View Full Version : Re-evaluating my options at this point...

Well, I've come to the point that my work's starting to swamp my free time, so I don't have as much time for photography. :(

That said, I don't really want to have a great camera like my K10D gathering dust in the corner. It's just not right.

I'm thinking of downgrading to a K100D or maybe an *ist Ds even, as I saw Camerahaus still has new Ds'es in stock. Thoughts?

I've read in other forums about how they're still very much happy with their Ds, but then I think I've fallen for Pentax's SR system. My concern now is metering with old lenses, which I've read the Ds is good at. What about the K100D? :)

Sir Bong, Sir Vic, Sir Joey, and whoever else is interested, let's get together sometime and shoot, with me having a new baby in tow. :)

Oh, and maybe someone would like to get my K10D, you know where to find me. :)

Hi Vince,

It's your free time...you say "when" we get together and shoot.

The thread I started on the DS and manual focus shows my bias for the DS but you lose shake reduction. I guess you have to have a hands on with the K100D to see how it really handles manual metering.

Bong
PS My friend is still iffy about your K10D--1) he still hasn't gotten his cash and 2) he needs convincing :)

haha, no problem sir Bong. i guess the K100D is as good as the Ds with regards to manual lens metering? :)

Hi Vince,
If I were you I'm going to keep it,I own both cameras, the *istDs serves as my workhorse and the K10D for portraits.
THere really comes a time when you loose interest in photography because of workload and other factors but time will come babalik din yan.
It happened to me during the film era, during the latter part of the '90s ayoko na, but things changed later on.

I second victor's comments. Keep the K10D. Maybe you can incorporate a little photography in your work. Cheers!

vince,

just got me this evening a petri 135mm/2.8 screw mount lens from quiapo. P500 only. comes with a pentax k-mount adapter and a 55mm filter. the adapter alone is worth more than the price i paid for the lens.

anyway, my k10d meters fine. and i was playing with the petri before i logged on tonight.

don't get rid of your k10 just yet. let's meet after june 12 and see how we can solve your manual lens metering issue.

bong, pare, can we meet vince next sunday, june 3? baka matagalan siya sa after june 12 target natin.

@Vince--I replied to your original post/question re the DS vs K100D without doing some hard thinking with the implications on the K10D. We all know that its way cheaper than its comparative Canon or Nikon model, so if you're thinking of P70-80k worth of camera sitting idly...yeah you're right its a bad waste of money; sell it and downgrade to a 400D or a D40x. The K10D is not a expensive investment and thus even if all you shot was your new born baby, it is worth it. I'd say keep it; kita tayo ni Joey and we'll help you sort out your metering problem.

@Pastor Joey--(Vince too!) Game ako June 3...I suppose after church 'no? :D

vince, just tell us where to meet. pwede din sa megamall pentax.

actually, it's not the manual lens metering that's bugging me. it's just that i need the cash since my friends and i would wanna start a business. i'm trying to sort out stuff that i could sell first, since i don't wanna resort to loaning money.

once we get the thing off the ground, i'll be sure to get another Pentax. i've been reading on other forums that there are new models around the corner (models that probably would show up in time for Christmas, maybe). :)

sir Bong, how's the progress with your friend? i'm open to counter-offers and whatnot. :)

I am at the verge of purchasing a K10D, but I am having second thoughts because it is quite a sum of money... I am thinking of maybe getting a K100 na lang, since I am just a hobbyist and will use the camera during gigs and whenever I am out of town... Any suggestions? Thanks!

For me it's still the K10D,it has a well constructed body and unlike other brands the battery is so efficient!

If money is a problem, well...a Pentax is a Pentax

The K10D is the top of the line and the holy grail of Pentaxians but that shouldn't make you feel like a second class citizen just because you ended up with something "lesser." Apart from the fact that my budget would not allow me to upgrade to a K10D, I have not had the compulsion to move up from my *ist DS as of yet. Works for me...even in pro shoots. The K100D should be more than robust for a hobbyist.

The K100D is great camera for hobbyists. Smaller, runs on AAs and has cleaner pics at higher ISOs.

You can save the 15k price difference and spend it later on something useful, maybe a lens or flash. The K10D has many advantages in terms of build and features but for this type of use (gigs and travel), I think the K100D advantages would be very useful -- smaller size / lighter weight, AA batteries easily available and low-light image quality.

Franz,

Did we exchange notes on manual focus somewhere else? Because if you're into MF lenses, you might actually consider the *ist DS (see the thread here (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=6169)).

Otherwise, as most have been affirming, go with the K100D!

Wow, thanks for the replies!

So it's more practical for me to get a K100 rather than the K10? My wife will be happy when she hears this! :D... she's planning to get me a K10D, but with money getting harder to come by each day, I'm feeling a little guilty which is why I'm considering getting a less expensive model.

Bong, yep. We had a conversation regarding my old manual lens (which I have yet to have cleaned). I'm thinking the K100 over the *ist DS because of the shake reduction system... my hands are not as steady as they used to...

Franz - - You already have the budget for a K10D....why not get a K100D and spend the difference on a good lens?

@Jaime: I've still got a good stock of old lens (lenses?) from my old Pentax, though full o' mold and haven't tested them recently... I'm slowly thinking about the K100 now, thanks to all your replies... but haven't finalized on my decision yet though... esep esep...

Aside from knowing the technical facts and weighing all the pros and cons I suggest that you go to your nearest Pentax dealer and compare the two cameras,as you go on with photography I'm sure that your interest will not be limited on snapshots only.

Thanks for all your replies, insights, suggestions... I went and compared, and got the K100! Though of course the K10D is a mighty fine camera, I thought to myself, maybe after I have proven myself worthy enough for such fine equipment will I consider upgrading to the K10D... in the meantime, the K100 will do just fine! Thanks again!
