some shots makes me wonder if this was a better lens optically than the 18-200mm VR...

Hi Chewy,

Your photos actually made me decide to get this lens instead of the Sigma 18-200mm. I agree with you on the quality of the 28-200mm lens.

Most of my photos are portraits naman and if I need action shots ( basketball games, shooting competitions and bike rides ) I use my trusty 50mm1.8. I really can't comment yet on the 18-200mm VR but I'll get the chance to do so come August 20 - my Dad's bringing back one from Singapore!

I'll make a comparo between the two and see which lens wins out.

Guys,

Seems that I'm still looking for a good 2nd hand 28-200mm Lens. Previous deal didn't push through so if you hear about one being sold, I'd really, really appreciate it if you could post the details here.

I don't think I can afford to get one brand new ( Dindin offered me one at a good price and I still have the 18-200mm VR and the SB600 - arriving in 10 days - to worry about! ) though I'm trying to see if my wife won't notice the dip in our accounts! Hehehehe.

I'll be in Manila till Sunday so hopefully, I'd be able to find one by then.

Thanks in advance for the help guys!

Alexis

Hi Alexis! I was just wondering, why need a 28-200G when you're getting the 18-200VR in 10 days? (btw, it was frustrating for me coz i was ready to buy the 28-200G after the day I asked and the price just went up, clearance sale daw - voodz)

Hi, Alexis.

I agree with Dexter, too. Wouldn't your lenses be overlapping with the incoming 18-200VR?

Hi, Dexter.

Did you eventually get the 28-200G that you mentioned?

Regards to all
:)

Hi Raff! no -- i personally can't accept the fact that I can't get the 28-200G for 12K when I had the chance to do so. argh! lucky are the few I knew who did. hahaha! but that lens was realy on the top of my list for travel.

I had the older version of this lens... it was my only lens for 4 years and it served me well... its built was really good and the bokeh was nice.

Hi Guys,

Hehehehe, yup, I also got that question from my wife and most recently from Dindin. I go on bike trips a lot and also on shooting competitions so I need a lens that won't be needing "special attention".

I also am impressed enough with the pictures of the 28-200mm, enough to somehow convince me to get one for the purposes mentioned above.

Also, I've heard that parang maselan yung 18-200mm ( correct me if I am wrong please ) and parang I don't want to test the limits of it's durability considering the cost of the lens.

Oh well, I might as well look around na lang while I'm here ( Hidalgo, here I come ) and see if I could find a good deal. If not, then ( deep breath ) the 18-200mm VR lens would have to be put to the test. Don't get me wrong though, I'm sure the picture quality is great too, if not even better than the 28-200mm but I'm really worried about it's durability. I don't want to be thinking "Is the lens ok?" while in mid-corner on my R6 or while shooting IPSC boards during competitions.

Well, life's an adventure naman di ba? So we will see. If Lady Fortune does smile at me on the next few days, I might find a mint condition 28-200mm lens somewhere or better still, I might grow a money tree and get lots of moolah from it!

Yeah,...... and pigs might be flying around too!

Thanks anyway for the tips guys! I'll be keeping you updated regarding this.

Dindin,

I had the opportunity to use the older model, too. I agree with you, very good lens. It's with my dad now. :)

I like this lens. I use it a lot to shoot my son's football games. It is a little slow at the shorter focal lengths but it speeds up dramatically at 200. Fast enough to catch the action.

A lot of value for money!

Still dreaming of the 18-200 VR......

I tried the older model... here are some pics http://dom08.multiply.com/photos/album/121 heheh.. ^_^ (although there are 3 or 4 photos where i used a 35-105 macro MF i don't know the brand though, these are the ones with really small dof)

just borrowed from a friend, how i wish i could get one of these for a cheap value...

one thing i don't like about this (the older version) is the focus distance (depends on the focal length, the longer the length, the farther i have to move back starting from .5/1 m i think) is this fixed on the newer version?

good day sirs and maam's
i am still using one, the G model, though still mounted on my film camera, i believe its definitely worth the money, i got it used but in brand new condition for a nice price, alas i will be letting it go as i need the funds to switch to digital, also it will no longer give me the wide angle i love...

it still needs special attention though, specially while the lens is extended...

I bought one of these a year ago for 13k, i can tell you this lens is worth every peso you spend for it, even if it's 6k more. One peuliar characteristic about this lens is it's effectivity at extremeley close range, the minimum focal distance on the lens is supposed to be 1.5ft but on a DX body, the minimum distance is really about 1ft away giving an almost 1:1 magnification at 200mm. This lens is also really durable, I dropped it one time at the Batangas Racing Circuit on hot asphalt and cracked it on the plastic body but the glass was still A OK, funny thing was it was so hot that the glue didn't have a chance to dry before i set it back. :D

Definitely N-E-V-E-R selling this lens.... EVER!

Peace!

so it seems the G version is better than the old one (the one i borrowed. heheh)

wishing i could find one, and at the same time have money to buy it.
