Hi just wondering what's your favorite lens during a wedding shoot? :)
hi guys..well my favorite all around lens is a 24-300mm 3.5-5.6 IS L lens. its a very good all around lens which has the near and far virtues. candids with this lens is really a smash.

used to enjoy using the 28-135 for wedding shoots... now i'm having fun using 50 f/1.8 , 70-200 4L, and the kit lens for the wide shots:Grin:... i may buy the sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 to replace the kit lens pretty soon... will aim for the 24-70 and other fast canon lenses someday:)

film - sigma 28-104 (2.8-4) used 99% if not 100% of the time.

digital - sigma 18-125 (3.5-5.6), sigma 70-200 (2.8), sigma 24 (2.8).

This is a real eye-opener for me. I thought wedding photographers usually use "PRO" lenses with constant f2.8 appertures. But based on the initial response MOST of the lenses used were variable apperture lenses...

Is this because almost all the time there is that big light source used by the videographers (I think) or is it because you guys always use flash?

Video lights really help but I'm guessing that it may be a function of economics. Sigma 18-125 would be enough and will produce great results. It's also easy to recover and very light.

sir,

i noticed a number of sigma 18-125 users. is this a better quality lens than the zoomier 18-200 version. its cheaper din diba? almost same speed lang din yata. thanks for the insights.

I think the range above 125 from 18-200 Sigma is not much useable because of 6.3 aperture. Although, you can get better macro with 18-200.

It's cheaper by around P5K.

I only have my Nikon Kit lens 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G (never gets used during a wedding), Nikon 50mm f/1.8, Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro Super II. When I cover weddings I rent a 17-55mm f/2.8 for $35 a pop which is on my D70 almost the entire time. I still couldn't afford to buy the lens, which I think costs more than $1,200.

I want to try the Nikon 12-24mm f/4, too for fisheye shots. I haven't done any of those kinds of shots yet. (If I get this I'll be renting the 28-70mm f/2.8 lens instead of the 17-55mm f/2.8, please see my follow-up question below.) This is still out my price range, but can be rented again for another $35 a pop. Darn these rentals, it eats up a lot of my profit. Anyone used this lens yet? How is it? I don't want to waste my $35 if it's not good.

Thanks.

Question:

Is the 4mm difference going to be an issue? I am asking because this is going to happen if I rent the 12-24mm and the 28-70mm. I won't have the focal length between the 28mm and the 24mm.

i use the Canon 24-70 2.8 on my 350D and the 70-200 2.8 IS on the 30D.
i remember when i was trying to venture into wedding photog, i thought i should get the L lenses and a good DSLR para di naman ako mapahiya sa mga clients at fellow photogs. then when i went to my first wedding shoot (syempre, 2nd team lang at libre pa), i saw them lenses (sigmas, tamrons...). na-realize ko ok naman pala siguro kahit ano basta big apertures. now nakita ko dito ok kahit ano bast yun ang nabili nila.
maybe i was just putting too much on my standards. na-recall ko yung kuwento sa 'kin ng one of the most famous photogs in our country re a famous wedding photog also here in our country. the client ask daw what cameras he wields - is/are they the 1D series daw ba. reply ng wedding photog: mam, kung bumibili ba kayo ng mga furniture, inaalam niyo pa ba kung saan gawa ang mga pako, martilyo, etc...
the wedding photog has a good point di ba? the moral is, after all is said and done, nasa photographer yan.
ayun, he lost the client. :)

@Marco : You can cover the 4mm difference by zooming with your feet. IMHO, the 12-24 is a tad soft compared to, say, the 17-35 and 28-70. These are my lenses for weddings but I don't shoot with them all at the same time:

10.5
12-24
16
17-35
28-70
80-200

Consider yourself lucky that you can rent them for just $35 a pop -- that way, you can have a 'new' perspective every time. :) I wonder how much they rent out the 200/2 for - $35 din? Can I send you my credit card number? :)

These two lenses are fixed in the two Nikon cameras I am carrying. They cover most of my requirements during a wedding from taking a tight or a wide shot. The only time i replace the lens is when I put in the fish eye lens.

The photog has a legit point and this story is amusing. :) I think aside from the photog, the lay-out/graphic artist also plays a very significant role in the final process.
