By using nothing less than 50mm was the perfect lens choice, given you were using PS7. Had you used more specialized panoramic/stitching sw, that would have allowed you wider lenses.

Have you tried panoramic heads? The whole point of using special heads for panorama pictures, is that you want to take pictures with generous overlap (35-45%) where the position of the entry pupil does not move between the shots. Vignetting only shows up in the corners, and you don't use that part of the images - they overlap.

Some materials i've read talk extensively about distortion. Perhaps what they meant in the statement might be correct if you only use photoshop to stitch pictures. But who wants to use a process that painful? (kasi di ako marunong he he he) The real panorama stitchers will correct for lens distortions, even fisheye lenses.

I like your output.

Thanks so much Derick for viewing. . . I used a tripod and an improvised panoramic head when I took a series of 10 pictures for this image. My 28-105mm lens was set at 50mm focal length to minimize distortions. I patiently worked on my computer using Photoshop 7 for about 6hrs. to seamlessly stitch this panoramic. The original image size is 8" by 74", about 96 MB filesize in TIF (8-bit mode). I got it printed in Island Photo last May 2006. Now, I'm having a problem on how can have it framed. I can't find a large matting for the said size here in my place. . .

Thanks Marton, it was really a lot of work. So much precision, patience and passion involved. . . I've tried some panoramic (automatic) stitching softwares, but was never satisfied with the output. . . There's no real substitute for Adobe Photoshop, in this kind of work, so far.

There's a substitute for PS. NO PS. Use a Panoramic Camera:Grin:

Oh yes, of course you can always use a panoramic camera to shoot for panoramic pictures. Nice shot, Sir!. . . But what I was supposed to say was that there's no better option for stitching panoramic images other than using Adobe Photoshop. I was never satisfied with the output I got from using some automatic stitching softwares (maybe, that's just for me).

Cheers,

Nice shot(s) Jeoffrey. Was also at Lingayen Pangasinan last April just a few days before the Pistay Dayat festival. Facing the beach we stayed at the leftmost side far away from the hut and practically had the beach all for ourselves :)

not to hijack this thread but this is a similarly stitched panoramic shot where i used acrsoft panorama maker 3. this is a series of 3 landscape shots taken with a panasonic lumix fz20 @ 35mm on tripod.

Yes. My dad grew up in Lingayen and they lived in this big two-storey house just beside Lingayen tech. My late grandfather came from Dagupan. But it has been more than twenty years since I've been to Lingayen, until I came back just last April.

Beautiful shot too, Manny. . . One main problem I encountered using such panoramic stitching softwares, is the inaccurate blending of the pictures being stitched. As for my sample image, even though I set my camera exposure & the white balace into manual mode, because of the rapid changes in the ambient light during that early morning there was a color/exposure variation from picture to picture (though it took me only about 20 seconds to capture for those 10 shots). Using those automatic stitching softwares I was unlucky to have a seamless and smooth stitched panoramic like yours. That's why I always use Photoshop for my panoramic images.

I'm so happy to meet a photographer-kababayan like you, Sir. . . I'm just a hobbyist learning lots of photography stuffs from the forums in this site. . .

As promised, I attached pictures of my improvised panoramic head;

image A is my improvised sliding plate; image B is my sliding plate as mounted on tripod using a wing nut; image C , my "improvised" panoramic head set-up. . .

This was my set-up before, but now I use the Manfrotto 454 positioning plate which I purchased last year.

Nice shot. How long did you stitched and blended the images in PS?

BTW, here's my first try for a panorama at night

Hey Mitz, awesome panoramic!. . . what software are you using?. . .

By the way, I prefer using Photoshop when doing stitched panoramic. . . I spent about 8 hrs. stitching and blending the images for my first panoramic picture. For the Lingayen Beach Panoramic, (my second one) I patiently finished it after more than 6hrs.

Thanks very much, for viewing. You can post some more of your panoramic shots in this thread.

Hi Joef! Thanks for looking. I'm using open source softwares for my panoramic and VR photogorahpy. Autopano-SIFT for control point generation, Hugin for stitching and Smartblend for blending. Its a lot faster and more flexible than doin it in PS.

Haven't tried printing any of my panoramics. Most of my pano shots are more than 120" in length. I'm planning one of my rectilinear panos with a dimension of 160"X24" at 300dpi. But i guess the price is not worth it. I think only a Durst Lambda machine can print and its very expensive. Besides, i dont have any place in my house to display it.

Do you also do VR photography?

Maybe you can reduce the dimension of your panoramic image (24" by 160") to let's say 8" by 53.33" as what i did so that it would not be very very long... Though I've not framed it yet, and I'm still figuring it out how to do the matting. . .

VR photography, no Sir. . . Still have no idea how it's being done but definitely there are softwares involved.

Sayang naman pagod ko pagshoot and pagstitch if i reduce the size. A lot of the details would be lost also. If i want to print that small then i would just shoot a single row and with less images. Faster to shot and easier for my hardware and sofware.

Kung sabagay tama ka Sir, sayang nga naman. But, as you have said that printing your panos is not worth it, considering the price, so I humbly suggested to reduce the dimensions so that printing them would be more practicable. Iba rin kasi na meron kang mga hard copies of your beautiful panos. Kasi pag sa monitor mo lang tinitingnan, as you are panning your image to the other side, nawawala na sa display yong kabilang side. You can't have a good view really of your whole masterpiece. Parang sayang din di ba?. . . Anyway, it's just my suggestion.

Yes will do, and just call me Les :) I prefer to do it on a Friday so I can be back in Manila by Sunday. Since it only takes around 4 hours to get there, my plan is to leave Manila after work on a Thursday night so we can catch the sunrise on Friday. Then we can hit the Hundred Islands since it only takes some 45 minutes to get there, right?

BTW, visited the museum in front of the Capitol and love those world war II pictures of that same beach where the Japanese landed. My dad always tells us all those scary stories where they used to hide to take cover from all the bombing there.

Show me your panoramic tools too. Oh, and for panorama software, check out Autopano Pro (http://www.autopano.net/) There's a sample image created here
