View Full Version : Advice on Camera Purchase
Stanley_Diongco 08-02-2006, 02:56 PM :Scared: Hi guys,
As my previous posts, i've always said i only do retouching. Well i've been considering getting a camera and shoot my own photos to retouch.
What troubles me is, do I get those cameras you professionals use or just get an 8megapixel point and shoot one first? I don't want to invest in such a huge amount of money then later on find out I don't have the talent on shooting.
Any suggestions? Mr. Nick?
Stan
JonDexterTan 08-02-2006, 03:12 PM Most 8MP P&S camera prices are right up there with the Nikon D50 kit and Olympus E-300 kit. You can't go wrong with a bigger sensor -- surely better than getting an 8mp p&s with a small sensor. Those two also have auto modes. Just in case you just want to er, point and shoot. :D
nino_carandang 08-02-2006, 09:00 PM megapixel is no longer the issue here. sensor size is. a P&S camera has a small sensor while most DSLRs have sensors way bigger than that of a P&S. small sensors have the tendency of producing more noise (whether luminance or color noise) since you have to cramp up information into a dinky small sensor. while on DSLRs, they have bigger sensors that can accept more information. comparing results, 8MP P&S versus 8MP DSLR, in large prints (with or without post processing), you'd see (in my experience) a signifact loss of detail (especially sharpness) in prints made with the 8MP.
dodie_legaspi 08-02-2006, 09:05 PM get a dslr, kahit slightly used. a brand new dslr d70s /350d is affordable and yes near the prices of an 8megapixel p&s. a dslr has a larger sensor thus less noise. u dnt experience shutter lag, and u hav more flexibility. will cost u more thoug in the long run cuz u wont get satisfied w 1 lens. (GAS, GASTOS) there are more reasons why a dslr, if u dnt hav the cash now, save up for it. u wont go wrong!
dodie_legaspi 08-02-2006, 09:06 PM u wont go wrong w a dslr. go for it. !!!happy shopping! and be prepared for more GAS! (gastos) eheheheheeh
Pilar Tuason 08-02-2006, 10:08 PM defenitly an slr!! there is no reason for not choosing an slr. if budget is an issue, then get a second hand. especially since you are into retouching, i am pretty sure that you will be interested in beauty and fashion photos. All the more reaon for an SLR
ryan_tanganco 08-02-2006, 11:50 PM how about the so called "prosumer" cams? good or not good?
JonDexterTan 08-03-2006, 07:13 AM there are prosumer P&S and prosumer dSLR cams. both are good, running along the boundary line there. :D the smallest diff (if none at all) is the price.
Derick_Gamboa 08-03-2006, 08:53 AM I see two schools of thought; since you're into retouching, get the top end P&S. I think this will help you decide if you're seriously going to pursue photography on a more serious note. The second is if you're getting a pre-owned DSLR, and decide its not for you, you'll be stuck with a preowned unit as a secondary market , chances are, would be 2nd or 3rd tier models. Just may have to take a slight lost, if you resell it. A good P&S will always be handy. There are days you just want a small, unobstrusive unit that shoots decently. Believe me, even if you get serious, you'll still keep the small P &S.

Agree ako diyan. But a top end PS would cost him as much as a entry level DSLR, right?
dindin_lagdameo 08-03-2006, 08:58 AM Go for the dSLR... more value for money (higher resale value)... bigger sensor... more flexible (you can use a wide variety of lenses: not necessarily buy them)...

Yes, but chances are, brand new, top tier current model, versatility on the focal length, easier learning curve, wife will be able to use it, so with growing kids........as oppose to DSLR, pre owned, 2nd/3rd/tier model (kasi pre-owned) versatility subject to new lens purchase.................. but at the end of the day, it was a suggestion for a hobby path.:) Hey, if money is No object, get the brand new PS & a pre owned DSLR.
You know what you need and want to get out of it, you have a working budget, get a camera by determining what's a "must have" and the "nice to have". Its easy to drown in this hobby, the bug bites bad!!

ok sir derick. but given the existence of a wife, wife no touch camera. lol. whether PS or DSLR. bug bites bad as you've said, plunk down some serious savings already. something that stanley should seriously consider. there is no end to the bug.

ha ha ha :D you think ecstasy is a drug? This bug bites worse:D Be careful!!!
On a side note; I have 5 kids, and all of them shoot. I have 4 units of P&S that have have purchased over time. I still used all of them. My kids use them in school projects; a JVC (Fuji OEM) 1.2MP; Olympus C3030z 3.3 mp; Canon Ixus-i 4.0 MP; I-xus 55 Mp.
But JAM's right, the wife and kids do not touch the serious "babies"
christopher cortez 08-03-2006, 10:50 AM 55 mp??? i seriously need that P&S lol....just kidding.
Vince_Villamin 08-03-2006, 02:11 PM A top of the line P&S is can not equal even an entry level DSLR. I have a Powershot Pro1 with a supposedly L class lens but still a 300D with the kit lens beats it for quality most of the time. The only exception might be when you need very deep DOF and only at ISO 50 and for MACRO work (again only at ISO 50-100). Other than those very specialized bits a DSLR is faster, much more forgiving in terms of DR and latitude, it is more flexible giving you options to upgrade your lens, speedlight, etc... I find that ISO 200 on the Pro 1 is noisy approx the same amount of noise as ISO 1600 on a DSLR, forget about shooting at ISO 400.
martin_cp_valeriano 08-03-2006, 05:14 PM oo nga... dslr na lang :) nasabi na lahat.. so vote na lang ako
:))
Oggie Ramos 08-03-2006, 05:30 PM my two cents worth - each one has a place in your camera bag. i've very recently upgraded to d-slr pero i'm not parting with my cp 5100. nosiree! there will be times when lugging around a big camera/camera bag will be a liability (e.g. mainit sa mata or impractical) so the teeny-weeny p&s comes in handy. but when it comes to flexibility (low-light conditions, high-speed action), hands-down choice ang slr. as the earlier posts suggest, if you can afford both, why not? if not, choose the one that fits your needs :-D

Sau_Potonia 08-03-2006, 05:59 PM It's an easy choice, go DSLR, cause you already used P&S now try the Single Lens Reflex... I'm a Canon user but I suggest that you should try the New Oly with Live-View feature which enables you to preview pic compositions on the LCD.

Noli_Gabilo 08-04-2006, 03:26 AM Hi Stanley,
Get a point and shoot. It's a lot easier to use than a digital slr. Shoot JPEG right. That will be fine. Good luck.

IMHO, you're better of with a dslr when it comes to re-sale time. Dslr's hold their value a little while longer than p&s cameras.
